Nice review, fun to watch! Question, Is the Nikon Z7 II worth it right now at $2500 on sale, or should I wait for the Z8? I have a Z6ii by the way and only do portraits and street.

I will say wait for the z8. Z7II is turning 2 years or it turned 2 years old but yea, please wait for z8 so price can flex. Used market might be interesting to see because my Z6II seems to be falling in price.

I watched another video that said the workflow tethered was better with the mirrorless vs dslr as in once you are in pc mode, you can't control from the camera on a the nikon dslr but can on the mirrorless. Is this true? I am ok controlling from the computer, but sometimes I just want to get behind the lens and do what I need to do to get the shot.

Great Video comparison man, I really like your videso for real life comparisons and of course your opening style :)
Can you do one for Z glass vs F glass as well on a Z camera ? to see how much better Z glass is in reality compared to F glass, cheers
How common is it for landscape photos be unexposed by 4,5 stops and then shadows/highlights be lifted ?
Also, wrt the focusing area of Z7ii which is much bigger than D850, do all of the focus points in Z7ii produce tac sharp photos? I have seen some reports of D850 producing softer images when you select the outer most focus points as opposed to the center ones ?

I just bought a D850 and apparently I've been under a rock. I was so focused on moving from DX to FX that I missed the mirrorless evolution. Looks like I'm stuck with my D850. If I'm shooting next to someone with a mirrorless camera, I will be jealous of eye autofocus and the fact that they have superior video autofocus. Other than that I love my D850 because even though I just got it, I feel like I've always had it. It feels so good in my hands and it feels like it was built to stand the test of time. It's like my old 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L V8 that has never let me down after 250,000 miles. Still runs like a champ. Does it have all the fancy tech? No but it's reliable and I trust it. Another reason I love my D850 is because I have no plans to go shooting in the woods. I'm an event, and portrait photographer and it suits my needs. Thank-you for this comparison. I've been eyeballing the Z9 but I will stay the course lol.

Evf is something you need to get used to for years. Video af in D850 is faulty in firmware and Nikon is refusing to fix it, but camera af is even far better in D850 than Z9. I tested both.

great video as ususal! I am so on the fence about my next camera upgrade between the 850 or cannonballing into the mirrorless world with the Z7ii. I am a concert photographer so outside of the stellar reviews about the z9 (waaaay out of my price range rn) deciding on the z6ii, z7ii, or D850 is my dilemma!

    • @theCameraVille
      @theCameraVille  2 года назад +2

Z7II is probably the way to go if I had to do concerts. If you get into some low-light scenes, the highlight push will be helpful. I would say wait till Fall ( October/November ). Z7III or Z6III will be coming (rumored). One way or the other, you can benefit from the new model, or used market around that time. It's a win-win ~!
D850 is pretty good too~! With, longer battery life, the concert probably can disregard my shutter slap critique. If you ever test out the eye-tracking on mirrorless, you will save a ton of missed shots. I do miss the ovf on dslr but I love the eye-tracking on the mirrorless. Good luck Matt~! hope you come back with some good news man. ( its tough one~! )

I currently have a D7000 and am studying an upgrade to a D850 or a Z7II. I am a food and product advertising photographer. Which body do you recommend I buy?
The lighter body of the Z7II seduces me, in contrast the D850 seems very heavy! Furthermore, I don't know if I'm a big fan of EVF, as most of the photos I take are in the studio, and I use flash with the camera's aperture generally at f/9 or higher, which means I would perhaps see everything always black in the EFV. .
I'm in doubt about what I should do for the upgrade, can you help me?

    • @theCameraVille

I want to point out that the D850 is slowly being discontinued. Any potential repair in the future, may cost more so keep that in mind.
Also the Z lenses are sharper than the F mounts which might give you more reason to adjust your aperture. Its overly sharp even wide open.
I also use COB lights when it comes to static project. I take out my flash if Im even assignments.

