My grandpa was a holiness preacher, he called himself a teacher, because he taught the word and didn't holler and spit like some of them did lol he never allowed snakes in his church! They called each other brother and sister but never saints. My grandpa was a good man and went over and beyond to do the lords will. Visit the sick and fatherless ! Him.and my grandmother prayed a many a prayer for his children and grandchildren. I miss him everyday! He too was a moonshine before being convicted to serve the lord! Now and again he would tell us about his life of sin and how far the lord brought him. He read the Bible so much that he could quote it word for word and if you couldn't find something in the Bible he could tell you where every scripture was and where to go into the old testament and show reference. My dad's side of my family were devout Baptist, so I grew up feeling comfortable in both!

Don't like all the wild things that go on in some gatherings. I always think," How did Jesus present himself? How did the believers act? " I cannot imagine any spitting, yelling etc went on. You can make a joyful noise (singing) unto the lord . But I also do not like the ear splitting speakers inside.

"There's a counterfeit for everything God's got.." No truer words.
This is why I pray for discernment. Because this is a tricky world full of very tricky people. This is the gift I pray for everybody. I feel that if folks can learn discernment, they will find their way back to God. The lambs always come back to the fold..When they are able to see clearly. 💛 THANK YOU, TIPPER. This channel always leaves me with a palpable feeling of peace & contentedness; a cozy aftertaste of nostalgia & smiley. And, a note of Appalachian Pride. I've never felt free to feel that way until your channel.

Then she would say things like you big boys gather wood, you lil girls go collect eggs, Big girls get the big pots out we got cannin to do! Long story short the night Gran passed I woke up set bolt up in bed because Grandma yelled HEY GOMER!! Momma came in the room to wake us all up so we could all go gather round with the family. But there I sat wide awake which startled momma. And I said Grandma went to Jesus momma. she asked how'd you know? I said she hollered at me on her way out! I was 17 I'll never forget that!

This sounds exactly like listening to my grandparents talking ( they were lifelong residents of Clay county, Kentucky)especially about making moonshine and snake handlers. I saw a Holiness church in session ( from the road) as a teenager. ..I remember them being really noisy.
Mixing carbide and water makes acetylene gas. My grandparents called those noisemakers " Christmas guns". I also heard them called " fartin' dragons". Looks cool at night.
My grandparents felt you had to be " right with the spirit" to handle snakes or speak in tongues.
To my knowledge, snake handlers are still around...

Especially living from the land and being so happy with their little tree, homemade decorations, and the joy of finding their stockings filled on Christmas morning. I remember that when I was in high school speech class, one student gave a talk about moonshine and explained that one reason that "white lightning" was so dangerous was that lead salts could get into the liquor when such lead-lined items as car radiators were used during the distillation process. Somehow I doubt that the Saylors would have been tempted by such shortcuts, as they prided themselves on making a product they would feel safe to drink themselves.

    @glennacordill8028 Год назад

Tipper, I love this book and how you are sharing it with us. I can relate to all of it but the snake handling in particular. I was always aware that it was practiced in the mountains in Virginia. I have some letters that my father sent to my mother during WWII. They were dating before he went overseas and he often asked how the young people at home were and what she was doing on the weekend...such as, were the girls going to take the train down to Coburn to get their picture taken or were they staying home and meeting down at the theater for a movie and an ice cream cone. In one letter, he asked if they had gone to the snake handling church the weekend before. I asked my mom about it and she said that they did. It was a form of entertainment for them, I think, and seriously forbidden by their more 'traditional' Holiness parents.
I saw an old documentary on these churches a couple of years ago. There was a younger preacher/church leader/snake handler who was focused on quite a bit in the film. I later found out that he was the strange little boy who live on the hill across from from us when I was growing up. He was an only child, a couple of years younger than me and he never seemed to find his place with the other kids. He was timid and seemed far younger than his years, being very attached to his mom. I have memories of his mother singing and it echoing across to our place. Not hymns, as you might think, but the one same song every time, which made a big impression on me and my young ears. I can still hear her now, sixty plus years later... "I feel so fine, little boys are on my mind. Honey, won't you hug me, Honey, won't you kiss me, Honey, won't you please be mine?" It even made an impression on my baby sister, who I caught singing it, at no more than four years old. I realized as I got older that perhaps she wasn't quite right in the head, as the locals would say. Or just coping with life, however that might be. I know she was whispered about and I don't recall his father being there. And I realized that he probably had a very different childhood than most of us. And wished that I had made myself a friend to him. Well, watching this documentary showed me that he did find his place among friends of his choosing... and felt respected for his life's calling...be it in a snake handling church.
Tipper, you are making all these old memories flow. My British husband of 32 years still doesn't know what to make of it all. I had him a nervous wreck before the first family reunion that I took him to. He knew I had a lot of preachers in my family and that the meal was prayed over many times before the food made it to our mouths. I told him that he had nothing to worry about but that they might all lay hands on him at some point and pray for his speech impediment (accent). He spent the entire day on edge, just waiting for it to happen. ☺
Life has never been dull in our Appalachian mountains and I expect never will be...

