Awesome demo of an awesome pedal! Great playing Stefan! I think you've performed the best demo of Dweller (with apologies to OBNE's "Dan Explains it all", a close second). Dweller gets my vote for pedal of the year. OBNE's amazing vision (probably first conceptualized as "a crazy idea") and their ability to execute and actually build Dweller is incredible; it's soooooo versatile! I'm already 3 pedals into OBNE, Dweller, Flat Light and Procession, with Dark Star Mondegreen on it's way (thanks in part to your demo with Brady). Thanks again to OBNE and Stefan!
Dude! Thank you so much. Dan will always be number one in my book, but I'm truly honored that you think my demo is up there with him and the rest of the Old Blood Noise gang. This pedal is just so amazing. I'm just stoked that it sounds unlike anything else out there. It's just so unique. On top of that, all of the sounds in there are highly musical and usable, which just makes the pedal even sweeter. So yes, definite pedal of the year contender, and I'm happy to hear you're as hyped about it as I am ❤
This may be my first OBNE purchase. I've always wanted a Black Fountain, but I already have a Belle Epoch Deluxe and a ARP-87. The ambient tones out of thing sound amazing and the fact that you can dial in a classic sounding phaser on its own is an extra benefit. Very unit pedal.
Same. I heard a couple of demos and didn't really feel it would be up my alley. But Stefan's way of using it opened it up massively. I'll be keeping my eye out for one down the line.
I don't know that this even needs to be in a pedal chain. You've got unique modulation, phase, and reverb all in one. I wouldn't even know where to put this in a pedalboard lineup (end of mods and b/f delays/reverbs like where I typically put tremolo?!)
That’s what makes it fun. You can place it wherever you want. Explore and find out your personal preference. I usually think of it as a delay though, and have it before reverb but after modulation and drive. But nothing’s carved in stone, my friend 😊👍
Joel Mitchell I think it work well like that, just imagining it stretching and doing its thing to other mods and OD, Fuzz. But, if you want to get freaky, use a Trem or a Uni-Vibe to further modulate the Dweller. It might be garbled, but that's what is fun.
OKAY, THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! For the first time we can see that it's actually more than an overpriced noise making toy, actually a musical instrument for grown-ups. Thank you.
My pleasure, man! I’m not a particularly good synth player, but I still enjoy playing them immensely. And using them with the right pedals can really take them to incredible sonic places 😊
Wow the Dweller sounds amazing! and it's such a beautifully voiced machine/instrument. I thought I was done with delays, maybe not so....and yes for sure it's like 3 or 4 pedals in One! Nice playing as always.
Really happy to hear you liked it. It truly is a unique machine, and so much more than "just a delay" :) . One of the most unique pedals I've ever played. Inspiration just flows out of it non-stop☺
I agree totally, I think this is the most amazing delay to date!!! BTW, are you going to Winter NAMM 2019? It would be fun to run into you there. Thanks again for what you do, it's awesome
I need more TPZ+OBNE in my life. My favorite pedal reviewer demoing my favorite pedal company?! It's just like your pickguard: Gold (with a protective oxide layer).
Hahahaha! Love that analogy 😂 Happy you're enjoying the OBNE demos. Means a lot to me. Just love that brand so much. Some of the best dudes in the biz 😍
It’s great. It’s amazing. Only downside is, as with so many plinky plonky knob tweaker pedals - no presets. With so many options, it’s almost impossible to recall your favorites. I recently watched this channel’s review of the OBNE BL-52 Phase Repeater. Still no presets, but it seems like a much simpler device with similar effects.
Your channel and the channel A Bunch of Pedals are the two best guitar pedal channels. No heavy metal. A bunch of Pedals doesn’t talk at all and your talking is minimal, but I adore hearing you describe the pedals. And the music on both yours and the other are a dream. I want albums full of the music and a lottery winning to buy all these pedals, for now though I live vicariously through RUclips!
Hi Stefan! I so much love your style of playing! Could you be so kind and recommend some tracks/bands playing in similar style and tones? Thank you in advance
Thank you very much, man! That's very kind of you. Bands that have influenced me and the way I play the most are probably Mogwai, Hammock, Caspian, Explosions In The Sky, Lowercase Noises, Slowdive, Cult of Luna and LOW. That should give you a solid starting point into a world of awesome atmospheres 🚀👽📡
Sorry I couldn’t show you that sound sooner, but there’s a lot to cover in this thing. Happy you stuck around for the magical moment. This pedal is just incredible 💚👌
@@thepedalzoneI've learned if I don't understand a pedal on your demos, wait a bit. And I'll probably end up with a new dent in my wallet. Appreciate all the work you put in!
Love your videos! As I'm currently looking to upgrade my rig and already have the J Mascis, I'm wondering what version of the deluxe reverb you're using? Cause your clean tone sounds amazing!
