I've said it before, I'll say it again: Strive Faust only makes me want for him to lose so he can find some peace. He doesn't look creepy or otherworldly, he just looks like someone with genuine depression. He's clearly starved himself, he moves lethargically, and he barely cares about the battle in front of him. I get why they made the change, but for me it just hits too close to home.

Apparently it's actually a gun-sword that just happens to look like a lighter. If you look at his old animations for Tyrant Rave in the old games he literally holds the thing like a rifle and shoots the the enemy
Obscure fact about May's design here: there is a small heart tatoo on her thigh(I think it only appears on the left side and you will maybe need to perform a move to actually catch a glimpse of it.) I found out when someone was checking her normals and caught a glimpse of red near her thigh. I then looked close at her and saw it was actually a heart shaped tatoo.
I wouldn't really call it obscure, I see it at the start of literally every match. But hey if she's old enough to get a tattoo now then I guess that deems her officially legal. My head canon will simply be she got it in celebration for becoming an adult and so no one will treat her like a kid anymore like she always complains about
I think the thing I adore about Giovanna’s overall design is how “simple” it is. She’s not wearing anything crazy or bombastic. Just trainers, loose-fitting trousers with braces and a shirt. But hey, maybe I just have a thing for sharply dressed women. I am a Helltaker fan after all. Also dog. The dog is cute as fuck.
It makes sense her design is simple since besides being a secret service agent Gio is pretty aloof or even apathetic and probably doesn't care about being needlessly flashy. Even the fan service of her cleavage is in line with her character since she is doing it on perhaps to attract a good man.
I think Giovanna's design is cool, but what really makes it great is the ghost wolf thingy she has. The color scheme of it compliments her own so well that it elevates the character to a 10/10, without the wolf, she's more like an 8, 7.5
I can still remember just how surprised Max was when Axl's new design was revealed. Also, I think that if they gave Leo back his old hairstyle he'd be a 10/10. How can you have the name "Leo Whitefang" without that glorious mane?
I like how she has the bandages from xrd as she got her arm and leg blown off by a gigantic plasma canon, putting herself at the brink of death in the process, Raven literally had to recreate/ attach her severed limbs
As an old Faust main, I'm so torn on his new design. While I can dig what they were going for with a scary horror type character, he just doesn't feel even remotely the same as he used to. I picked up Faust because his goofiness is what made him so much to play for me.
I dont even main him and I'm salty about it. He feels like a completely different character. Its like they wanted to make Strive a lot more serious and it may have taken out a bit of it's charm in the process.
Yeah a lot of what made me like Faust was that "Looney Tunes" stuff. He was the wildest, wackiest dude that stood out in a cast of chatacters that all stand out.
basically, they simplified the characters. They gave it something that says its personality, and they simplified the rest. your review is a very good character design video for those who want to learn video game design.
@@biorobot2 agree about Bedman, his ,,bed as a weapon” gimmick is well implemented in gameplay. May's glow-up from "Token loli character" to "Early-20's cutie" really makes me want to play her in this game despite never being interested in her beforehand. I wouldn't call her design the best in Strive, but it's definitely the best improvement from Xrd imo
I just realized for the first time that in Gio's character art you can clearly see the outline of her body through her pants. That is some weapons grade BADONK happening there, wow. @_@
“Why is Axl a 10/10 in this game” BECAUSE THEY FINALLY GAVE HIM PANTS!! Also, I can’t be the only one who thinks Xrd Faust looks like he came straight from Soul Eater, right?
I think both Fausts look straight out of Soul Eater. XRd Faust looks like he's hanging out in DWMA, and Strive Faust looks like he's tripping out on Asura's Madness wavelength and having a blast.
Something really interesting and Ironic about I-no’s design is that the gave her what they took away from characters in XRD and that was the waist drape and made it look good.
Potemkin's stance! Alongside his increased size and the fact that he's slightly hunched hover, Potemkin feels absolutely massive now. How his hands are held out and parallel to the ground and when he stands up straight during Buster really sells his size way better than his old "inherited" pose from pre-Xrd.
This may sound crazy but when I look at the strive characters in motion and how they are designed I get the same feeling I did waaaay back when I saw capcom’s marvel sprites in the arcade for the first time.
I feel that Chip being this buff defeats the purpose of him being a glass cannon. Like, he's just as buff as some other characters now so why should he have less hp than everyone else? 😅
Yeah he's the only character that bugs me. How can u be so buff yet so squishy. And a ninja does not need all that muscle mass, they would slow him down. His past iteration make more sense, at least for me. They should make him the same size as ky. That huge ass belt really throw me out too.
@@mimo5698 You can’t say the a ninja doesn’t need to be that Buff then, disregard his most Ninja aspect which is the belt and Even if you are that buff Being Mobile isn’t That hard for Ninja like Chipp, and Skinny Chipp looks Weird..as heck

