For everyone looking for design briefs, I have to say that ChatGPT generate some very good design briefs. I've just asked to create a logo design brief for a Japanese restaurant and it gave me Company Overview, Target Audience , Brand Personality , Design Requirements, Deliverables and Timeline
The one for the Department of Arts and Design was brilliant, as it contained the initials in the simplest shapes form (squares being Ds, circle for O and triangle for A) 🤯👏
It does aggravate me that the shapes are super close, but not close enough to touch. As for the “A”, if it he couldn’t read it, there’s likely others who couldn’t either. It is very abstract. My suggestion would be make the “A” and “O” solid shapes. That way the weight is on both sides. And the “D” be either as a hollow square but with rounded corners on the right to read more as a “D” or use the letter instead
I am surprised you missed the shapes attempting to mimick the D O A D initials. Yes, the balance was off, but it was meant to rep Department of Art & Design.
Will, at 3:47 you mention the importance of communicating to a client what actually makes a great logo. Do you have a video somewhere with a deep dive into this concept and your process of showing WHY a logo is great, to a client? Thanks!
As a senior designer i can for sure say that not all clients want the simplest logo, it's all up to the client at the end of the day, your tips really help do help :)
Could you please do more Reddit videos, some are quite eager to get their designs critiqued by you, and since these videos are short you may not be able to review most of them.
I submitted the logo for Alison Cosmetics! Thanks so much for the critique and I really appreciate what you do for the design community! It was awesome to have you look over my work and provide some really great feedback. (Also, I completely agree with your comments on the logo challenge format. A "logo-a-day" format is not for me let alone anyone who wants to produce a polished and well-designed result, I was just using the challenge for the briefs!)
Hey Will, thanks for this video. I have an idea for a video where I would love to hear your approach. How to deal with clients who's companies have reeeeeeeaaaaallly long names. Like 3 word names etc. The first example that came to me Nd was the approach from coca cola (not thaaaat Long), another would be proctor and gamble. I think I found a good solution for my particular issue but I wish there was more opinion from people like you out there to help with making decisions for loooooing name logos.
I agree Department of Art and Design was brilliant. The reason that he used those shapes for because they work just like the letters the boxes were the D Circle was the letter o in the word of and a triangle was the A in art
30 day logo challenge, i tried it at my early graphic design days and boy, i got anxiety out of it. Best way to learn is through proccess and time. Rushing a logo is just a funny challenge but thats all there is. Goodbrief is also good for imaginery briefs.
Sometimes I think your comments about negative space in a logo when it's the size of a grain of rice is over the top. I agree that when logos are shrunk down you still want to be able to distinguish what they are but it's not always realistic and I don't think it's a deal breaker. In almost all instances, no logo is going to be shrunk down that small. Shrink down the Ford logo, the LG logo, the Starbucks logo...the details and negative space are gone...let it go.
I didnt understand the deal about negative space either until I started design school. Graphic design is all about communication. when it comes down to Negative space it (from what my teachers have told me) is the designer's attention to detail. If there is too much or not enough negative space it is distracting. and can drive people away from your brand. I can see why he nitpicks it tho. lol
My thoughts exactly! I think the fact they represent the initials is lost on most people and rounded edges would help guide them to that realization. I'm not sure why everyone loves that logo so much. I think it comes off as arrogant
I couldn't help but think of the Toronto Raptors looking at the Sushi Zen Logo haha! The worst part about the Logo challenges for me is the lack of feedback. It is nice to have feedback along the way from clients otherwise you are only designing for yourself. I've found it useful to have my wife read me the brief so she can "own" it when I show her my designs.
i think the sushi zen logo looks appropiate to be put on the website or a meal package or something, but i understand why it would be a problem when printing in black and white. although, i think that can be solved by having a variation of the logo where the rising sun in the back is absent and it's just the torii gate and the circle. doing this will make for a much clearer silhouette.
Personnaly the 30 day logo challenge was a very good experience at my begining and developping a lot my creativity and my capability of fixing things/fiding solution
Someone before me has probably already said this but would be fun if you would post a picture on Instagram, Twitter or Reddit with a brief as the text and some inspiration photos as the post and then give your viewers like a week or two to make a logo or design or something to that and then post it on Reddit or with an hashtag on Instagram so you later on can react to them like in this video. And by this you maybe also make a logo yourself that you present in the beginning of the videos too? Like weekly challenges or something. Great video!
It's a great idea and something we've been thinking about! People enjoyed the Solar Drop brief and uploaded their own to Reddit which was so cool to see!
Glad to see I’m not the only one who was screaming at their screen for the Department of Art and Design. Ironically will said “ooh okay, I get it” on the slide that explained the shapes representing each letter 😂
so no one's gonna point out that in the DOAD logo, the size between the square and the circle are not optically balanced? there must be overshoots when using rounded shapes next to flat shapes to maintain balance.. pretty sure it was not intentional.
Sir, I am interested in Logo design but I want fake companies for design a Logo to add my portfolio..So pls tell about any website or what would you prefer for me
5:56 yea you probably wouldn't want to have the logo on the top right corner, red background with a white circle and a black motive inside... If you unfocused your eyes, this version could easily be misinterpreted as the Hakenkreuz flag xd
Hi. I've been watching your videos for a while now and love your stuff. Can you tell me the URL of the Reddit Group you refer to? If you actually have, I'm an idiot, but I excel at that!
That swan logo, I think there needs to be a contrast between negative and positive space, for me there's WAY too many lines which for the brain creates too much unnecessary information. Fill the wings in the back and use the neck and head as negative space, it would simplify the logo and make it easier to read in 5-10 seconds, and I also think it would allow the brain to quickly see- Swan + Lotus

