As an African-American working in the Middle East I was always treated with respect. People treat you like your country demands they treat you

I am retired from the US Navy and have traveled the world during my military career. I have known and witnessed this type of treatment of African women not only in the Arab world but in many other countries as well. Many are brought in as prostitutes. These men in numerous countries lure these African women into their countries, by telling them they are going to make them a model so they can earn a lot of money. When they arrive, their passports are taken away and they have no way of getting back home. Over the years, I have spoken to many of these women, and the story is always the same slave labor/prostitution. These international pips control all these women money and have armed men constantly watching them to ensure they don't escape and leave the country. While deployed overseas during my career I offered to pay for two African women flight tickets home and was confronted by several hit men that made it clear if I interfere any further that something drastic would immediately happen to me. So I backed off. I spoke to senior military officials about the problem and was told to back off because they are not American citizens. Even though several years have passed, my heart still arches for these women, knowing what they have to endure on a daily basis. I also blame all the African countries that continue to look the other way in exchange for money for these women. Like I stated before, it is not just happening in the Middle East but also throughout Eurpoe as well. My heart goes out to these women and their families.

I am half Asian, half Arab. This is true. I am not at all proud to call myself an Arab when I hear something like this.
They buy their women to reel them in. But any woman in her God-given sound mind shouldn't ever become engaged in sny relationship with Arabs men. They are not worth any effort in a good relationship to any female.

Saudi Arabia treats their own women like second class citizens so I’m not surprised by the way they treat African women. Saudi Arabia has a number of human rights issues but they are swept under the rug, due to the country’s oil money.

Why is that our young people believe so much in being employees and don't think that they can be employers. The African education system needs to be completely overhauled. We shouldn't be travelling abroad for jobs we should be creating jobs and wealth for ourselves.

I met a good friend from Uganda when I was in the UAE and I did not like how she was treated. She would tell me the stories. I prayed for her alot and Praise God she left there in one piece. I stayed in touch with her, although we both left there and she is doing well last I heard from her. I believe she married an American man, I am so happy for her!

I lived in Dubai for a long time, I saw a little black girl in a headscarf in the boot of a car with bags of shopping and baby strollers , I was shocked and said to my companion . He replied “that’ll be the maid”.

I met a woman at the airport in Sharjah she was explaining her life as a maid in Saudi Arabia and she said it was horrible, not only did they confiscate her passport on return they subjected her to emotional abuse

Uhm, did she say contact between these Africans was limited, that she rarely saw anyone “like” her? Also, did she intimate there were acceptable living and working arrangements; before describing, murder, kidnapping, misogyny, possibly rape as likely. And, did she say multiple if not hundreds of Ugandan bodies being shipped back home in coffins due directly to dehumanizing behavior? All this for $200 a week max? This is a most convoluted interview, and she seems bereft, of basic logical competence…her body language and interview behavior does not align with what she is describing. I feel badly she appears to have normalized mistreatment!

This happens to Filipinos also. Loads of incidents of Filipinos and African domestic workers killing their employers for the same abuse. A few summers ago Filipino president forced all its citizens to return from Kuwait. Filipinos make up a large percentage of Kuwaits workforce the Kuwait government the caved in to the Philippine government demands for better protection for Filipino domestic workers.
Sometimes their employers would pay their workers late causing their domestic workers to go further in debt more vulnerable to and reliant on their employers. These domestic workers are very brave.
I have Filipino coworkers (nurses) who said they worked in Kuwait. They said they had to turn over their passports.

I am saudi, I don’t know how I came across this podcast but to start with, I’m really sorry for the bad experiences that happened to anyone who worked here. It’s a shame.
But I’d like to add a couple of notes on my side, we are a Saudi black family but my mum is basically a white Arab. We had a house keeper from Uganda her name is Juvi, she was the first in our house. I remember the first day she arrived she was upset since I met her at the office, and I asked her if she’s welling to work. She said I was supposed to work at an office (basically she didn’t know she is coming as a house keeper) and I can tell she had other bad experiences. The second she arrived to the house she was completely different, as we are a family of 9 and everyone was greeting her. We were mostly adults no kids, she had a day off and we took her everywhere we went on the weekends to have fun, she really did her job well, and had her free time when she’s done. We asked her to keep all her money and if she needed any thing private we will buy it for her. Honestly she was sooo happy and we were so happy with her and celebrated her birthdays for three years. And always gave her extra money as she was part of us. But she had to leave as she had a plan with her husband to move to Canada. We shared so much love and laughs together and she was in love with my mom she would defend my brothers agains the girls sometimes. We still mention her good. She had to leave back home.
- we asked her every time if she wanted to go out or do something she always prefers to go shopping or the beach with us I guess also cause she didn’t have friends and she preferred to spend time talking to her kids and family
- had her own room, toilet and tv and phone.
- keep in mind a lot of girls would run away and the family would be responsible front of the police and lose money.
- some really don’t want to work
- some just have very bad attitude
- some girls would be caught stealing serious heavy items, some would put nasty things in food , and purposely cause damage in the house or abuse kids by hitting and choking which are all caught in cameras

That is why I keep telling women from Africa and Western countries that they have to be careful when traveling to the Middle East. You have to understand the culture and its laws. It is best if you travel out there with a man (Husband, father, brother, boyfriend, etc.)

I do remember her saying one issue was not being Muslim, she also spoke of the economic disparity, and the disrespect in their speaking and expectations of the women. And I do recall her saying that they would even get physical. I can't recall her giving particular details, I can say she seemed very distressed while speaking. But, to me, what seemed to be her main issue of maltreatment, among others, was not being Muslim in a predominantly Muslim location.

I watched a documentary on this and its not only African women this happened to. I remembered the women from the Philippines were treated the same way. Their president stepped in and told the Saudi government that they will not allow their women to travel to their country. I think the president placed a band on women going their to work as domestic helpers. In that documentary their were african women from Kenya and Uganda. It brought me to tears as some returned on stretchers and some in caskets with no explanation of what happened. One of the African ladies who return said in the documentary that she tried stopping women from her village from going, but some ignored her.. How can another human treat another this way?

My sister worked for a family in Dubai, they were really nice to her. She and the family’s daughter would go out to do shopping. She even traveled with them. The family sponsored her VISA and business license and now she’s working as a hairdresser.

I have been to a few Arab countries and observed how the treat black people. I am from the United States and experience some of it. I was there for work purposes.
This was eye opening. Thank you for sharing. It sounds a little like how Black domestic workers lived in the South during segregation. Even though the women are paid (albeit very little), it also seems like the workers are taken advantage of by a good deal of these Saudi families who employed them. Seems very oppressive.
