I would've absolutely bought the M1 iMac in a heartbeat if there was a 27" option for extra $200 or something like that, it would've been a dope machine, but a 23.5" display is a bit too small for my liking, despite the quality of the display being pretty great.

Apple for sure already had the Studio Display in mind last year. If they also released a 27" iMac with the exact same screen speakers mic and camera, plus keyboard & mouse, AND A COMPUTER INSIDE for the same price… Then people would realize how overpriced it is 🤡

@@chidorirasenganz People asked for that in 2017, now it’s brand new and already outdated ! Even MacBooks have better screens 🤷‍♂️
The Studio Display is just an easy 5-in-1 solution for laptop users, with basic technology, no adjustable height and large bezels… Should be $1099 without the A13 chip, and a normal 1080p (lol) camera instead of the always cropped ultra wide one.

    • @chidorirasenganz
      @chidorirasenganz 2 года назад +2

@@joffrey6831 It takes time to develop new products. Plus it wasn’t a concern until 2018-2019 during which they were working on the apple silicon transition.
What 5k display can you get for 1099$? The ultrafine lg is 1300 and made of creaky plastic with worse speakers, cameras etc
The Macbooks only have better contrast. They are inferior in size, resolution and brightness.
The monitor needs a processor so the a13 is fine. It would be dumb to use anything older than that.
Center stage is awesome and it doesn’t require you to use place your monitor in a certain angle to use your webcam. Plus the changing the framing when other people enter the frame.

    • @joffrey6831
      @joffrey6831 2 года назад +7

@@chidorirasenganz You think Apple can’t develop a monitor while working on Apple Silicon ? At least you agree it’s 3 years too late…
Because there is no other option doesn’t mean it’s a good deal 🙄 You’re right about the LG Ultrafine costing $1299… in 2019.
MacBooks screens have more than higher contrast :
      - can be set to 1000 nits (so not at all inferior in brightness)
      - deep blacks with mini-leds
      - 120Hz
      - thin bezels
Same pixel density, just smaller screen for obvious reason.
No one care what chip is inside a monitor. Apple marketed the A13 inside like it was revolutionary 😱 Yet you can’t even use Center Stage on a Windows machine (meaning MacOS could handle it), and it doesn’t even support AirPlay !!
Center Stage on a desktop computer will only be useful 1% of the time anyway, not worth being stuck with a cropped image.

I *did* get the 21” iMac, many years ago, maybe about a year after it first came out. I opted for the 16GB RAM, 512GB version mainly because the video editing software I planned to run recommended 16GB; it was also the first time I every used a macOS machine.
I eventually replaced it because Apple stopped supporting that model with its macOS updates, replacing it with a Dell workstation that I bought on sale, which was a mistake because the chipset was frustrating when it came to WIN10 updates, and so I got the 24” M1 iMac in blue, 16GB RAM and 1TB drive. I’m really happy with it as a home workstation.
I opted for this size because I find 27” was really too big for my home office. I have one of those wooden DIY home station units that came out in the 1990s back when everyone was still using CRT terminals for monitors, and the cubbyhole space allotted for a monitor was just too small for a 27” monitor size.

I have a 2019 21.5" iMac that I bought as an upgraded refurb from OWC in August 2020. With 32gb of RAM and a 2tb OWC SSD, it is simply amazing for everything I do with it. It is the perfect size for my desk, I don't need a 27" 5k display. You know one of the things I like the best about it? Its simple 3.6GHz 4-core i3 without Turbo Boost, which means I have never heard a fan without pressing my ear against the case and the thing barely feels warm even after hours of heavy use. And I can boot into Mojave so I can use old, never-upgraded/abandoned 32-bit applications when I want to.
I don't edit videos for a living so rendering speed isn't a major issue for me. I am not playing the hottest new game that was released last week so the 2gb Radeon 555x doesn't bother me at all. OWC still sells these upgraded refurbs, if you just do "general computing" stuff, this thing is a great choice.

Since my wife needed it for our design business (Flavor Graphics), it needed to not have any compatibility issues that early M1 platforms were having. For the DAW I use (Studio One) and third party plugins, even with more workability with M1's now, music software companies tend to take much more time to adjust and conform to new cpu's and operating systems. Probably partly because musicians/recording engineers and producers also like what they like and if it works, they won't fix it or change it for decades until it just won't work anymore. If only the price of CPU's would come down a little...

