BBC Concert Orchestra
Conducted by Paul Daniel
Fantasia on British Sea Songs. Compilation of trad. and other songs made by Henry J. Wood for concert on 21 Oct. 1905 to celebrate centenary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar and which became (and remains) traditional finale to Last Night of London Promenade Concerts, with the audience joining in (singing, clapping, and foot-stamping). In 9 sections: 1, Naval Bugle calls. 2, The anchor's weighed (solo tpt., solo tb.). 3, The saucy Arethusa (solo euphonium). 4, Tom Bowling (Dibdin) (solo vc.). 5, Hornpipe, Jack's the lad (solo vn., solo fl., solo piccolo). 6, Farewell and adieu, ye Spanish ladies (4 tbs.). 7, Home, sweet home (Bishop) (solo cl., solo ob.). 8, See, the conquering hero comes (Handel) (solo hns.). 9, Rule, Britannia! (Arne) (org. and full orch.). For some years the Fantasia was cut, but the practice recently has been to give it in full. Bringing a solo cont. into Rule, Britannia! was Sargent's departure from Wood's score.
BBC Proms no.67 9/9/10
1910 or 2022 still utterly bloody marvelous.
13:46 is truly just beautiful, even the audience humming along makes it more magical
Tom Bowling can always reduce me to tears, damn him!
Bring it back…it’s brilliant 😊
Absolutely wonderful listening
Our history as a sovereign sea faring nation... Bloody fantastic... 🏴

Thank you sir, you are a gent.
I am an amateur string player in an orchestra and possess perfect pitch. This music has been played at many concerts over the years and I love heart on sleeve music, especially patriotic variety! Love the major first inversion chords too!
lol what a hoot i loved it listened to it three times. its all just amazing and what makes britain great.
You mean... this time could turn a french wine into british five o'clock tea.... in´it ?
@@internetperiodista What?
Absolutely spiffing! Shame that this full original version isn't heard at the Proms these days. And what about that clarinet solo with a bit of Hornpipe thrown in? Just wonderful!
Yes, spiffing, just about sums it up...
By Jove, that's the ticket!
Love the cellist in Tom Bowling, and the respect the audience gives him even though they perform the usual "white hanky" mime.
Thank you for uploading! Brass instruments sound majestic!

