  • Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians (PJO) is a show of substance over style. Its worldbuilding, character arcs, and mystery plot are all very well-written, and present multiple key advantages over its inspiration and rival in Harry Potter. Despite this, it’s somewhat lacking in moment-to-moment fun in the form of fight scenes, effects, tension, and humor. It’s a rare case of a modern franchise show with great writing and lackluster presentation rather than the other way around.

    12:37 Mystery
    14:40 Presentation

JK Rowling is a TERF. Although Harry Potter can still be enjoyed, I recommend not supporting her financially.

The Percy Jackson series is off to a good start. The only weakness was the lack of "show, don't tell", which is the golden rule of writing.

Good video, but when did Harry Potter fail as a movie?

It doesn't fail overall. All the Potter movies are at least pretty good. I just think many of them (particularly the first one) could have done a better job with characterization and mystery writing.

I watched Percy and it's not bad, but it has so many moments where they tell it instead of showing it that it has a bit of and ick factor for me

I agree, the show does this a little too much. Particularly with Annabeth: we don’t really get to see her act selfish and manipulative, it’s just told to us through dialogue.
I don’t think Percy himself has much of a tell-don’t-show problem though. We see a lot of his personal growth through dialogue scenes, but they’re dialogue scenes with a high stakes, they affect the plot, and he isn’t a character who needs to speak with a lot of subtlety.

I was just getting into too many new things around then. IIRC that’s when tabletop RPGs and PC gaming were taking over my life. (Although now that I think of it, a tabletop RPG campaign in the PJO universe could probably slap.)
I also remember feeling like Gaia and the giants didn’t quite live up to Luke and the titans as villains. Though I honestly don’t remember that much about them and might revisit it sometime!

Wait a minute at 10:13 did Percy pull out meth. I didn’t know Walter White was out there cooking in the Percy Jackson verse

you're comparing a series to a movie... Seriously....of course ther series will hv more depth than the movies that's y Percy Jackson was made into a series after the movies... isn't it... Better u compare when the potter series comes out

And the success of HP and wizarding world financially isn't hidden ....its one the most successful in terms of books, movie franchise with almost 10 billion USD ...n hv numerous theme parks around the world...
As a fan of both,...Percy Jackson has way more road to cover to even compete HP

Yeah, it's no coincidence that a series has better character development and a movie has better spectacle. Though I do think the respective books have those same strengths and weaknesses, albeit to a less pronounced degree.

I haven't watched the video yet but I've read the harry Potter books easily over 30 times and I'd say The Percy Jackson series at least 5 times. The Percy Jackson show is super lazy compared to the content of the first book and the harry potter series kind of glossed over some real content to fit more of the young love stuff in there. I hope the Harry Potter show isn't so lazy. Glad HBO is covering that.
