What an appalling woman - and the people who allowed themselves to be bought off allowed her to go her length. Of course she tried to buy respect with charitable donations - while being very cheap in other ways like compensating her victim! One of the standard ethical issues charities sometimes face is whether they should consider the good that they can do with the money more important than the donor's reputation. I always thought it was fine to accept donations for a good cause from anyone without acting as judge and jury on the donor, but in her case, I might have second thoughts. Thanks for another great story.

Doris Duke always fascinated me. A very interesting woman. My late mother met Doris Duke through her paintings, as mum was an art historian and insurer. Mum said there seemed to be an air of sadness around Doris and she spoke to mum about her child that died as a baby, and felt she never got over it.
I will be leaving a review on the third volume in the “They Got Away with Murder” on Amazon soon! I enjoyed it so much, as I have ALL of Mark John Maguire’s books sold on Amazon! Please consider these books as gifts, too! I have made “Readers Gift Baskets” for many friends who love reading, and also the “true crime” genre. I include bookmarks, reading lights, soft blankets throws, coffee and tea, snacks, and mugs, and sometimes I draw little crime scene “getaway” maps. (I have zero artistic ability, so these always give our friends a laugh!) I have relatives from Rhode Island, and from childhood, I remember them talking about Doris Duke “running over that poor man” and saying “Of course she was drunk! She was noticed drunk nearly every place she went!” And they said things implying that it was no wonder people took her money rather than have their jobs and pensions lost, and left unable to work because she could ruin their lives with a word to her powerful friends. The man would still be dead, so why be ruined by telling the truth? This woman had already seriously stabbed one man. With her alcohol problem, the escalation to murder doesn’t seem that unpredictable!
Thank you very much indeed, Polly - I am delighted you will leave a review for me, and so pleased that you have all my books! It is a strange thing, but I always feel I have made a connection with someone when I know I am sitting on their bookshelf!! It is very interesting what you have heard from people in Rhode Island. I think your assessment here is exactly right - I would not rule out that the police chief Joseph Radice had accepted money from her, but I actually think in such cases people are too afraid for their jobs etc to dare to go after a person of such power and influence.
I've always enjoyed your illustrations. That one where poor Eduardo is standing at the gates and seeing the station wagon come at him is especially striking. You certainly showed us Doris Duke's malice. I see rage and hatred in her reflected eyes.
The fact is, she didn't need anything or anyone, she didn't even have to better herself with a skill or a job, resulting in a meaningless life. Pitiful.
Brilliant! Ok, here are 2 alternate views that go against the grain! Firstly, really Eduardo was sponging off her. It seems unlikely that he actually liked or respected her, yet he accepted accommodation in all 5 of her mansions and a salary of half a million. You could look at it that he used her until something better came along, then dumped her. Of course this is no justification for murder. But perhaps a warning to leeches who decide to suck up to people for their wealth and position? Again, no justification for murder, though. In addition, if we believe the quote from her using the term "two-timing" (which suggests the exclusivity of an intimate relationshiip), then it may be that she at least, thought their relationship was more than employer/employee, more than friends and in fact lovers. No excuse for murder, though. Secondly, all morality and justice aside, if Doris Duke had been charged, brought to court, convicted and sent to the chair, it would have cost society millions - especially with her fleet of top lawyers - in fact it may have been impossible to bring her to justice, given her great wealth, the legal expertise she could afford, and the corruption of those involved in bringing the charges. Look at OJ. A big waste of taxpayers money. If Doris goes free - and society benefits from her donations of millions to good causes... which is better for society/taxpayers? Particularly as the special circumstances mean that she is very unlikely to be a danger to the public in future? No justification for her getting away with murder, though. Or is it? I'm sure these were the arguments that floated around the police/crown prosecution service etc at the time. Thanks as ever for all your hard work and great presentation/narration etc. xx Mel
Many thanks for your thoughtful comment, Mel! Yes, it's true to an extent and the money question and feasibility of bringing a successful prosecution must always be weighed by any prosecuting authority - but I would argue that in certain cases, especially one of such seriousness, it was of great importance to bring a prosecution, if only to demonstrate that the law gives no regard to wealth or any other distinction. On the matter of the intimacy of their relationship, it is possible - but I could find no trace of interest on Eduardo's part, in women... And Doris Duke - who had her employees trailed and investigated - would have known that he was gay. She had also employed Eduardo's lover Edmund Kara for a time, too. I could not find any suggestion that he was anything other than a valued confidante. I did not find Peter Byrne's claim that she told him "No-one two times me" convincing! He waited until he was 90 before telling anyone that!