How to blow your own trumpet indeed!
Bloody PROUD to be British i am!
Excellent!
" Be it ever so humble - there's no place like home ".It may be a long time since we ruled the waves, but by the grace of God we most certainly will never be slaves.
Brexit is real.
never in the annals of human conflct nuff said
Yes. Hope you enjoy the higher prices!
Must add " We're ALL slaves without God in our lives x
with you all the way
I have always loved this piece's transition to Rule Brittania.
The best ever transition was in 1969 when Sir Colin Davis conducted. For some reason the newspapers said that Rule Britannia would not be played! The cheer from the audience when it transitioned from See The Conquering Hero is a cherished memory!
this is the best version
i miss playing this
Great stuff. The Proper Proms.
07:33 Best clip ever. Mairead Nesbitt the Celtic Woman member loves the scene.
@Chris Chance Of course, Mairead Nesbitt from Celtic Woman is a massive fan of the Last Night Of The Proms. Her favourite one is Henry Wood's fantasia on British Sea Songs. Jack's the Lad (hornpipe)
@Dominick Jacob spiffing
@@adamwithey8194 Grow up.
I wish that this full version was played every year at the Last Night, rather than the dis-jointed mix-up that now seems to be used.
Would upset the woke
Robert Schumann Quote : Composing something real unique is writing down a melody/set of notes that no one else ever had done before.... ♫♪
I'm sure he wouldn't have been so uneducated to use 'real' in place of the correct 'really'.
@@Gambit771 he said it of course in German language ♪ in his book says real i quoted it literally (btw my language is not English either) LOL :P ♪ long live music
I must be too much of an Anglophile. I was whistling along just before Rule, Britannia.
colin bell buchansacunt Thanks very much. Unlike most folks, I do realize that the aforementioned statement is a command, not a statement.
+Aramis419 Since you realize it's a command, I'd have hoped you would have remembered the exclamation mark!
Teekeey Misha Ah, dash it all! How could I have forgotten that?!
This should be brought back in it's entirety. What is the point of tradition if it can be altered on a whim?
You English certainly know how to have a great time!
David Robinson that's what your mom keeps telling us
fatsamcastle you didn’t have to reply a year later xD
British if you please, I'm a Scot proud to served twice in the Royal Navy along with many Commonwealth shipmates. It's not only the bloody English!
Welsh thank you very much
I don't see what justifies mock tears over Tom Bowling - many of our sailors killed brutally doing their duty for us.
It is a most moving piece of music.
It's called taking the piss - even in the most serious of moments, British servicemen were able to make dark jokes and laugh at themselves and their situation.
I concur. However, this is the comfortable epicentre of Remain: none of these fruits, their friends or offspring would ever have to step forward and defend our country; that’s for “other people, with whom we don’t associate” ; The Last Night- “Peak Wank” for the nouveau riche !
I agree - it's daft and meaningless and uncalled for. I know it's 'traditional' but some traditions have run their race and should be abandoned.
@@danielw5850 Oh dear. Prejudice abound. I'm a Royal Navy veteran and thoroughly approve of all these 'fruits' and their japes. My sister in law has played in the proms, and many of my friends are musical, I've been in the audience plenty of times and would wave an EU flag and a British one as a proud (and economically and politically aware) remainer. If you look up the history of those who volunteered in WW1 and WW2, you'll see many 'lefties' and artistic types. While Blackadder was fictional, his character in 'Goes Forth' was a parody of the cowardly regular who was happier marching brave Tommies towards the lines whilst sitting back a few rows. Huge numbers of the less traditional officers and men who stepped forward out of their comfort zone performed with extraordinary bravery and courage in the face of uncompromising adversity when called upon by humanity to do their bit.
God preserve Queen Elizabeth !!!
I wish Mairead Nesbitt the Celtic Woman companion can play the Fantasia of British sea songs while she plays the violin in different medleys! She could come to the royal Albert hall in London to participate BBC PROMS for one day. For instance, Jack's the Lad (Hornpipe)

2015, back when it was still legal to be British and patriotic at the same time
And no Euroflags!!!
Crikey - point me in the direction of the legislation which says you can't be - I'd better watch out. It's harder to be British and patriotic because small minded little Englanders (or little Britishers) have made Britain an embarrassment, but it's still legal.
Pity the audience wouldn't shut up for a change and listen to Wood's arrangements ii was meant to be heard.
You must be some sort of a foreigner. Or one of those inferior colonials. LOL

Conductor is a cross of Joe Biden, Dwight Ball and Malcolm Turnbull
What an insult to the conductor for comparing him to Turnball!!! The conductor has entertained people and achieved something which Turnbull failed to do miserably
What the merry hell is going on with that timp part in Rule, Britannia!, 17:10 onwards? I mean, it's awesome, but I really wasn't expecting it to play the entire bass line. Also horns 17:15? should be down the octave?
I've no idea if it's in the 1905 version but it's very common for the BBCSO timpanist to do it in recent years.
That's actually authentic original Wood, 1905. From the manuscript.
mokey's show , anyone?
Pity he did not dress as Henry Wood did. and enter into the true spirit.
How did he dress?
The air horns from the audience completely denigrate the music. I don't think Sir Henry would approve his music also being meddled with. It needs to be produced exactly as the music was written.
Know what you mean, but NO!
It's a tradition on the last night of the proms
Before the invention of the cursed EU flag!!!
15.55 That pink Charlie does not know how to pucker properly.
throw out that friggin' EU flag.
The beauty of the last night of the Proms is that, although the revisionist, woke left whines about it being jingoistic and white supremacist, you will see the flags of many nations being waved. Including many that we've fired the occasional angry shot at. I don't think you'll see such a spontaneous display of tolerance anywhere else. Long may it continue.
@@allenjenkins7947 You seem angry, take a page out of the left's and be nice and chill. Revise your temper.
Are you triggered by a flag that means so much to so many in this wonderful country of ours?
