if you google “vintage Liquitex watercolor,” you can see some photos of old tubes of Liquitex watercolor. I had no idea Liquitex ever made watercolor! How cool that you have gotten to try them!
The Lukas is oddly named; it's actually a Cobalt Green. It does look really nice. I bought this pigment from Qor and regret it deeply LOL. Genuine Terra Verte is actually PG 23, a very weakly tinting earth pigment that is useful for portraits.
You've done a great job of the swatching series, the pigment information has been very helpful. The brand comparisons have been an eye-opener. You have a great Zen-style voice (reminds me a bit of Ogmios in his School of Zen Motoring mini-series). White Nights Cadmium Yellow is intense - it looks almost opaque. I have the Ladoga version, which I think is essentially the same. I think both are from Evetskya Palitra St. Petersburg. I also have the Ladoga Blue Lake, it's a goegeous "brilliant blue", so I can forgive its fugitive reputation... I bought a White Nights chromium green recently, but I've found it to be almost completely opaque - is that normal? That Van Gogh Turquoise Green is wonderful to use in seascapes. The Cyan primary blue looked stunning. I have a QoR Manganese Blue which looks very similar. That Turner's Transparent Red Oxide is a juicy colour.
Ive actually haven't tried Turner watercolors but they are on my list next: i hear the mars violet and mars black are really amazing so I think ill start without those but that Manganese violet by Turner is beautiful. Lindsay the Frugal Crafter on RUclips has been painting with watercolor for almost 40 years, shes an amazing artist and she really likes Turner as well. Anyway great video! Thanks for sharing, much love!
I never get tired of watching someone else swatch paints. Thank you. Many of these dont look like theyre in your favorite color scheme, but i sure enjoyed you sharing them with us. Never say never. In a year or two you might have a desire to try something different. Im excited for you being able to try these different brands and give us your opinion on them.
That's a very nice lot of watercolor. My new favorite yellow is Holbein's IMIDAZOLONE LEMON. Hope you get to try it someday. I really like the Turner & Liquitex greens.
I was also thinking of a fugitive palette. I think I was interested in a couple of fugitive Shinhan paints so I thought if I ever find them then I should compile a fugitive Shinhan palette.
@@JayNathanWatercolor Oh, I hear you, brother! I’m toying with the idea of one day compiling a 19th century fugitive palette: Rose Madder Genuine Alizarin Crimson Gamboge Prussian Blue Hooker Green Genuine (Prussian Blue + Gamboge) Indigo Madder Brown Genuine (not sure if it is available) Aureolin (maybe?) Sap Green Genuine (definatly!) Still de Grain Dragon’s Blood And maybe round them off with some lightfast paints such as Cobalt Blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Cerulean.
Thank you! I really wanted to see a good swatch of Verone Green from Lukas Watercolors. I know some are opaque or have a chalky feel and I was wondering if it is the same with the verona green.
this video sparked quite the mystery with the liquitex paints! Haha. The PG26 looks way more interesting than the Rembrandt, I tried it recently and wasn't impressed. Expected it to at least granulate, but the color is weak too. The Maimeri looks really nice indeed, loved that flow. The Turner also look very nice
I really like that Manganese Violet! I can't find anything anywhere that says that Liquitex ever made (or now makes) watercolors. They don't mention it on their history page (I checked in case it was something they used to make but discontinued) and I have never personally seen any reference to it. No mention that it is a new or upcoming thing, either. I can find a lot of references to using their acrylic inks *like* watercolors, but no actual watercolor paints. I am really wondering what you got that is labeled Liquitex! (Mislabeled, counterfeit, something they are quietly beta testing in only one locale...??)
I couldn't find anything online mentioning them either. All I know is that they are pretty old. Late 80s/ early 90s. We're going to investigate and will let you know if we find anything.
Ok so another commenter managed to find evidence of Liquitex Watercolors by googling 'vintage Liquitex watercolor'. I posted the photo of a tube on my community page if you want to take a look.
I had no idea Liquitex made watercolor. I've read good things about Maimeri Blu but I've never tried it. I also haven't tried Turner. I can actually get a small selection of Grumbacher Academy and Van Gogh locally so I have a few tubes from when I was just starting out. I quickly moved on from those, but they were not bad to paint with. I mostly order from Blick's. Sometimes Amazon, but you never know what you are going to get from Amazon. Blick's at least has a clue. lol
I mostly use PO71 but PO73 mixes a muted purple with Ultramarine Blue. I have quite a lot of different brands... but QoR is still the most expensive in my collection. Funny enough... I love Qor watercolors but they cost a lot more than every other brand that is based in Europe. Anyway I'm fine with everything I can find. Liquitex was selling watercolors? I didnt know that.
@@JayNathanWatercolor They really are... Series 1 and 2 are the most affordable to get first. They have some earth colors that you would like, too. I think the Mars Orange Deep is basically the same as Light Red (PR101). But they flow more than other watercolors. If you prefer more control than these might be not the right for you. Dr. Oto Kano made a video about the full range. If you really like to get just a few than I recommend watching the video series that she made.
@@JayNathanWatercolor Thanks for your reply. I thought that might be the case. Swatches of PY184 from other brands that I’v seen in other videos seemed noticeably warmer than the Van Gogh version.
Agree with the other commenter, I don't think that's liquitex. I've never heard of liquitex watercolors. They're slow moving, so perhaps asian origin? Or handmade? Mislabeled?

What is that I spy...Van Gogh..Pyrrol Orange...My nemesis!!! We meet again! (Just kidding) interesting video ! Edit post swatch: I am convinced I gotten a dud..mine looks way milkier and more pink than the one you have swatched..but I still find it my foe!
Haha yes! I remembered you telling me how horrible it was and that I don't need to try it 🤣 Maybe yours did come from a bad batch? This one definitely isn't pinkish.
@@JayNathanWatercolor When you were talking about how you gotten mixed reviews my thoughts were :oh noo he remembers ..aaah! Come to think of,the turquise green I have is also a fail for me..mine is extremely ''gummy'' and pale in comparison to your swatch. I have sen plenty swatches of the same color and all seemed darker, and more vibrant than mine.
Hello, Jay. I am from Ukraine. Please, stop buying white night. My city is Kharkiv, 2nd largest city in Ukraine. It’s heavily bombed every day. Buying that stuff you give money for war.
I own a few Turners and I like them. I like the green gold in particular

Awesome job finding that!
They should try again and make something goauchey but moves like QOR.

There are some more fugitive colours in white nights such as violet rose PV2 and violet PV3.
Yes I've seen that they still have a few fugitive pigments. I wonder if they're as beautiful as the blue lake?

Thank you 🙏 It's an Escoda Perla size 10. There is a link in the description. ☺️
VG turq green is one of my favourites. still finding a good artist grade version of that. the rembrandt cobalt turq green is nothing like it.

White knights Blue Lake reminds me of Camlin's Ultramarine. Thier French ultramarine is also very beautiful.

Do you find Vang Gogh’s PY184 more green than other brands? I tried it once but I did not like it.
