Coast slayer red is my favorite. It goes high, medium, low. Instead of a laser it’s a red light that goes low to high. Out of everything I’ve done in my life, I’ve never needed a laser and the red light is much more useful. I’m a contractor and project manager. Work in the woods on the mountain and that’s where I’m at for my hobbies as well.

I really like my little Acebeam. It’s been through the wash in my pocket, and works well on the bill of my cap. Good output, and is usually less than $20 on Amazon.
I have the Nitecore MT2A PRO and if ONLY it had a moonlight mode it would be my favourite torch. But instead it's lowest level is FEROCIOUSLY bright if all you want is to see the way to the bathroom at 3 a.m. And it only goes UP from there. On High it lights up the football field I walk the dogs on from goal to goal. Crazy bright for a "penlight" Too bright for inside really. Great for walking the dogs (😂and signalling ships over the horizon!)
Yeah, you hit my thoughts on the head. The original arkfeld felt heavy to me and the arkfeld pro feels even heavier. I really dont enjoy carrying either honestly. I tend to stay on the 14500 side of things. Matter of fact I'd say 90% of my lights are 14500/AA sized. Just seems to be a sweet spot there. Size and brightness ~500-1000 lumens. And lets be honest, you really dont need more than that for EDC. If you packing more its just for fun or wow factor or you have a more specialized use case (hiking light, work light, etc). Nothing wrong with that. But with tech the way it is now to be readily equipped for basic everyday tasks a guys pockets are getting loaded down and so I value a lighter piece of gear as long as it can fulfill my needs.
Some of us like more than 2-4 hours of battery life on a usable setting, which is what you're getting with most 14500 lights, especially if you go high CRI. The vast majority of the lights I own are dual-fuel 14500 lights, but I need more for EDC. I don't wanna be charging my light every 2-3 days.
Cool and as i said there is nothing wrong with that. But I doubt I use 4 hours of light in a week time or maybe even 2 just regularly and if I use more its just a simple swap out. It isn't like I got only 1 light so yeah. To each their own but i feel like for the greater percentage of people that is enough which is what I was getting at.
Ever since I got my Sofirn SC31T, I've told myself, "No, I don't need any more flashlights, I have what I need..." But every time you release another flashlight video my wallet dives for cover 😅
Great video! I first came upon your channel watching a whole bunch of stuff about multi tools and whatnot and subscribed, but it's cool to see some flashlight content as well. Some new pieces on my radar!
You can loosen the tail cap slightly on the Sofirn to prevent accidental turn on in pocket. Works on all lights with electronic switches with anodized tube ends.
My current favorite is a NEBO Slim that clips on to my shirt or hat. I have an older one that’s a slightly different design than the ones they make now, but it is great. Has lasted a couple years and recharges fast.
Sofirn could be a top tier manufacturer if they would just get their switches and clips ironed out. I have an SC13 and they completely missed the boat on the switch, it is proud of the body as you noted, it is easy to fire accidentally, you have to have Parkinsons to lock/unlock it, and perhaps worst of all the charge port is diametrically opposed to the switch and they feel the same so you have to look at it or rotate the light to switch after pressing the charge port cover. I love Sofirn and have several, I'm going to keep buying them knowing that one of these days they'll get it right.
Sofirn is sought for their affordability. It's sister brand, also from the same factory, is the mid-tiered Wurkkos. They probably manufacture for top tiered brands. Sofirn knows its niche.
Those Coast Slayer and Jetbeam ones look interesting. Been looking for a light to carry with my Swiss Champ. I will definitely find use of the UV and laser!
I would love to see your comparison of flat tactical flashlights before Black Friday, really seeking for one Another interesting one - Leatherman clones comparison!
I still to this day feel like Arkfield Pro is sooo close to be ALMOST perfect. My overblown wishlist to be added would be: -Easy removable battery so the thing doesn't turn into a paperweight in a few years (this one is dealbreaker for me) The rest: -Return of flipping/rotating/adjustable main head (which I know could create issues with cooling) -Tail switch or at least magnetic side -Bi-directional USB-C charging and maybe wireless qi charging -Side Red low energy light
Always looking for 4000k - 5000k tints, got the Acebeam H16 high CRI, amazing light! I hope I'm not spreading misinformation, but I heard Manker is working on a e02 e03 version III, I loved version e02 II with 4000k! The moonlights and the UI were perfect!
The safety factor of coming on in your pocket is just insane the last few times riding a bicycle. Or just sitting down in the couch when in front pocket, to where I swore I was on fire, or about to crash the bike. I've resorted to a belt holster rigid case for one of them. Heavy jeans fabric seems to bunch up just stiff enough of a fold, to actuate the side button. And for sure tethered to belt loop with quick disconnect. I lost one on the first day, where clip regardless who makes it when riding a bike, it will escape. Cheers
I’m so used to twist open the battery cap a little bit that it’s just in muscle memory. To prevent accidentally turning on. Even with modeIs which have lock feature. I don’t know if it’s working on every single pocket size light 🤷
I use compact lights on my hat as you mentioned at work. the number of lights on the market with a wrong direction pocket clip is maddening. since olight ruined the design of the baton I will give the sofrin a try Thanks. I prefer 18650 as I have a lot and they have great run time. but the o-light went to crazy knurling under the clip that destroys my hat in less than a month of use.
