This exact issue is what I was talking to a friend about. By race swapping Ariel, they’re not allowing a black and white mermaid to swim side by side. The new character now replaces the old one and you’ll be labeled a racist for saying you prefer the original character or anything remotely negative about the new one. This isn’t how diversity should be done and it just creates more division. Race swapping helps no one and it actively hurts the diversity they so clamor for.

@@aeoligarlic4024my thoughts exactly. What I wanted for this movie was for it to be a NEW mermaid movie. With a new character and a new story. The fact that it's a "remake" at all is forcing two versions of a character to fight for dominance in the public eye. Why couldn't we have a new mermaid character, allowing both of them to coexist? It's all very disappointing and I'm beginning to suspect that Disney does it on purpose, because strong negative emotion and discourse will get people talking about their films.

Exactly, if they wanted diversity, they could have made something like a live action continuation, and have a mermaid from an equatorial region (Caribbean area for example) and have her meet Melody who is now exploring the ocean with grandpa’s protection and meets this mermaid from a tropical sea who would have dark skin due to more exposure to sunlight. Would have been vastly more interesting and would still be diverse while showing Melody discovering all the other life under the sea (or seven seas given Triton is king of the seven seas)

But just as the same I would be pissed if they they transformed miles into a white dude for a live action and Phil (static shock), was also turned into a white dude because the live action writers want "diversity" bullshit. No, there's nothing being diverse about it. the same way they turned velma and even April was turned black, and that show had nothing of woke bullshit being added to the script. Just says a lot about their whole "diversity" excuse BS. I even had an argument because my former college teacher was like "you can't appreciate art" like btch this has nothing to do with art, it's about sticking to the original, the very same thing we all loved that brings us nostalgia. Sometimes the hate was too much and it overwhelms you, making you question if you really did do anything wrong
Looking at the choices, confronting them would just get yourself yelled at which I'm sure some people aren't comfortable with, and keeping quiet would just give you the "BOOHOO YOU'RE SCARED BACKING AWAY HUH? YOU'RE SCARED THAT WE CALL YOU RACIST HUH???"
So the last resort was to apologize for it even if you believe you didn't do wrong. It'll give them the illusion they're winning, but atleast the hate will stop coming and you can look like you understand the 'message' they're trying to say

I honestly think why my race is like this is cause we're really insecure about the past and our place in the world, so we blame shit on some injustice that isn't there. That's how I feel, people get bent out of shape, I see it in my family and other black people I talk to a lot, course it's not everyone cause my close friends are really chill, but it's very common. Growing up, I was lucky to not be picked on cause of my race, I never felt less than others and never felt like I couldn't do things other people could. I just did stuff and no one ever told me no, and know I can draw, make music, 3d model and edit. I just felt human, race didn't matter to me growing up and still doesn't to me now. I DO get sick of the pandering and shit though lol. I don't need a black character to be on screen for me to be happy cause I don't care if I'm honest. What I'm really sick of is this back and forth of "now it's our turn to be on top!" to give an excuse for communities to be asses and babying minority groups, I personally don't need that shit.
