Last Night of the Proms 2020 - Finale - (traditional music only, no audience)

- The BBC broadcast of the 2020 Last Night of the Proms - Finale (traditional music and songs only) performed without an audience for the first and hopefully only time in history due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic this year. They did a great job in the circumstances - and the video contains all the lyrics!
I left out the short section of Scottish, Welsh and Irish music and You'll Never Walk Alone, just because they are not traditional at the Last Night, and not because I have anything against them - they were excellent and are available elsewhere on RUclips. I also omitted the commentary by Katie Derham between some of the performances, just to make it flow better. But I did retain her ending commentary and the end credits.
EDIT - I DID UPLOAD THE COMPLETE VERSION OF THE FINALE BUT IT WAS BLOCKED WORLDWIDE BY A COPYRIGHT AGENCY. PERHAPS BECAUSE OF THE INCLUSION OF THE ADDITIONAL SONGS. SORRY FOLKS.

I'm am very proud to be British, I'm not rasict and I'm not extremist. But I am so happy rule Britannia was included. From red coats to our modern army. There is no shame in being British.
Sad you had to add that caveat about 'not being a racist or extremist'. It should be obvious that one doesn't have to be one to be the other. God Bless you for being a proud Brit, and I'm not British. Love the Proms and I wish Canada aired it. Wonderful to see all the traditional music being played and sung so proudly after the recent BBC wokeness that didnt even want Rule Brittannia played or sung. Wonderful to hear pure patriotism again. Glorious music and atmosphere!!! God Bless!!! An Asian by way of Africa, studied in England, and presently Canadian here.
British rule was ALWAYS racist…just be proud to admire a racist empire and rule!!!! Enjoy!!!! Why cant we be racists??? Dont worry, be racist.
@@leonardoiglesias2394 Rule Brittania is a demand to rule the waves. You can look for hidden meanings in the lyrics but on the face of it, there are no racist lines or references to the empire. Today, the UK is one of the most multicultural and inclusive societies on Earth. Racism exists here of course but it's less prevalent than in the majority of other countries, even in Europe, and certainly the UK is much less racist than countries like Argentina for example.
Times have changed and things can take on new meaning. Take St. Patrick for example. He forced Christian conversion upon the indeginous Celts of Ireland with the threat of violence, and actually killed many Druid priests who refused to convert. Now they celebrate him!
Still Wonderful!! Wish we in the USA could have this celebration!
August 2021 without people this is so sad it brings tears to my eyes.
This rendition of the UK national anthem is so good. It’s a sad thought to think that her Majesty the Queen won’t be alive forever.
hey you were right

Shame on the singers - don't they know the words - it's BRITONS NEVER NEVER NEVER SHALL BE SLAVES. Call yourselves musicians? SHALL, not WILL!
This is because they chose to sing as far as possible the words of the original poem on which the song was based, not the slightly changed lyrics we often hear today. Hence 'never' just once, and 'will'. www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Rule-Britannia/
Looks like someone else doesn't know the words...
No it isn't. It's "will". It's an expression of intent, not fact. Always has been. Illiterate "patriots" are the funniest.
@@ghughesarch It's shall & it's been shall from the first time I watched the Proms, decades ago. Educate yourself.
@@ifmusicbethefoodofloveegc986 No, it's "will" and has been since it was first performed in the 1740s.
Lived in South Africa for 50 years but still brings a tear to my eyes. Well done 🇬🇧🥳
Me too Pat. I have been in SA since 1974 - now living in Centurion. I attended many Proms while living in London and still watch or listen every year. Rule Britannia!
I'm in SA but want to move to england when I grow up!

@@thatperformer3879 that's for sure, it's not a good place to be right now and don't know if it will ever improve. So much hatred amongst the population.
I’m also wanting to move to the UK. South Africa doesn’t care about minorities in the country and have let egos and corruption ruin a beautiful country

From Melbourne Australia: I've watched and listened to the Last Night for over twenty years. Absolutely love it. I'm so glad it came together for tonight. Thanks so much.
Bravo, bravo, bravo. So wonderful to see and watch this Last Night and that the by now standard repertoire was maintained. Tradition, tradition, tradition, more important now, than ever before under these unprecedented circumstances. Thank goodness common sense prevailed, it would not be the Last Night without that glorious music. As an old Prom regular from the 60`s, quite difficult to watch without the unique atmosphere created by thousands of people, but so pleased it went ahead, and thank you for uploading, from a country far, far away :)
I'm interested in BBC PROMS ever year, and I'm impressed by this warm comment. I'm very glad. Thank you.
I feel relieved that Rule Britannica was performed despite earlier controversies. Bravo.

Yes. Beautiful
nah celebrating empire is still racist
@@kenlandon6130 Absolutely nothing racist about celebrating an empire. Celebrating an empire is purely about celebrating the triumphs of the past.
@@n.trstenjak2499 no but celebrating this particular one definitely is considering all that it did...
@@kenlandon6130 Unless you're referring to the international advance that the British empire spurred, I'm not sure what you mean by, "all that it did." Everything that the British touched with their presence eventually became great. Plus, I don't see why the British Empire should be singled out as being inherently bad, unless it's because British people are white, which seems very racist to me.
But it was beautiful to see , beautifully lighted , and done. And isn't lovely to see the Royal Albert Hall finally in it's full glory? Ofcourse i hope that there will be an audience next year. But wasn't this a wonderful alternative.
Thanks to the BBC. I am glad they did not allow this dam virus to defeat them. Also, they listened to all those that enjoy the traditional music and songs, if people do not like them they have the option of turning off. I love them.