I’m Catholic so we have charisms (what we call spiritual gifts like tongues and healing, etc). I don’t know how the charisms work in the other faiths but I’m sure some are legitimate. St Benedict drank ill was poisoned one time and he blessed the cup before drinking and so therefore the poison didn’t have any effect on him. There is a St Benedict medal that’s supposed to protect the person from poison. We call this a sacramental. And it’s very popular amongst Catholics to wear a St Benedict medal even if poison isn’t really a problem anymore. Anyway very interesting to learn about crisis theology. New to me and I study theology. Thanks for sharing Tipper. You have a good faith and I know you will go to heaven for sure!

On Sundays we would go to Sunday school and then walk to the bar. My grandma would make us root beer floats, we would play the games (pinball, pool and shuffle board) and the jukebox. That old church and tavern are no longer standing but they were two of my favorite places. My grandma who ran the bar is still alive at 96 years old and she’s got some crazy stories.

I finally went to church with him. The snakes were kept in boxes under the back pews. I sat through a really good service, not a snake in sight. Afterwards he lamented that he was hoping they would have brought the snakes out. I didn't tell him but that didn't bother me one bit. Fine people that practice what they believe. Their former Pastor died from snake bite. They said he lost his Faith. I reckon when I have faith enough to take up a snake I'll have room to judge for doing it. My great grandfather was a distillery inspector before 1919. Afterwards he had a string of stills in the mountains above Canton. He never got caught. My great grandmother made sure every one of her children made it to Sunday school. I'm so thankful her legacy was passed on and not his.

Really interesting section of the book Tipper. I think the comment about loyalty is very telling given where the Scots Irish came from. Loyalty was given and received within each and between the wider communities, but was not freely given to authority, due to injustices suffered in the past, whether it was against the crown or the established Anglican church, who refused to allow meeting houses to be built unless the congregation paid yearly tithes to them. I think this distrust of authority is one of the reasons why they kept movin' on, their Presbyterian belief in one true authority in God being their blueprint on how they led their lives. They were rebels long before it became fashionable. This distrust was borne out when George Washington levied taxes on whiskey to help pay for the war against Britain, only the threat of sending the continental army into the mountains to enforce it brought things to a head. The part about whiskey forming part of a family's income rings true from over here in Northern Ireland as well in the past.

None of my relatives were snake handlers. In the 60s there was a Holiness snake handling group in the community my father grew up in. It was just up from one uncles "Junkyard", which was a front for selling alcohol illegally outside of the time the legal outlets had to be closed. also there were some buildings out back which were real "dens of iniquity" , about any kind of illegal wickedness you could imagine probably happened there. My uncle outlasted the snake handlers....."The Law" never got him he was always a couple of steps ahead of them. He also benefited from jurisdictional corruption. It was weird having the two exteremes so close/My grandfather actually made moonshine and did time. We always had a jug off moonshine when I was a kid, A local constable that participated in busting up stills would bring my Father a gallon jug from the best producers. I had moonshine, honey and lemon cough syrup all the time when I was a kid. A few years ago my oldest son was remarking about how nice the AR 15 I made was... I just told him " I am of Appalachian descent, you cant stop me from making guns or liquor if I want to!

From what I read, the ability to not die from a snake bite was a gift the apostles had, but was not passed on to us. Many people today survive snake bites without anti-venin because poisonous snakes often don't inject venom when they bite creatures too big for them to eat.
I remember reading a newspaper article about a man from Kentucky who had gone down to Sand Mountain in NE Alabama to get some snakes for use in their worship. He was stopped in Tennessee. He had the snakes in cages in the back seat. I don't know how the police knew he had them. I thenk they charged him with illegally transporting wildlife or something like that.
A man I knew from Birmingham who had been a college professor who didn't have a good opinion of the folks who lived on Sand Mountain. He told me the people used both hands to shovel food into their mouths when they ate. Sounded far fetched to me! I don't know what caused him to come up with that generalized opinion. I suspect there are lots of good people on Sand Mountain, and probably a few bad, just as there are anywhere. I never got to spend any time there, just passed through on the highway. It is a pretty area.
    Happy New Year!!!