Starting at 1:26 really dig that, can the new BL-52 achieve that too or it more of a Dweller thing? And it goes without saying your passion and playing is inspiring.
Another awesome video, Stefan. Just picked up a Dweller--can't wait to explore some new sounds! QQ: I'm sure you've had to answer 100 times, but what is that specific Deluxe Reverb model? I see that it's a '65 reissue, but that paisley cabinet must be something special (gorgeous btw). Thanks again for the video, keep 'em coming!
Happy you enjoyed it, man. You're in for a treat with the Dweller. So many sounds in that thing 👍 The amp I'm playing is simply a limited edition of the FDR 65 RI. Just comes with a brown western tolex instead of the standard tolex. Beautiful sounding amp. By far the best clean tone I've ever had ☺
how do you connect your phone/smart device to the pedal chain? can you just use these with a mini jack - instrument cable converter or is there another thing required to interface between? I want to use those cool Brian Eno apps with my pedals too
Coming from the eurorack world have to say that your channel is wonderful and I'm sure it will grow exponentially pretty soon. I am just doing research to incorporate a couple pedals for effects and this one is exciting. What other pedal would you recommend as a good complement for the Dweller?
Thanks, man! That's very kind of you. Well, I personally like to pair the Dweller with even more expansive ambience like the Old Blood Noise Procession or Old Blood Noise Dark Star for instance. Any specific effect types you're looking for though?
@@thepedalzone For now I'm looking at phaser, reverb and delay type pedals. I'm trying to get two that will work well together but that are pretty unique when used individually if that makes any sense. The pedal world can be overwhelming when you have zero experience :( I do like Old Blood Noise, EarthQuaker and Caroline GC a lot. Thanks for the reply man!
I would probably go OBNE Dweller and OBNE Procession then. You get a lot of sound from those individually, but they open up whole new expansive soundscapes when paired together.
@@thepedalzone Well my friend, have not gotten my hands on a Dweller yet. I tried the Procession and sold it back because it felt too predictable to me. Now, I got a Fernweh from JPTR FX and I'm in love with the thing! I don't know if you've tried any of his pedals but I think you should. I also got my hands on a Transmisser and I've been traveling through space ever since. They go so well together. Thanks for always taking the time to answer comments and questions. Merry Christmas!
Guess that very much depends on what kind of band you're playing in. I can easily imagine Dweller in all of the bands I have played in and will play in, in the future. And nothing wrong with a pedal being used at home. That's where a lot of the songwriting takes place, which then becomes full songs in the end either through a full band or through a full solo studio production. Happy you enjoyed the sounds in Dweller. It's a really unique and inspiring device.
No, you can't get a chorus out of it. You can get Phaser, Vibraphase, Delay, Ambience and a lot more, but no Chorus, since that would require pitch modulation. I personally prefer to use it as a smeary multi-tap delay that ends up sounding like a unique reverb. It definitely excels at the weirder stuff. I wouldn't buy this pedal if you just want conventional effects. I don't see any boundaries on what style of music it's suited for.
Try both. Dweller is a crazy hybrid that will flourish no matter where you place it in the chain. I do tend to see my use of it as an ambient texture tool. Hence I have it fairly late in the chain.
I’ve got a Shallow Water, an Alexander Quadrant, and an EQD Grand Orbiter doing some fun modulation/delay stuff. My question, is whether you think this Dweller would add enough to make sense at this point to buy and have along side these other pedals?
Does yours has a hissing noise (white noise) when you turn it on? I use an Iso-Brick with good cable and I still have a huge noise. I isolated it and it’s still there....any idea what it could be?
Is it fair to say that the Dweller is more versatile, and a bit weirder sounding than the Visitor pedal? I'm trying to decide between the two for maximum ambient/psychedelic effect.
I'd say Visitor is more versatile being that it's three different types of modulation in one effect. Dweller is just a solid phaser with some unique sound possibilities. I find phasers are capable of making stranger sounds that to my ear are still useable however I make noisy Shoegaze music so it's different for every musician.
hello !!! i have a question , do you have a music project or a band a would like to hear something !!! GREAT video old blood is an awesome pedal company , dark star is still being my favorite hehehe !!!
Sure, man. You can check out my latest one-off band project Cloud Anthems here: cloudanthems.bandcamp.com/releases And I'm happy you enjoyed the video. Dark Star is super rad, for sure. One of my personal faves as well 👍
Sure you can. Turn Stretch all the way down, if you just want to use it as a phaser. Turn Stretch up and Depth down, if you just want to use it as a Delay
You've had this pedal long enough now to play with it quite a bit. Thoughts? I don't see any being sold used anywhere, so it's so great that nobody is selling them, or nobody is even buying them used.
I can’t get this pedal to work consistently Stef? I know that’s kinda the point, but it would be nice to get a bit more control over it. I’m staring to think it’s faulty.
