I love the idea of a separate apartment in the detached building. Keep the rafters and windows, though. You may need a ladder or something to clean them, though. Keep the same style of siding in a medium brown hue. Have both buildings the same color. One could be horizontal, and the other could be vertical if you want them to be different. I agree with Irene. But I wouldn’t put a bathtub in the mother in law suite. Only a shower so that as she ages she can still be safe while taking a shower, or she could have room for someone to help her with bathing. Maybe for the outside of the house a mixture of wood and stone. And both buildings should match.