He's probably just buff cause he's crazy fit and active cause of GG story but he's squichy cause he's hella weak compared to everyone else.
@@megaman7424 The drug he was addicted to also enhanced your perceptive capabilities, it's one of the reasons his eyes are permanently Red. His training and cleansing of his body let him tap into Ki, even though he's not of Japanese heritage as well.
Old Anji feels more KOF if that makes sense. The new Anji screams what Guilty Gear is and its bombastic personality, but the old one just feel too grounded on GG standard, you know? Again, making it feel more in line with old school KOF more than anything else
Something people apparently don't fully appreciate about Chipp's "bigass nutsack belt" is that it emphasizes his attempts at keeping Japanese culture alive: That "belt" is a shimenawa -- some of you may recognize it as the same kinda rope that Orochimaru from the Naruto series ties around his waist. However, Chipp and Orochimaru tie their ropes differently and though it may be a detail that's easy to overlook, it is in fact culturally significant -- the Japanese are quite peculiar with details like how you tie a knot or how you wear your clothes. For example, a yukata should be worn with the left side of the robe covering the right and pulled over to the side of the body. This is important as, in Japan, corpses are often dressed with the right side of the yukata placed over the top of the left before burial... The way Orochimaru ties his shimenawa invokes misfortune, while the way Chipp ties it invokes good fortune (kinda similar to how as a horseshoe represents fortune or misfortune depending on whether it's put like so "U" or so "∩")... Shimenawa are also traditionally used to represent the boundary between the material and the spiritual. You may, for example, see them wrapped around trees that have been declared sacred, (done in order to keep the spirit of the tree tied to the tree,) or over the entrances of shrines or torii gates. And seeing as Chipp now has a spirit animal, (a kamaitachi/sickle weasel, a Japanese wind spirit,) it's quite appropriate for him to wear an accessory that calls attention to his closer attunement to the spiritual world... Our boy has gone from a weaboo who appropriated Japanese culture and sprinkled his lingo with contextless Japanese words to a man with some proper understanding and respect for the culture he's so fascinated by.
I-no´s design got me into Guilty Gear when i first saw her Strive trailer, designs are very important. Then the kickass music and fun gameplay got me hooked in the series
I love how Strive took Xrd's hyper anime designs and brought it to like anime realism. Like most of the outfits just look like fits you could just go and buy and they're stylish as hell
I *really* dislike Chip's new look. His whole deal is being quick, and his Xrd design sold that really well; muscled but wiry, very agile looking. New Chip is a wall of meat that doesn't look like he should be able to move at all, let alone be the speedster that he is. Xrd Chip all the way, man.
I feel like people are really missing the changes on Zato himself. He might look the same at first glance but they actually added a lot minimalistic features which makes him feel more complete and just much much better looking. Hes an easy 10/10 for me and the best hes ever looked.
Yup grounding is the best term for it. I see a shit ton of OCs where they have a shit ton of shit going on with them in their design and it honestly distracting. Taking parts and pieces of what make the char that char and focusing it on that aspect def pushed alot the chars in better positions.
I bought gg strive pretty much solely based on Giovanna’s raw character design despite having little prior experience or interest in fighting games, so your 10/10 rating of her design was extremely validating. Simple color scheme, BIG PANTS, and the world’s most powerful suspenders-that’s a recipe for an amazing character design.
I really like how that changes to Ino ante different from every other character too. They made her hat *bigger* and *gave* her an ass cape, it's great.
For me, it's a tie between her, I-No, and Ky. May's new design visually aged up the character without losing any of her personality in the process. Her old look gave me vibes of a child adoring their hero and trying to dress up just like them, which in this case led to May's wacky pirate look out of inspiration by Johnny. Her new look feels more like a teenager or young adult still inspired by that hero and in love with their old look, but allowing themselves to grow up. I-No's amplifies her witchiness, and makes her more imposing than her previous versions, which is important when she's supposed to be the final boss of the story. Also, the particular shade of red they used for her in Strive is so much better than Xrd. I love Ky's for the opposite reason I like May's. It ages the character, but also shows just how much he's changed from GG1 until now. Compared to his old Holy Order uniform or his kingly garb clearly inspired by it, it's more easy-going and relaxed but no less regal-appearing. Old Ky seemed ready to fight a war at a moment's notice, and New Ky is at peace and enjoying every second of it.
I-no is the rare example of a girl character redesign that shows more skin WHILE looking cooler. Something about the material & cut of her new clothing says "rock star!" And as a rock star, it makes sense she'd go for sex appeal. And as one of the few characters with a long coat in Strive, it helps distinguish her as especially witchy.
I gotta say, one of the things that got me into Ramlethal in Xrd was her shark teeth. I like how her appearance has changed along with her character, as she's become a much softer person overall, but her being dangerous was also part of her appeal for me.
While we certainly have different tastes and styles, I just wanna say I love these kind of videos you do. I'm huge on visual design and concept work for characters and it's nice to see you give shout-outs and perspectives to new and old designs both.