Great video as always. The highlights difference was a shocker though, I expected both bodies to perform exactly the same because the sensor is the same. I'm mostly a DSLR guy because I like the ruggedness and heft, it feels more stable in my hand; however, I ended up getting a Z7II instead of the D850 because I found a crazy deal on a new camera for like $2000! Not refurbished or stolen, and I still don't know how I got it for almost the price of a Z6II! A great camera for any type of shooting except fast paced sports and wildlife, though you can still get some good results but with a lot of effort.

    • @theCameraVille

Same here. I was hoping its going to be the same so I postpone the video and kept messing with the push and pull on the dynamic range. Eventually it was the highlight info that had significantly more data than I thought. Same sensor but new render engine may had done this trick. Overall either system is the same if you got good lighting and same exposure setting 🤝🤝.

  • @laurencegoode1387

Great video. Fun, but analytic. Bravo. I have shot the Z7ii since it came out. Z7 before. Z9 as well. I have gone back to my D850s, in general, but not when need small, hidden size.
I find the EVF horribly slow. The tracking drives me crazy and makes me want to throw things. And this is shooting high fashion. The whole user experience is slow and irritating. And imprecise. Also, the manual focus is slow and imprecise. Feels like fake focus, for lack of a better term. A real deal breaker for high priced executive portraiture.
I definitely prefer the size and weight of the D850 for paid use. It just handles better, quicker and with more accuracy. That said, when walking about love the Z7ii's size and weight. Alas, again offset by it's slow and tedious operation which causes many missed great shots. Still, the size and weight for travel is great.
Regarding low light use: The biggest problem with the Z7ii is that when the light gets very low the camera will not be able read it, then just locks up. Talk about throwing things. Also, and perhaps this is apparent in the video, the colors out of the D850 are very so slightly more vibrant than from the Z7ii. Also, overall performance of the D850 in my experience at high ISOs gives an 1/3 to 1 stop advantage to the D850. And I shoot low light a lot.
And now for the death threats. The z lenses. I admit, when first used them were blown away by their "look". Note - not their sharpness. But their snap. The images just seemed to jump off the page. Thought the colors were deeper too. Again, perhaps glimpsed at in the video. As it turns out, they were just darker. Which helps clarify their apparent superior quality. They are more contrasty. In fact, perhaps more so than reality. In terms of resolution, many of the F mount lenses are actually "sharper".
Z lenses overall to my eyes have a more contrasty, snappy look compared to the F mount counterparts. The F mount counterparts had a more film like look. With more accurate color. And a longer, wider color palate. The z lenses have this long contrast range with dark blues and bright whites. But lacking in tonal gradation. The F mounts, somewhat tamer contrast, but with a long, luscious color range, which is more faithful to the truth. What I do when i need to impress the naive is to use z lenses which jump.
What I will say that is overwhelming positive about the z lenses and for me is enough to use them alone is their absence of color aberrations. Minimal, if any blue-violet casts, purple, green or magenta color fringing at high contrast with white back grounds. And the absence of exterior flare. That is enough for me. Those aberrations, though infrequent and not on most lenses drive me batty. And added bonus, which many of my friends base their z election on is that the z lenses are optically better faster. Sometimes wide open, always at least two stops sooner.
Differences between the z and F lenses are varied and complex so will share my individual z lens thoughts on a case by case basis.
The z 24-70mm F/2.8 S ( don't like the F/4 ). One of the most impressive lenses ever made. Never liked and seldom used midrange zooms. I mean, what's the point. Even though the Nikkors and the Canon F/2.8 were optically very good. Till I shot this lens. Due to its lighter weight gave it a shot. Talk about lack of color aberrations. Wow. And images both jump and can have good and almost accurate color. And did I say sharp. A superb achievement and in my mind, the best z lens. There is one flaw in the ointment. At the 24mm out to maybe 28mm there is distortion. Which I will call heinous. So I don't use this lens when know will be at 24mm regularly, but put up with it as the range I regularly do use. 35mm to 60mm is superb. Bravo.
The z 50mm F/1.2 S. Outstanding. Very snappy, bright, with brilliant color, if lacking in the last ounce of depth and saturation. A remarkable lens which a like alot, but use only occassionally due to it;s weight. It's a beast. Still, awesome lens with bright, great color.
The z 50mm F/1.8 S. If you need only one lens, this is it. It does everything well. And very light weight and the most responsive z lens. Sharp. But for me, most importantly, is the color, rich, saturated, reasonably deep. As close as your gonna get to an F mount. Not quite as snappy as the F/1.2 S, which appears more dramatic upon first look. But deeper color, which I like. But we are splitting Donkey hairs here. Bravo.
The z 105mm MC - Here come the death threats. I don't like this lens. I find it very dry, sterile and analytical, which to some degree can be applied to all z lenses. But here, it destroys the quality. I was shocked, albeit I did here mixed reviews before purchase. Tried 3 samples, compared it against the 105mm F/1.4, the 105mm 2.8 Micro AF-D, the 105mm F/2.8 Micro AF-S VR, and a 1970s 105mm F/2.5 AIS. The entire team ( 13 of us ) ranked the z 105mm MC dead last. For as above, but specifically lacking in color, tone and sharpness. It was not sharp. None of the 3 were. Now the lens may appear sharp on its own to the layman. But it is not sharp. And nobody wanted to use this lens. For the record, the 105mm F/1.4 has the most lucious look, with great color, the 105mm F/2.8 Micro AF-D had the greatest sharpness, by far. Scary sharp. However, it lacks something in color saturation. The 1970s 105mm F/2.5 AIS had the most accurate color with the greatest color depth and the greatest true contrast, both interior and exterior. We did not test the 105mm F/1.8 AIS as owned it an consider it a dog. Nor the 105mm DC for it's lack of exterior contrast, despite it tremendous, perhaps best, color quality.
The Z 85mm F/1.8 S: ( Even more depth threats ). Don't like this one either. For all the reasons stated above, but not as bad, by a long shoot. And this lens is reasonably, though not terribly sharp. Biggest drawback is the lack of rich, luminous color. To my mind, Nikon has never made a great 85mm. My favorite, despite a bit limited color depth remains the F/1.8 from the early 1960s, which I still use to this day.
The z 35mm F/1.8 S. Blew me away in store, then after purchase initially. After the initial love affair waned feel I have to test and compare. Not saying it's not awesome sauce. Just saying it has real competition. Being, 35mm F/1.4 G, the F/1.8 G ( tack sharp wide open ), the F/2.0 AF-D, the F/2.0 AIS, the West German made Zeiss Contax 35mm F/1.4, the Summicron and Summilux Leitz candidates and a few others. Use this focal length a lot, so has to be great. Will keep those interested updated. But the lens it as least near excellent.
    More latter.