Yeah, that's why the designer couldn't use a hexagon as Will suggested :D
It does aggravate me that the shapes are super close, but not close enough to touch.

And they misspelled ‘stationery’ on the mock-up.
Hat.
I agree it was really nice. D O A D.
I am surprised you missed the shapes attempting to mimick the D O A D initials. Yes, the balance was off, but it was meant to rep Department of Art & Design.
Exactly! A hexagon lol
Thank you for your critique on Department of Arts and Design logo, next I will make sure to watch for kerning and that mockup text.. lol. :D
I liked the play on DOAD that you included
@@hcwally I liked it too, almost everyone in the comment did, but somehow Will didn't😥

@@negashasayehegnzeray5788 I'm doing one episode per week. We recored them well in advance so there's a time delay. :)
A meme contest would be hilarious!🤣🤣

Thanks for pointing this out. I'm a designer but I'm tired of our sometimes UNNECESSARY nitpicking.

YES to a meme contest for design!! 😂🙌
11:47 but the first ones sooo cute! its like a pokemon annnd it looks like its moving!
These are so wholesome! It's nice to see your encouraging and useful feedback to so many people trying to learn ❤️
The DOAD logo would be cool if the squares were rounded on the right side.
My thoughts exactly! I think the fact they represent the initials is lost on most people and rounded edges would help guide them to that realization. I'm not sure why everyone loves that logo so much. I think it comes off as arrogant
Thank you so much...every tyme you appload a video I learn a lot..God bless will
The pyramid one looks a bit like it’s in Keith Hearing’s style of art
Hey! Any tips to start learning graphic design from scratch? Ai looks like a maze to me 🤪

such a missed opportunity on that DOAD logo, those shapes for the squares could of been semi circle.
The Square is a big D. He didnt miss it. He just exceucted better as D leaves less useless negative space with no meaning
I really enjoyed this type of videos, it really make me realize my mistakes, so thank you a lot
Glad to see I’m not the only one who was screaming at their screen for the Department of Art and Design. Ironically will said “ooh okay, I get it” on the slide that explained the shapes representing each letter 😂
Will, when is the next logo competition coming up?
In the Owlkast one, I know they were going for the o and k in the diamond…but the way the diamond cuts off the o, it looks like the Dead Kennedys logo
I would love a design meme review
Is there some type of website that allows you to put your logo design on mockups?
That background song is so emotional😃
Hey will awesome content man 💪
Just wana ask if i want my work to be reviewed like in this video where should i submit ?? 🙏
That Solid “ No.” should be everyone’s mood for life 😂 !
Thank you!! I truly appreciate all the support. I have to say...that logo was a journey in itself. Forward now
Amazing video as always!
"If you can reduce it or get rid of it, it's generally a good thing"... *politicians start sweating prprofusely*
Can we use ibis paint for logo design?
I think that it wouldn't be the best choice, since it's for raster graphics and not for vector
the department of art and design logo is very similar to the MOCA (museum of contemporary art) logo...
I'm surprised we're few who noticed that
so no one's gonna point out that in the DOAD logo, the size between the square and the circle are not optically balanced? there must be overshoots when using rounded shapes next to flat shapes to maintain balance.. pretty sure it was not intentional.
When are you going to post your class on skillshare?👀
Did everyone miss the DOAD logo is someone standing next to an easel?
that meme contest would be soo funnny
I dont know why.... But I really like your delivering way...
Yes! please, MEME Review
Me to Autofocus : I'll find you and I'll Adjust you.
You didn't realize that the logo of Department of Art and Design spells DOAD, so the triangle can't be replaced by a hexagon.
can you review new google logos?
Great job Mr Will, hope i see my logo on the next video 😁
The Department of Art and Design logo reminds me too much of Squid Game's Korean logo 😅
Will, when is your next logo challenge and how do I apply?
Sir, I am interested in Logo design but I want fake companies for design a Logo to add my portfolio..So pls tell about any website or what would you prefer for me
Why you camera lens is making ypu blurry sometime?

meme contest yep!
Finally 😀
Call yourself a designer and completely miss the DOAD concept
Thats a good idea 11:21
Yess
do a meme contest
Editor's note:
We never do.
You didn't really realized the triangle stands for the A?
I didn't either, until it showed the additional mockups
You're not moving back and forth a lot, you're much better off setting your focus manually. The AF hunting in this video is insane.