Utterly marvellous. In these times the BBC comes through again. I do love the Benjamin Britten arrangement of "God Save the Queen." It seems so apt with its gently thoughtful first verse then leading into an exultant second verse. Bravo.
Thanks BBC and orchestra and singers and the fab light show over London. I can’t understand the fuss over the words of Rule Britannia, far out history is history and we just accept it otherwise we would irradiate most of the past! Cheers Melbourne Oz in lockdown.

As a citizen of what rightfully is Her Majesty’s Colony of Georgia in America, I am fuming and have been since 1776. We in the colonies had it as good as it comes under Her Majesty’s wise and benevolent rule until a group of busy-bodies decided we needed our own country. Things here have been messed up ever since. I hate to social distancing - it really lowers the passion. But thank you for Rule Britannia, and for Handel's See, The Conqu'ring Hero Comes
I made a point of watching this when I heard that the BBC were thinking of banning it. It was great to sing along to and made me proud to be British.
I'm not British and I enjoy the proms every year, what was the bbc thinking lol
proud to be something you are born with... something given to you... lol at least that's something to be proud of.
The BBC never thought of banning the Last Night at the Proms. That is ridiculous. All that was considered was instrumental music to avoid possible infection via the choir. The resolved the issue and it remains beautiful. Thus, shut up.
Such a beautiful orchestration. ..Long Live the Queen.....Long may the British people be free and proud....
Love From the Philippines....
I bloody love this country 🇬🇧
It's just not the same LNotP without a bunch of people in the audience blowing horns during Jack's the Lad. Not that the noiseless version isn't better, mind you, but it's not as "traditional." They might as well have left out (Farewell and Adieu) Spanish Ladies. (Yes, I am aware that they got rid of it years ago, but it was replaced with "regional" songs that were also left out.)
And I have to wonder if the crowd of people watching from elsewhere followed it up with an improptu (or two, or 26 that eventually merged into one) a cappella version of Auld Lang Syne.
Wonderful. Brought tears to my eyes! We cannot let the wokeists take this away from us.

The poor old Beeb comes in for some stick these days but this is one time when they did, eventually, get it right. A socially distanced orchestra playing through traditional tunes was right for the moment & hopefully gave audiences at home a bit of a lift.
I like the "ornaments" to the hornpipe and the clips of the audience in their homes and the park - and the Chelsea Pensioners. Well done to the orchestra and chorus for their efforts in such conditions.

Rule, Britannia! May Britain survive these crazy cultural attacks!
Hello from Canada! May the TENS OF MILLIONS of Britons who now share your magnificent country in this generation have the wisdom to PRESERVE YOUR INSPIRING HISTORY. Britain is generous enough in spirit to include all who would join her. That does NOT mean that ANYONE should be ashamed of Britain's extraordinary journey to the present. For the sake of Western civilization, please cherish what you have conceived, created and continue to build into the future. Beware any person or institution who strives to erode your cultural memory. Respond to such not with emnity, but instead with an invitation to join you as you remain faithful to this treasure - your British cultural legacy.
Orchestra people are fewer according to the COVID-19, but stage set is beautiful !! 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。
There's many people behind working for this, although I cannot seen them.
As good as the music was, it just couldn't compare to past years. It was depressing to not hear the thousands of voices joined together in Land of Hope and Glory or Rule Britannia.
Beautiful National Anthem, arranged by Britten.
Took a tour of the Royal Albert Hall in October, 2019 and was the highlight of my trip over there.
Seeing it in person was outstanding and quite informative as was the guide. My thanks to the
British people for the wonderful time I had in London..
Now we need the BBC to gift the banned Radio 4 opening theme to Time Radio.
Sad, it's just not the same without the participation of the people.
Wasn't Jacks the Lad a commercial for ... ? "Britians best butter"???
A remarkable performance, though I never hope to experience another! So far I witnessed our Dutch 4th of May, the Remembrance Festival from TRBL and Remembrance Sunday in a setting that was impressive and eerie! But even more surreal than (even I) could have ever imagined!
Going to the Proms is definitely on my bucket list!!!
First time I've EVER heard the Wood Fantasia without noises off.
So that's how the performance look like without audiences
Sure. The mischief-making wasn't quite there. But the musicality was the best I have ever heard. Genuinely one of the best Proms ever. Really. There was and won't ever be a Golden Age. The standard of these musicians? They're all above post-grad. Truly stunning. I hardly ever say that I'm proud of Britain. Or being British. But that we pull bout the biggest classical music festival in the world? Forget war. Forget the trite nonsense. This is what matters. And inspires. Indeed I don't even wish to make it a matter of national pride. Let's just celebrate, as human beings, that bicarbonate of soda settles the tummy and music settles the mind. Or stimulates it. Okay. I got this analogy wrong. 😂
Oh! I also hate all of the Union Flag shit. I am proud in this very particular thing. I don't wish to force a constructed ideology on another. That's quite undoing of the spirit of what is.
I'm about as leftie and woke as they come, and I'd be really fucking annoyed if they cancelled these songs from LNOTP.