ThePedalZone thanks for getting back to me so quickly man. The thing that frustrates about the pedal is that it goes into those long elastic stretch sounds without me really doing all that much to the knobs. I like to use it as a delay with only minimal modulation. But it seems to get stuck in that stretchy oscillating mode and it can be difficulty to go back to an unaffected signal? I donno, that’s as good as I can do description wise?
Yes, it’s developed to be used together with the Coldplay song “Hypnotised”. Hence the app is also called Hypnotised. It’s made by Opal Limited, a generative music app company owned by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers
ThePedalZone Went to the App Store and it looks like the Opal apps for music are only compatible with iPhone and perhaps iPads. I wouldn’t own an iPhone because I prefer android but I do have an iPad so I might get this hypnotized app. So when using this app are you playing a loop that you recorded, is that how it’s designed to work, with a loop playing?
Honestly ever since I bought this pedal I have watched videos trying to put this weird little glitch fest into some context but it stumps me with all the noise and the way it distorts when stretch is altered its way strange. I even brought the size of my board to just drive this and a moog analog delay but I cannot understand this machine help......
"Coldplay:Hypnotised" made by Opal Limited. Not sure it's available anymore. You can check out "Bloom: 10 Worlds" as a neat alternative. Made by the same developers.
Sorry, what??? You can see the pedal is hooked up to it. There’s a cable in the expression input. Why would I ever want to make the pedal sound like something it isn’t and something it can’t do? That would be super weird and dishonest. The way it sounds in the video is the way mine sounds with the particular settings shown. Remember that the input source also plays into how the pedal reacts. I’m using a synth with a soft arp attack in that example. A guitar will have a stronger and sharper attack, especially if you strum it hard. I’m sorry if you don’t enjoy the sounds you’re making with it and an expression pedal. Spent some time with it. You’ll find the sweet spots.
Sorry, what?? You can see an actual synthesizer next to the pedal. And you can see my hands play said synthesizer. I’m sorry that you thought something else was going on entirely, but I don’t think I could have painted a better visual picture of what was going on. The texts in the demo even describe what’s going on. I couldn’t possibly have done more to give you the right info. Sorry the pedal isn’t for you. Sure someone else out there will love it to death 👍

Very cool! Thanks for the info!
Incredible again Stefan. You are draining my wallet though! 😉
Haha! Thanks, man. Really happy you enjoyed the sounds ❤
how do you connect your phone/smart device to the pedal chain? can you just use these with a mini jack - instrument cable converter or is there another thing required to interface between? I want to use those cool Brian Eno apps with my pedals too
What’s the generative app you’re using? Thanks for another inspiring demo!
It's called Coldplay:Hypnotised. Not sure it's available anymore though
DWELLEEEEEERRRRR!!!
DWELLEEEEEERRRR!!! 💚
I could only imagine this with the Dark Star on crush mode! Would you still place this early like a vibe or phaser?
This sounds great but it's another one of those pedals that I can't imagine would work in a band. Perhaps it's simply for the bedroom player?
Guess that very much depends on what kind of band you're playing in. I can easily imagine Dweller in all of the bands I have played in and will play in, in the future. And nothing wrong with a pedal being used at home. That's where a lot of the songwriting takes place, which then becomes full songs in the end either through a full band or through a full solo studio production. Happy you enjoyed the sounds in Dweller. It's a really unique and inspiring device.
Can you get a chorus sound from this bad boy? Also, what type of sound do you think this excels at and for what style of music?
No, you can't get a chorus out of it. You can get Phaser, Vibraphase, Delay, Ambience and a lot more, but no Chorus, since that would require pitch modulation. I personally prefer to use it as a smeary multi-tap delay that ends up sounding like a unique reverb. It definitely excels at the weirder stuff. I wouldn't buy this pedal if you just want conventional effects. I don't see any boundaries on what style of music it's suited for.
@@thepedalzone thanks for your reply. Sounds like it could be used similar to an eqd ghost echo
Million dollar question - to put this just before or immediately after my only other delay pedal? 🤔
Try both. Dweller is a crazy hybrid that will flourish no matter where you place it in the chain. I do tend to see my use of it as an ambient texture tool. Hence I have it fairly late in the chain.
Dweller or Visitor, if you could only keep one which one would you keep?
I’ve got a Shallow Water, an Alexander Quadrant, and an EQD Grand Orbiter doing some fun modulation/delay stuff. My question, is whether you think this Dweller would add enough to make sense at this point to buy and have along side these other pedals?
I think the Dweller would add new amazing textures to any setup out there. It really sounds unlike anything else out there 👍
Dwweller! Lol nice! Homie!
DWELLER!! 💚💚💚 Thanks, bud. Means a lot coming from you 🙏
Ambience man
Sold
T3TRA UK - Awesome 🙌
Does yours has a hissing noise (white noise) when you turn it on? I use an Iso-Brick with good cable and I still have a huge noise. I isolated it and it’s still there....any idea what it could be?
