Crusader Song (Old Norse) - Jórsalanám

- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- Here's a song I wrote and sang in Old Norse detailing the events of the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099 from the perspective of a Scandinavian crusader (people from all over Europe responded to the call of Pope Urban II, with varying degrees of success). The Crusaders won the siege and instituted the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
The name, Jórsalanám, literally means "The Taking of Jerusalem".
The epic picture is called "Kingdom of Heaven" by Sergey Sezonov, which he very kindly allowed me to use for this video.

Beautiful song, I stumbled across this it by reading about the Normans and found it by coincidence and boy I don't regret it one bit. We lost our ways, we're still standing after decades of strife within the country, one of the last christian strongholds in the Middle East.

You know, I don't really know a whole lot about the non-Roman rites of Catholicism. What are the main differences in how Maronites practice their faith? (Sorry if it's weird or personal, I'm genuinely curious. American Catholic schools don't cover anything about it.)
@@emilyrattini8462Hi, I am an American Maronite. There is no difference in our beliefs and theology. The biggest differences are in tradition and linguistics, where Aramaic is used commonly in mass. Arabic as well, and depending on where your from, the local language (english for me). Married men are also permitted to become priests, given that they were married before they joined the priesthood. I suppose some other differences are in the dress of our clergy, the cardinals of the Eastern Rites are dressed in black and look Orthodox. We have our own patriarch, but we are of course apart of the universal Roman church and recognize the supremacy of the Pope and his decrees. This is all really simplified, but let me know if you have anything specific you want to inquire about

Greetings, my brothers In Christ who bended knee to him before my kin did! Christ bless you!
I was raised agnostic, so I never really thought about how badass the Crusades were. It gathered men from all over Europe, united under God. Totally foreign customs and languages, yet they fought together. Can you imagine the camaraderie? A bunch of guys from a thousand miles away show up at your doorstep. You've got a hard time exchanging words at the beginning, and there are a lot of details lost in translation. Yet you continue on with them, and you form a brotherhood with those around you. So, so different, but so alike in cause. Eventually, you lay siege to Jerusalem. And at that point, you have no doubt that the men you are with would die for you, and you for them. That might've been a little fanciful and uninformed, but I do hope I get my point across regardless. I've got a lot of reading to do. Thanks for putting your music out there. I'm really enjoying the immersion it offers and the hours of reading it inspires. Take care, man.
Most people these days are taught to believe the Crusaders just randomly went and committed a holocaust against Muslim people in The Middel East with no provocation and completely out of no where because they just got a sudden blood lust caused by being Christians.
Greeks, Latins, Germans, Armenians, and everyone in between fought in the crusades

When I'm 18, I promise I show this song to her 🖤
It's four years after the pope's call
We all pledged our will to join
We have taken the cross
We ride now to Jerusalem
Anatolia and Syria are doused in Christian blood
Antioch is now in the hand of Christ
We fare past Acre and Bethlehem
Jerusalem awaits our spears!
The city rises up from the horizon
Crusaders, we march onward!
Surround the walls
Blockade the city gates!
Raymond and the Franks occupy
Mount Zion And Saint Stephen's gate
Godfrey charges the gate of flowers
Tancred marches toward Jerusalem.
Now we do battle against the Saracen!
The fallen fallen lie atop the hot sand
It matters not whether we return
We fight for the triumph of the cross.
Many believed all hope was lost;
The land was barren and provided no food
In heavy armor at the height of summer
The desert brings death.
Iftikar, the governor of Jerusalem, calls
For the Egyptian army and ships
Thousands of men march in the south
Men of faint heart began to flee.
Bishop Adhemar appeared to Peter the priest in a dream
He bade the warrior embark on a pilgrimage
Up the Mount of Olives
Barefoot, we all went.
Cruel exchanges gave way to prayers
The Christians reconciled with one another
We then felt a zealous strength from heaven
Onward, men of Christ, to the field of heaven!
From the sea, to our aid,
A host of English warriors has come
Along with men of Genoa
They bring stone and wood.
Three days of fierce battle ensued
From mount Zion and upon the northern wall
A missile shower fell day and night, and our catapults
Broke down their defenses.
Then Godfrey and the Lothringians sprang
Over the bridge of the gate of flowers
In a stream of swords, they seized the keep
And drove the Saracens from the city.
Godfrey was chosen to be king, but
He wouldn't claim Jesus' crown,
He was thus named defender
of the Holy Sepulcher.
Now to defend the city from the Egyptians
The Vizier Al-Afdal himself is marching
Godfrey now marches to war
With Robert of Flanders
Ten thousand Crusaders
Brandished, early in the morning,
Their swords on the fields of Ascalon
The enemy saw poorly in the dark.
Then, the men of Christ charged them
With bows and swords under the sign of the cross
The Saracens were panic stricken
And driven out of the land.
We have fulfilled our sacred oath
The bells chime once again
Atop the holy sepulcher of our Good Lord
All glory be to God.
(It's so rare that there's a song this good, it sounds good, but it's also so edifying, and has a good bit of history in it too, excellent work!!)