For ease of use and everyday tasks I'd jam on the imac every day... but, for serious content creation I'd be drooling over the power in the Intel Mac's upgrade... yeah, I'm a long time PC guy... that really gets my interest up in these crazy days and uncertain times... an upgradable hands on machine it is.....

    definitely agree with your assessment.
i love the intel iMac for its upgradability but it’s still a $400-$500 iMac at the end of the day on old intel platform
for about the same price, i’d go for the M1 with its bigger screen, design and other features

So you would rather pay for cellphone and mobile device architecture cpus and gpus that are currently in most iPsds, Samsung’s, and iPhones? Why not just get you a Raspberry Pi 64-bit with 8gb or one of the more powerful SBC’s and do the DIY thing until reveals their patent, which is very similar to mine, another couple of products that are already out, and one that just got upgraded and re-released. If you have Samsung mobile devices, tv’s, etc., you should be smiling from ear to ear!! You already know what Apple is about to do!! If I find any of these previously released devices, I will show you exactly why all Apple customers who paid thousands of dollars for mobile cpu arm architecture in their expansive ass machines, are going to REVOLT!! I hope they release the folding iPhone, that I have been waiting for for at least four years now, soon; then I can really show off! Especially since it should come with a worldwide required standard usb-c port!! Yay!! Everyone in the world will understand what I am talking about then!! In the meantime, let me see if I can get the machine I want and combine with one of Samsung phones or a Raspberry Pi, or similar device!! All of us waiting to buy our next phone and not a new cpu, we will truly be blessed!!

I think the best deal is really a refurb 202 27 iMac. You can get the for good deals and can upgrade the ram to 128gb whenever you want. There are more ports, the screen is bigger and higher resolution, and performance is basically the same as the M1 chips. The newer M2 chips beat it, but those computers all cost a lot more once you add getting a bigger display etc

Luke, man, here's a testimony of someone who bought the Intel's Mac vs someone close to me who bought the M1 Mac. The exact both models of your video.
My Intel model is a BEAST! And yes, it's an Intel's i3 processor but with 3.6ghz of clock and 8gb of RAM. This other acquaintance, decided to go for the M1 model since he's a designer, edits videos and images and thought that the M1 processor would 'make up for the 8gb of RAM'. Clearly a mistake, but that's what happened.
So after talking to this friend, the conclusion I got: yes, it's an 'outdated' Mac, though I really love this metal aluminum frame and the Apple logo right on front - I actually prefer this design over the newer Macs. In addition, THE PORTS! You get FOUR USB-A ports, plus two USB-C (one is Thunderbolt I think, I've never used it), a 3.5mm audio jack AND ethernet port!! And those, my friend, make A LOT of difference on the daily for me (bare in mind, it's naturally my own scenario here and his).
Apart from that, I keep a lot of apps and tabs open, even using Safari it's a lot of processes for 8gb of RAM to handle, so there's that amazing 'feature' of this model you mentioned on the video: this one is upgradeable! So all I did was to swap my 8GB for 32GB. That's all I did, and this thing is the powerhouse of the house! I can only imagine what it feels like with an i9 inside! 🙌🏻
On the other hand, my friend can't seem to do much of anything with only 8gb of RAM - I still adk him why he'd buy something not appropriate for his own use, but anyways...
Point is, people, you can definitely save a lot of money with an incredible machine. I tell you, I keep a lot of things open here, many tabs open (Safari and Brave), you can upgrade this desktop to make it last for long years, even if you just throw in some more memory like I did. Plus the ports, you get a whole bunch of ports to have fun with and not the scarcity that the M1 brings (if that's your case).
Great vid Luke, these are indeed cheap and sick desktops that many people miss out on. Great value indeed!

Dual-boot it Windows10 Pro and OS X Mojave. It's the last of an era.
Easily run most of your Linux needs through OS X, and potentially your Android needs through Windows. No need to settle for the kiddy macOS and Windows 11 builds.
I would probably change my tune with the next-gen lineup, for instance, Dualbooting on new platform, Apple M2 Max chip, a 30-ish inch size, or a tabletop-swivel for touchscreen.

I just paid equivalent of $512 USD including tax, after promotions, for a brand new M2 Mac Mini from Apple.
I spent another $100, and bought a Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard (with numpad, no Touch ID) from Facebook marketplace for a great deal . They’re in perfect condition and I will probably make money on them if I need to sell them in the near future. And I literally found 2, fully functional 1080p Monitors in my buildings recycling area. A quick cleaning, and digging for some cables and they work great.
I sold my old MacBook Air to buy the new Mini, so it literally cost me $2 out of pocket for a brand new machine. The accessories will probably end up costing me nothing. The MacBook Air I sold was in fantastic condition, and a very capable laptop, I’m sure it will serve its new owner well.
Mac computers are amazing, and will last for over 10 years, no headaches, if treated well. My new mini is about 5x as powerful as my old Intel MacBook Air, and runs average 60-70 degrees C cooler, even if I push it harder!
This iMac, in my opinion, is not a good a deal.
I’d get a mini, an Air, or make the investment in a MacBook Pro. Macs are worth it

Good video Luke but I’d like to add a third option - 2009-2011 iMacs - yes they are older and screen isn’t 4K and the software is no longer supported by Apple BUT they are easier to upgrade, much cheaper $100-300, and Mojave or Catalina can be patched installed. I’ve got a 2011 iMac that has i7 quad core (as opposed to i3 in Luke’s example) with SSD and 16GB of ram. Runs pretty well for my modest usage. I mean for most ppl who want to browse, email, stream, office task etc, it is a good machine :)