Last night shot a Halloween event. Dusk to dark. Z7ii slow to respond. Delays, sometimes would focus on its own. Cost me LOTS of missed shots. Shame. Love the form factor, even if the Z7ii is harder and slower to move and deploy than the D850.
Near the end of the event shoot last night, the camera arbitrarily wrote to the second card, deciding to do this on its own. Then, without warning, the camera locked up as the battery died! Never seen such short battery life. For me, literally 20% ( or less ) of what I get out of the D850. Only good thing was when fed up with the Z7ii auto focus, deployed my 60mm AF-D Micro, to this day one of my very favorite lenes, and on the FTZII adapter focused manually, effortlessly, getting better outcomes than with autofocus lenses. What a lot of people don't get is the evolution of the D850 coming on the back of previous models and the competition at the time it came to market. Each iteration of full frame cameras from Canon, Nikon and others were fiercely competing for market share. The numbers of sales meant that they would barely make a profit, but the point was, if their camera was the 'best' then the lower models would upscale in sales volumes. People who wanted a D810 or D850 would still buy a D610 or D5600 instead, if the D850 was just to costly. Then, beyond that, Nikon were having a problem with return on investment. To bring the D850 to market, and to deliver a camera superior in every way possible, yet, sell for a price that the niche market could afford, meant a slicing of profit on a scale never previously done. I would bet that the entire sale of D850 bodies barely broke even on the cost of making them. The mirrorless Z system is perceived by many to be superior (to the best DSLR ever made) yet, the simpler bodies, increased use of electronics vs mechanicals, and the consequent ability to mass produce with barely any hands on assembly makes the Z range very cheap, relatively, to produce over the outgoint DSLR bodies. In essence, Nikon threw the kitchen sink at making the D850 because they knew that its reputation would lead to a hefty toe-in to selling the upcoming Z series. Let us not forget, Nikon were on the ropes 4-5 years ago, at one point, it was feared they were going out of business. I truly think that, with regard to your video, it is clear that in real world shooting, any meaningful differences are inconsequential. If you bolted both cameras down on a heavy tripod and shot a brick wall with a high end prime, then, maybe you'd see something, but your own examples have established that these cameras used in the real world, are indistinguishable.
It took me years as a hobbyist, to trade up both bodies and lenses until I got to the D850 with some pretty exotic glass, and to switch systems now (which is effectively what you have to do, even though the name on the camera is still Nikon) would mean a massive investment, and for what? Your images tell the story well enough to persuade me to stick with perfection and not to spend GBP 8000 to get to perfection V.2 when the difference is virtually nothing.
If you are a pro, and buying your first system, then different arguments apply. You want to move on later to newer bodies and keep the Z glass you bought now, and thats understandable. However, even pros demand durability and, I suspect most of those who are invested in D850 systems, will continue to use them until they die, horribly, with 400,000 exposures and no black paint left on them that you can see.
For the rest of us, particularly hobbyists, owning a D850 is a truly special thing, you should consider yourself very lucky to have one. If you have already invested in really good lenses, then my advice would be to stick with it. If you have no lenses worth mentioning, then maybe a move to the Z system will be good for you. For me, it would be massaging my ego. If you already own a Stradivarius why would you change it?