I grew up in Assembly of God churches. I've seen both my parents and my sister speak in tongues. I've also seen someone else in the congregation speak in tongues, and then my mother interpret it in normal English. I have never done any of those things, but my wife can also speak in tongues, but she won't really talk about it with me even after 23 years of marriage. I've also seen numerous people "slain in the spirit" and just drop. Never me. I feel like an outsider sometimes, but something is going on. Maybe? I guess everyone has their limits though---I've NEVER seen a snake in church. Big no-no. Just asking for it.

Signs....i was living in White GA when my daddy died
I called everyday or so and the last time I talked with him was Saturday and he said you didn't come and I wont see you ever again. I was heartsick and bless his heart he was right. I was at work and I knew I hadn't heard from anybody and couldn't get them on the phone so I called my sister's work and they told me daddy was not doing well and they wanted everybody there. My heart was so heavy and I took off from work and went home to get everything ready for us to go. It took me what seemed an eternity and we never left until about 7:00 p.m. Anyways daddy had joked around that he was going to glory in a spaceship like that cult in California...and low and behold just before we got to Macon a bright light rose up in the sky. My son was driving me in our conversion van and I reached over and grabbed his arm and said do you see that light and he said oh! momma what is that where did it come from and I said my Daddy has died. At the same time my sister was calling me to tell me that he was gone and that daddy had been looking for me all afternoon. I told her about the light and that i knew he was looking to see me coming...the light disappeared as we hung up.
He had been so sick and many weekends I went by myself that 400 miles and I would go straight to see him at the hospital. He'd be sitting up waiting on me and he would always say I can't close my eyes till you get here I would try and make him comfortable then go to Mommas to spend the night.

Very interesting. A church way out in the country near where my grandmother lived was said to handle snakes and to speak in tongues. We thought that they danced in the aisles and whooped and hollered, too. We called them holy rollers! There was so sign to tell what kind of church it was. We always asked Daddy to go that way home just in case we could see or hear something. We were excited and scared to drive by and imagine what was going on inside. One time we saw some wooden boxes and figured they were for the snakes, and we squealed and talked about them for many minutes. Thanks for the fun memory!

I saw it once when I was small and it scared the pee outta me. I peed right there and we had to leave. We never went to another one.

Love your channel! My family heritage is from the Appalachian mountains! My mother made apple stack cakes as well, so good! My Papaw was a pastor and he planted a few churches in the hollers of KY. He spoke quite about snake handling churches, which his churches were not, but he said how they would also “shout” around “hot belly stoves and not be harmed” My husband & I pastor in rural East TN and we hear of those churches near us, still believing this way. We’ve been ask some, “is your church, one of those?!” They're surprised to hear we’re not but we do know a lot of stories! I admire the strengths and strong convictions of the “holiness way of life”! My mother never wore pants, but she wasn’t critical of others, it was just her holiness faith. I SO enjoyed hearing these stories you share! You do a beautiful job reading and I thank you for preserving “the old ways”! Your channel is a real blessing!

Very good story ...I love how she went out and chopped a small tree for the house , and they decorated with paper and whatever they have , she thought about her family to bring them happiness 😊. The part of the story I didnt like is the snake stories, I was raised a Catholic. Baptist a catholic and never had snakes in my church . I heard about this and I say to each it's own . However. Love the story , and when you read to us it comes alive. Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family and Granny too.hugspatsy

I have been around moonshine all my life well not so much now, but when my uncle Clarine was still alive, he would get me a jar of good Kentucky Sipin whiskey when I had to go home. I used it for a hot drink when my family got sick, with my daddy's fresh honey and some lemon and other herbs. My cousin Jeff was a ceiling poker in the mines, his job was to go in before anyone and check the overhead of a newly blasted mine. He went in one morning and next thing you know there was a loud rumble and a crash, no body herd even a scream come out of that mine because the whole roof of that mine flattened him, thank God Jeff never knew what hit him. He was my cousin and my best friend I always wondered'" why Jeff"? If you go to Clinchco V.A. Out in front of the post office you will see a monument of miners who have died his name is there, Jeffery Lyle. as far as the snake handling goes some boys would go and catch rattlers, copperheads, cottonmouths and sell them to those Churches for good money. I can catch a snake before you can see me move. But I am not stupid enough to challenge God I figure he gave me the brains to know they can kill you; I should be smart enough to leave them alone.