Lovely song man
Hello! Me again. First of all, gotta say I LOOOOVE your work, and I never miss your songs. Sorry I have a ton of questions, but I'm studying Old Norse (your songs are helping a lot, especially with vocabulary, btw) and I'm wondering why you used "kváðumsk allir fylgja vilja". Is the verb mediopassive? Reflexive, like "we said to ourselves", or "to each other"? The -sk ending is still something quite elusive to me, lol.
I'd appreciate a lot if you could help me with this thing that's killing me, lol.
Hey there, thanks! With verbs of speech, you often see this device in Old Norse as well as Modern Icelandic by which the mediopassive form is used in what I would call a "semi-reflexive" way, which essentially shortens the phrase and renders a following subordinate clause unnecessary. So instead of: "Kváðum allir þat, at vér vildum fylgja" (We all said that we wanted to follow), the medio-passive form is used: "Kváðumsk allir vilja fylgja" (We all said "of ourselves" to want to follow). The position of fylgja and vilja are switched in the song as a poetic device which is attested frequently in Old Norse. Hope that helps.
@@SkaldBard that really helped. Thanks a lot! I appreciate you take the time to read the comments and reply to your followers. Total respect. Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed! Little curious where you heard that ⟨v⟩ was pronounced [β] and not [w] - the evidence I've seen strongly suggests that the transition to [v] occurred in the later medieval period (1300s onwards)
@@SkaldBard That's really interesting! I haven't heard that before, do correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Jackson Crawford said it's pronounced [β]
@@dingus9537 Ah, fair enough - we know pretty much for certain that it was [w] in the Proto-Norse and early-middle Old Norse period and that it did gradually move to [v] in line with orthographic changes (from "qu" to "kv" for example), so the jury still seems to be somewhat out on this one. Sadly there are no medieval Scandinavians to ask to be 100% sure so I'm going to roll with my [w] ;-)

Though I may disagree with, and at sometimes, despise, Christianity, I personally believe that the crusaders were entirely right in the political situation. These crusaders were defending the rights of pilgrims who wanted to go to Jerusalem. They may have been brutal, but they were about as brutal as any nation would be during the medieval era. I remember hearing a story about how a crusader king literally transported ice to Saladin.
Though you may despise Christianity, Christ still loves you and died for you.

Jórsalanám live please
LarPagans and Puslims are still coping at the comments 😂😂😂
I really like this song but one thing that bugs me is the lyrics sound more like a history lesson on the First Crusade rather than an authentic crusader describing the battle or his thoughts going into battle. The narrator is practically omniscient, knowing the dreams of a bishop and the names of Frankish leader while being able to distinguish them from the Genoese, Lotharingians, and the English. I don't know Old Norse, but the English lyrics often switch back and forth between the past and present tense, sweeping broadly between several days and weeks of events. The song sounds great, but as I read the translation to the lyrics, my satisfaction dwindles. I'm glad others can enjoy it even more than me.
If you read historic Norse texts, that's how they are. "Saga" means both "tale" and "history" for that reason as historically, there isn't a distinction between telling a story and detailing the history of something. As the oral tradition developed before writing, this is how knowledge was transmitted -- and much of it wasn't particularly "poetic". If you read some of the sagas, you'll see just what I mean about their storytelling.
Also, one of the unique features of Old Norse is the frequency with which writers skipped between tenses, even in the same sentence. It was a literary device that they appeared to use almost randomly. So, this song is a product of that, and not trying to be anything that it isn't. Its fundamental objective is to tell the (not very known) story of the Siege of Jerusalem in a few short minutes

Thanks for your comment. The medieval worldview was fundamentally different to ours, with death and either salvation or damnation lurking around the corner almost constantly, so I think it is important to bear that in mind when we think back to these times and the events that transpired. Atrocities, as sad as it is, were and have been committed by armies throughout history; but the evidence suggests that the average crusader genuinely did want to rally behind their cause and possibly pay the ultimate sacrifice for what they thought was right. The news of the victory was met with elation throughout Europe, so it's that spirit I am aiming to capture. I'm glad you enjoyed the song!