i'm a big faust main and i really like the strive redesign, i just wish there was more of an explanation given for it in the lore considering just how radically he changed
One of the reasons wr say "this is going to be my main" is for the design, even mechanics or gameplay is secondary when it come to how a character look, and how much it design appeal to you, that's why I play ky, I think he looks cool as F, and that's why I will never play poten
same here with Nago. You give me a vampire samurai with a long sword I'm gonna main the vampire samurai with a long sword. And Faust's redesign made me use him during the pre-Nago betas.
C'mon the best Sol look was when he was part of the order. Look it up. Ohh plus XRd May look like person who would be a pirate so I prefer XRd May TBH🤔
I love how good they've aged May but I could agree she could use something a bit more thematically piratey. Not all her outfit though, but maybe add something.
Something missed about the design of new Potemkin is how his eyes went from just generic lit eye shapes to those mechanical ones constantly adjusting focus. It really tops off the big and intimidating look.
One thing I love about ArcSys is that they absolutely NAIL badass and sexy ladies that you can tell are bad ass at first glance. Baiken, I-No, Millia, Giovanna, Ramlethal all look as beautiful as they are capable of killing you easily and then you still have badass characters like May who fights with a giant fucking anchor, Jam who is obviously the resident Bruce Lee trope in Guilty Gear, and Dizzy who literally has an angel and a grim reaper as her guardians (and I should mention that the grim reaper will nuke a place in an instant if Dizzy is even remotely threatened and he's NOT the one with the worse temper). Then we get to Elphelt and while she may not LOOK badass, she puts the GUNS in the Guns N Roses that apparently inspired her character design. And this is just Guilty Gear. I haven't even touched BlazBlue
While I’m still unsure if I’ll ever play Strive due to my fighting game inexperience, I’ll admit straight up that Ramlethal was probably the character that first got me interested. I pretty much concluded that if I played the game, if nothing else she would be the character I tried to learn first. After my wonky practice with her during the beta tests, I’m unsure if I will ever pick up the full game. But if I do, I’ll be giving her another chance.
I'm very curious how they'll translate Baikens design to Strive though I can imagine it will include a more "grounded" haircut compared to her gigantic ponytail in Xrd.
These new designs aren’t exactly more realistic, but they got rid of a lot of the clutter and went for more simplistic but still stylish and appealing designs that still fit with Guilty Gear.
I've been in love with these character designs since Strive was announced. Love each and every one of them. Even though it seems more calm and casual in comparison to their previous versions, I still think the designs in Strive are the best.
I do hope a day comes where Max at least streams a training session with nagoriyuki. There is a bit of a barrier, but once you understand the flow and the options they have available to you, he is so satisfying.
Love most of the redesigns -- I-No, Sol and May, and especially Anji, look leaps and bounds better -- but disagree on Ky and Leo. Nago shows you can do a more detailed and outlandish outfit in the Strive style and make it look awesome, and I wish those two could have had something that evoked their old attire while getting the same kind of glow-up most of the cast did.
Agree, Strive's designs are just fire in general. One thing I'd say I prefer in Xrd is the... how to call it, the color filter maybe? Strive has like this more opaque kinda filter that makes the colors less vibrant which all in all is ok (I don't like too much color saturation tbh, not that I think Xrd had that though) but when the background effects come into play I think it takes too much off the colors. Maybe make available an option to turn off background effects on the characters if possible I think could be great. About the characters, the only one I'm kinda torn between designs is probably Leo. I like his Strive design but probably with his Xrd boots or just some cool boots I think it could look better. There's something about him wearing just pants and shoes that seems a little too grounded for me. And probably an unpopular opinion but in general I do prefer the X/XX body designs (body proportions specifically) more than the Xrd/Strive ones, despite liking some characters being more buff.
Hard disagree on Chipp, I think the belt overcomplicates it by adding another color that doesn't harmonize with anything else. His giant pants also give him this weird bottom-heavy silhouette that I don't think works for him. I liked his old design specifically because the "ninja" theme was kind of subtle. It was more in line with his concept of being a street punk that took up ninjutsu
There’s also the fact that he’s built like a brick shithouse. Someone should tell the character designers that it’s okay if a male character doesn’t have arms the size of tree trunks.
I’m pretty sure you can sum up literally every character design in Strive with the statement “Character’s (X) looks thicker compared to their old design”
I loved the video but I feel you didn't give enough credit to the cartoony aspects of Faust that still remain. He is scary looking, sure, but alot of his animations are still very 'rubberhose' and silly like crouch kick, item throw, air dash and mixmixmix to name a few.
Nago is probably one of the best designs in the game. I do agree though, there isn't very much that gives off the impression that he's a vampire. But his design is just so cool that it's not even a big deal
I feel like the character art doesn't always shows just how much the characters have changed due to some of the posing blocking their traits. If you look at Zato's character model on Xrd, you'll see just how buff he's gotten.
They didn't revamp Potemkin because you can't improve on perfection.
Rooflemonger is that you?