So I bought the dweller and it's amazing. I was wondering have you modded the j mascis jazzmaster in any way as it sounds amazing (amp included)!
Happy to hear you’re enjoying your Dweller. It really is an awesome pedal 👌 My J.Mascis is all stock. Phenomenal guitar.
I wish I had this delay. Let me know if you ever get sick of it ;)
Is it fair to say that the Dweller is more versatile, and a bit weirder sounding than the Visitor pedal? I'm trying to decide between the two for maximum ambient/psychedelic effect.
I'd say Visitor is more versatile being that it's three different types of modulation in one effect. Dweller is just a solid phaser with some unique sound possibilities. I find phasers are capable of making stranger sounds that to my ear are still useable however I make noisy Shoegaze music so it's different for every musician.
@@treesurgeon2441 Thanks. I got the Dweller months ago. Great pedal, but not the easiest to understand. The Visitor is on my list down the road.
@@bk-ew1ny I just recently got the Dweller as well and I can't get enough of it.
hello !!! i have a question , do you have a music project or a band a would like to hear something !!!
One of my personal faves as well 👍
This is caspian in a pedal I need it
Definitely not the worst thing ti out in a pedal. Love Caspian so much!
Is there a way to use it as a standalone phaser? Or delay? I love the sound, but I love the idea a bit more if it could do both.
Sure you can. Turn Stretch all the way down, if you just want to use it as a phaser. Turn Stretch up and Depth down, if you just want to use it as a Delay
@@thepedalzone Awesome!! Maybe I missed that in your demo, haha. Thanks Stefan!!
You've had this pedal long enough now to play with it quite a bit. Thoughts? I don't see any being sold used anywhere, so it's so great that nobody is selling them, or nobody is even buying them used.
My verdict still stands unchanged. One of the best pedals to be released in 2018. Completely unique and completely inspiring!
I can’t get this pedal to work consistently Stef? I know that’s kinda the point, but it would be nice to get a bit more control over it. I’m staring to think it’s faulty.
What is it that’s not working for you consistently?
ThePedalZone thanks for getting back to me so quickly man. The thing that frustrates about the pedal is that it goes into those long elastic stretch sounds without me really doing all that much to the knobs. I like to use it as a delay with only minimal modulation. But it seems to get stuck in that stretchy oscillating mode and it can be difficulty to go back to an unaffected signal? I donno, that’s as good as I can do description wise?
Is that app you use from Coldplay?
Yes, it’s developed to be used together with the Coldplay song “Hypnotised”. Hence the app is also called Hypnotised. It’s made by Opal Limited, a generative music app company owned by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers
@@thepedalzone Thanks for the reply and love the show. The app looked familiar to me because the coldplay concerts i saw.
ThePedalZone
Went to the App Store and it looks like the Opal apps for music are only compatible with iPhone and perhaps iPads. I wouldn’t own an iPhone because I prefer android but I do have an iPad so I might get this hypnotized app.
So when using this app are you playing a loop that you recorded, is that how it’s designed to work, with a loop playing?
Is this going stereo out of your looper?
No. Running an all mono signal path.
What do you expect it to do? And where do you have it in your chain?
What is the app on the phone?
"Coldplay:Hypnotised" made by Opal Limited. Not sure it's available anymore. You can check out "Bloom: 10 Worlds" as a neat alternative. Made by the same developers.
Whats that app you're using?
It's called Hypnotised. Made by Opal Limited. All the gear I use is always listed in the video description ☺👍
@@thepedalzone Cool. Great demo btw we can always count on you to take some weird shit and make it sound amazing
Making the weird sound wonderful is my favorite thing in the world 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting, man. Means a lot 🙏
Dark Star, Rever, Excess and now this. It's all your fault! :P
I'm "sorry" 😊
4:10
Neat sound ❤👍
damn, every rhythm-based pedal should have tap-tempo port… no way to sync with all the other gear. dealbreaker for me.
Mine didn’t sound like this. His expression pedal isn’t even hooked up to dweller when I use expression on it it doesn’t do that in any setting
You didn’t say in the video it was hooked to a synth to do that. I wasted 200 on that pedal for that feature and it doesn’t even work
Sorry, what?? You can see an actual synthesizer next to the pedal. And you can see my hands play said synthesizer. I’m sorry that you thought something else was going on entirely, but I don’t think I could have painted a better visual picture of what was going on. The texts in the demo even describe what’s going on. I couldn’t possibly have done more to give you the right info. Sorry the pedal isn’t for you. Sure someone else out there will love it to death 👍
“Sorry what??” Is getting old. You’re just a dishonest douche I’ll use other channels for pedals for now on. Bye
Bye 👋