I like the grip as well on the d850.

Nope. I have very big hands. Use z6 since 2019 every day all day. It has a good grip. It is lighter.

If you only consider the conditions of photography in the studio and look deeply at the colors. #Nikon_d3x is still the best. Provided that you are really a photographer!

0:50 "The OVF, no blackouts and lag" You absolutely have blackouts on an OVF. Per definition if you take a picture, the mirror is flipped up and you don't see anything through the OVF. You don't have lag, that is for sure, but only an EVF has the possibility of blackout free shooting (although the Z7ii isn't there at all). You also don't mention that the Z7ii EVF has a 0.8x magnification vs. a 0.75x magnification on the D850 OVF. Plus plus with an EVF you see what you get, you see the areas of overexposure and the depth of field etc. before you take the shot, instead of having to review the result afterwards and adjust settings. The nice thing about an OVF is that it works perfectly fine while the camera is turned off, and doesn't consume power while turned on.

    • @theCameraVille
      @theCameraVille  6 месяцев назад

The mirrorless is 1-2 seconds behind vs a ms on ovf. This is why z9 and z8 are the only 2 with black out free evf. Cheers

The sensors may be the same but that z glass is a lot sharper than that old f glass. It shows on the photos. You can also tell it has that in body stabilization on those slower speeds. I will stick with dslr as a personal choice, and lack of money, but in terms of raw quality, the z7ii is clearly superior.

If you switch to a Z series lens, the Image quality is sharper and colors are more accurate. Also with Mirrorless you can use Sony, Canon, Fuji, manual lens and the cheaper Nikon F mount lens on the Mirrorless.