Olights do not have replaceable batteries, so you can’t just swap out exhausted batteries with a freshly charged battery in the field or at work. That makes them a no-go for me.
FYI both Olights seen in this review DO have replaceable batterries (16340 and 18650). Also, tubular flashlights more likely will have replaceable batteries than not. Examples of Olights that have built-in/non-replaceable batteries include the Arkfeld and the Oclip, both of which are rectangular in shape.
@ - True, thanks! I also have bought a dozen of their tiny AAA keychain lights (gifts) that are exceptional. But I also have a few others that don’t, which while I love them, they aren’t practical at work or camping without someway to recharge them.
Yes, people seem to either love or hate Olight’s magnetic charging cable (mcc). I happen to like thier charging system, mind you I have several olights so I have several of those cables
@ - I don’t mind the cables, I mind not being able to swap out batteries in the field or while working. If you are using a flashlight for extended periods, and you can’t take the time go back to the car or office and wait for it to recharge… it’s an issue. When I go camping, sometimes we bring chargers, but it’s just easier if you can carry spare batteries. I like Sofirin’s lights, I keep a baggie with a few extra batteries in a pocket with me if I’m searching, walking, going to be busy, whatever.
Interesting video, thanks! That MT1A needs a tactical mode with instant access to turbo aside from mode memory. Strobe would also be nice. It's brighter than the Weltool Pro Tac, but you always know what you are getting with that one. BTW, Roxon just credited me 15% ($7.50) on my Flex Companion pre-order. I ordered it from their product menu page this weekend. In chat, they say they intend to ship around Nov 10.
I EDC a bit heavy, not a loony, I just never minded full pockets so I never minimized. Any good EDC flashlight that can take the longer Powercell 21700s is my jam. The battery has a USB-C port built in and reverse charging (acebeam and nitecore and vapcell have good ones). So I have a large battery flashlight and ALWAYS have a good sized emergency powerbank on hand without needing to carry a powerbank. Only downside is they dont fit in all 21700 flashlights (even my dual-spring Sofirn SC33 cant use it) so you have to be careful. Too few EDC lights have built in reverse charging. Wurkkos TS25 is a fantastic bedside light with reverse charge and Anduril2, but no tail-switch makes it a nogo for EDC.
Anything using Nitecore's UHi LEDs are a no-go for me. The specifically said they adjusted the tint to be less green on the UHi 20 vs the UHi 40 in lights like the MH12 Pro. Surprise, they really didn't fix it and it's by far one of the worst tints from any LED I've seen. Between that and Nitecore's extremely exaggerated runtimes, I've steered away from them since I got my MH12 Pro. I still keep it as a backup thrower, but it doesn't get used much.
My titanium i5r, which is a 14500 size light, weighs about the same as my Arkfeld UV, but the Arkfeld rides in my pocket better and is hardly noticeable. And unlike a lot of the other flat design lights, the pocket clip on my Arkfeld is completely deep carry.
hi I saw your video regarding the sofirn sc13.pressing the power button 3 times will lock the power button so that you won't accidentally turn it on by pressing it 3 times it will give you a confirmation sign with it blinking twice and if you want to use it just press the power button 3 times again and it will perform its normal function again again it will blink twice confirming power button is on stand by hope this helps
Yeah, if I can’t use the 18650s and 21700s that I already own, that’s a non-starter. And yeah, the original mag lights had no problem with the sides switch coming on. They also had no charging port directly opposite to accidentally try to activate in an emergency. So after frantically groping while trying to pull it out of the holster once you found the detent you knew you were in the right place. And had at least some chance of getting light on the target before anything bad happened. So yeah, side buttons on an edc are also a no go. I already have an inconvenient light on my keychain.
It's not only the weight of these flat lights, but the length is a major problem for me. I am constantly looking for an EDC version, but none of these (coast, nitecore, arkfeld) are sized for comfortable EDC carry. So far, the trustfire x3 mini is the only one that works. I hope these other companies make one soon
The big swing and miss from Coast on that Slayer was not making that pocket clip changeable. It looks like it would be awkward for left handed carry. Most flashlight guys I know carry their lights on the left side so their right hand is free for work or whatever. Non flashlight people aren’t going to spend $80 on a light.
I never thought I would watch a video on flashlights as it's one of my pet hates and I used to find it weird but this video is so well done and informative I actually really enjoyed it. Well done. impressive