It makes sense her design is simple since besides being a secret service agent Gio is pretty aloof or even apathetic and probably doesn't care about being needlessly flashy. Even the fan service of her cleavage is in line with her character since she is doing it on perhaps to attract a good man.
I think Giovanna's design is cool, but what really makes it great is the ghost wolf thingy she has. The color scheme of it compliments her own so well that it elevates the character to a 10/10, without the wolf, she's more like an 8, 7.5

May’s redesign is great, and I’m genuinely sad I never managed to grab that May hoodie that Arcsys was selling.

The LOOK of the game was what really sold me, especially the character design.

I really like how that changes to Ino ante different from every other character too. They made her hat *bigger* and *gave* her an ass cape, it's great.
In my opinion, I think May had the biggest glow-up in Strive

Something about the material & cut of her new clothing says "rock star!" One thing I love about ArcSys is that they absolutely NAIL badass and sexy ladies that you can tell are bad ass at first glance.
I'm very curious how they'll translate Baikens design to Strive though I can imagine it will include a more "grounded" haircut

Personally, I think I-no's new shades puts her over the top into 11/10 territory.
Imagine thinking chips old ninja design was ever subtle.
There’s also the fact that he’s built like a brick shithouse. Someone should tell the character designers that it’s okay if a male character doesn’t have arms the size of tree trunks.
May's thighs look thicker compared to her old design.
No kidding, she's an adult now.
I’m pretty sure you can sum up literally every character design in Strive with the statement “Character’s (X) looks thicker compared to their old design”