Brilliant job, Mark. You are in top form as essayist and narrator. The best on RUclips. I always focus on tawdry financial aspects. She would have been robustly insured. Crushing people with cars is down the middle of their fairway. That's what they do. Unlike some professional liability policies, the policyholder need not give consent to settle. Underwriters wouldn't have vindictively fought Eduardo's family. Clear liability. Combined ratio includes defense costs. Even eschatolgically evil State Farm would settle such a case. Did she decline insurance coverage? That would be more haughty and scandalous than the actual murder. Insightful and entertaining as always, excuse the one quibble..
Thank you very much, Robert - and for the enlightening information concerning insurance... I will try to pick this up when I get to write this up for the book in which I cover this. I have not appreciated this, but it makes sense - and I do not know the answer. I had understood that she refused to settle on the advice of her attorney who told her it would render her liable to arrest for admitting guilt. I did not accept that explanation, but thought it due to Doris's determination to see the whole tribe of Tirella's off! The insurance angle might reinforce or deplete that assumption...
Mr. Mark, I have actually been checking your channel all week looking for a new upload. Your message to my comment on the last video was great. I found the video you referenced and watched. Hilarious and spot on!! Will watch this one tonght and will give my thoughts in a post script. PS: excellent investigation into this one. I do believe you're very close to the truth. I believe I told you that I spent 30yrs as a Firefighter/ EMS Medical First Responder and 16 yrs as a Insurance Special Investigator in Fire and Fraud losses for Insurance companies here in America. So, I've worked with numerous Crash Reconstruction experts over the years. They were just coming into use back when this incident occurred, but usually only at state police/highway patrol levels. Unfortunately, money talks and bull$#!+ walks, as the old saying goes. Humanities degradation of honesty and integrity continues daily worldwide!! Id be willing to subscribe to a monthly membership. I'm sure many of your fans would. Think about it, anyways.
Thank you very much, Michael - yes, I thought you might like the "Entirely a matter for you" video of Peter Cook! After mentioning it to you I went back and watched it again - some of the references in it went over my head, they must have been a thing of their time, but the reference to "Norma Scott" was a plain reference to Norman Scott, the man whom the Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe wanted killed. It is a superb parody of how a British judge can sway a jury if so inclined. I have noticed in the US judges do not seem to indulge themselves in 6 hour long addresses to the jury, which we have developed a nasty habit of in Britain - certainly in days gone by. Thanks also for your comment on the DD case and your concurrence in the matter. I think ultimately people were too afraid to take her on. On the membership thing - to be honest, I don't understand it! I wouldn't want to deprive anyone of access to my videos and am not sure I have much else to offer them in membership... Anyway, many thanks again and all good wishes to you!

@@SMichaelDeHart Thank you very much indeed, Michael - you are much appreciated! I haven't been to the States for a few years now - it would definitely be for leisure purposes, though, not for a book tour...
This time, the events provided a more simple "plot" to the story. The fact that this episode is just as interesting and intriguing as always, even without the "added suspense" of other possible suspects, many preceding events etc., is proof of your masterful storytelling & insights into the people's psyche. Thank you, you're very kind! It was quite straightforward, as you say - simply a question of whether it was accidental or deliberate. Such a treat and very interesting! Subscribed!!
So beautifully and interestingly narrated as usual . No wonder this is one of my favourite channels .
I'm glad you think so - thank you!
Excellent as ALWAYS 😊
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you, Jill!
Great way to spend a wet, miserable afternoon listening to one of your investigations. Thank you!
Oh the autumn is here, I think!
Thank you very much Mr Maguire for another wonderful episode! :)
What you do is very much appreciated by everyone who follows your channel and the enigmatic way you are able to engage with the listener is phenomenal!
