I collect antique outboard boat motors and I use this method to make gaskets. You can grease one side of the gasket if you want to disassemble the motor later without destroying it. I also keep pinking and cuticle shears and hole punches for cutting them out.

A wise old mechanic taught me a neat trick. Place the gasket material/cornflake packet then get a small hammer and hit the edge of the part your are trying to seal and it will cut a neat cut out of it.

There is a flaw in all these “emergency” gasket deals isn’t it? An emergency (as most of us think of it) is when you are in the middle of nowhere and your parts store is either not near, closed or just don’t have your part. If you are in the middle of nowhere and need a gasket what makes you think you will be able to find a store to buy CF, eat them (no waste) and make your gasket? I see the creative aspect of it. I do not see the $ saving element

The point is that knowing how to do it is better than not and piece of card is far easier to source than the correct gasket or even gasket paper. There are literally thousands of things you could use such as the box from a takeaway burger or the front page of the handbook in the glove box.