Top man!
Thank you
So nice of you to say so - thank you!
I enjoy your way of describing events as though you were there. Thank you!
Doris Duke always fascinated me. A very interesting woman. My late mother met Doris Duke through her paintings, as mum was an art historian and insurer. Mum said there seemed to be an air of sadness around Doris and she spoke to mum about her child that died as a baby, and felt she never got over it.
Enjoyed that so much I'll have to read more about her ..thank you mark .
I'm glad - thank you, Barbara!
Fabulpus. So glad to have found your story again. They ate the best...your voice and the whole content is terrific...thankyou...
Thank you - I'm so glad you liked it!
(I have zero artistic ability, so these always give our friends a laugh!)
I have relatives from Rhode Island, and from childhood, I remember them talking about Doris Duke “running over that poor man” and saying “Of course she was drunk!
What a great story, and beautifully narrated. I love his voice! Thank you very much for reading this and uploading it.
Thank you for these well researched videos, they really brighten my day every time I see a new one up!
I'm glad - thank you!
Wonderful insight and analysis of personalities. Thank you😊
I'm glad you thought so, Catherine - thank you!
I've always enjoyed your illustrations. That one where poor Eduardo is standing at the gates and seeing the station wagon come at him is especially striking. You certainly showed us Doris Duke's malice. I see rage and hatred in her reflected eyes.
Thank you verymuch!
I'm enjoying volume 3 very much. 🙂
Thank you, Ruth - that is so good to know! :)
Thank you for another great tale !! I enjoy every single one you so generously give to us. Wonderful job 😏
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks, Sandra.
The fact is, she didn't need anything or anyone, she didn't even have to better herself with a skill or a job, resulting in a meaningless life. Pitiful.
Oh was there any one to guide hrr???,,Gheeez!
Her father did her no favors by setting her up so she never had to strive.
Thank you!!! ❤ very best content on RUclips
Thank you very much indeed, Alyssa - you are too generous! :)
Amazing as always. Thank you.
Thank you!
It's ashamed that money can buy freedom and it has been going on for centuries a d still going on today
I have just purchased your volumes 1 , 2, and 3. Looking forward to reading them. And your voice is amazing.
Thanks , another great selection.
Hooray for this, you and your newest book 🎉❤🎉
Thank you!
Love your stories and artwork! Thank you.
That is nice to know - thank you very much!
Just shows how money talks.
Its great to a new murder mystery told by you.
Thank you, Sally!
I've gotten your books put into my Amazon cart to buy first of the month. I've been debating whether I want to book form or Kindle. I wish you'd add the membership levels to your channel.
@TheyGotAwayWithMurder thanks much, Mr. Mark!! Well, I do understand the pricing problems and concerns about keeping all your materials availableto all, but I am looking to buy your books on Amazon AND sending you overnight a 3rd round of 5 cups of coffee, again!!
Btw, when were you last in the States?? Have you thought about a book tour on the east coast of the States? I definitely like to meet you and get books signed. Any future plans??
@@SMichaelDeHart Thank you very much indeed, Michael - you are much appreciated! I haven't been to the States for a few years now - it would definitely be for leisure purposes, though, not for a book tour...
She was a homely thing...
This time, the events provided a more simple "plot" to the story. The fact that this episode is just as interesting and intriguing as always, even without the "added suspense" of other possible suspects, many preceding events etc., is proof of your masterful storytelling & insights into the people's psyche. You hit the spot always with fitting words and expressions, such as " ...beautiful in a steely way", to name but one. Thank you Mark from one of your greatest fans 😊.
Thank you, you're very kind! It was quite straightforward, as you say - simply a question of whether it was accidental or deliberate. A situation which would probably have proved difficult to prove as murder, but as negligent homicide relatively straightforward, perhaps. I think she was probably simply drunk and very angry.
wonderful night here in Nashville as I have just discovered your channel! i truly am grateful for finding such a treasure! thank you!
Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!❣
❣
New to the channel… most impressed. Leaning back in my chair with a pleasant Earl Grey and an excellent story into which I can escape. ☕️🫖📖
Welcome, Fred - I can smell the Earl Grey from here!
