13 years later and this is still the best Bloody Mary video there is on RUclips. Props.
@lamonight - "Rolling" a Bloody Mary (pouring from one mixing tin to another, instead of shaking) is typically the accepted way of doing it. Folks say the issue is that if you shake it this will "break" the texture of the tomato juice, causing it to lose its slightly more viscous nature. Myself, I don't really notice much difference, and so I will normally shake it. But yes, in my book I refer to rolling it instead.
I am surprised the bartender doesn't know this...
I love that juicer! I agree with you about celery salt. It is hard to find in some countries so I buy celery seeds and make my own celery salt. Many old-time professional bartenders say that the Bloody Mary is not to be shaken but poured back and forth a few times between two cocktail mixer glasses.
Small Screen has received 7 nominations at this year's Taste Awards! Thank you for all your support!
My favorite cocktail ever. Drinking one now. Like mine with olive juice.
Me too, Angie...I found a place in Sonora California that makes the best around..Of course I haven't found a brunch place yet so I might be wrong..
You are supposed to use OLD BAY seasnoning... No that ancho chili stuff, plus it eliminates all the celery salt and such, becasue old bay has it all in it.
When you pack the glass full of ice you keep the drink colder for longer and when it´s colder the ice wont melt as fast. I hear loads of people complain because they think that they get less boose because it´s more ice but that is complete rubbish. The only thing that is less is the mixer. If some people seem to like to drink warm drinks that is a bit watery it´s up to them.
Try it with barbecue sauce, or lemon pepper, or Montreal steak spice, or dry vermouth(if you're making it with gin), or orange juice(sangrita-style), or onion powder. Dress it up with a piece of crispy bacon, a spear of asparagus, a pickle skewered to some onion, and a lemon wedge. I think it should be a drink that comes with a snack, and should be heavily garnished(a cool-weather answer to a fruit-filled sangria).
Robert,
I read in Dale DeGroffs book, "Craft of the Cocktail",
to roll this drink when mixing. Chris Mcmillan also rolls it. I noticed you shaking the drink. Gary Regan in joy of Moxology recommends shaking it. Does this change texture or do the air bubbles affect taste?
I prefer mine to be rolled...for me shaking it takes away from all of the other flavors....That's the proper way of drinking a Bloody Mary...MMMmmmmmmm.....so good
You are awesome Robert. Can't wait for you to maybe sit down at my bar so I can make you an Old Fashioned.
And I LOVE an Old Fashion. How do you make yours?. Just curious...I love watching RUclips and how they make Old Fashion's and Bloody Mary's
interesting addition of the chili powder. i don't know about shaking a bloody mary like that, it separates the tomato juice and dilutes it too fast.
You pronounce it "wooster" sauce...at least that's how the English say it. Nobody in England says the whole word but if you insist, it would sound like "woostersher" with the last "er" sounding almost like an "a". Hope that helps.
If anyone still watches this video, try with with sugo instead of juice, which is like tomato puree and throw it instead of shaking. Best variation I have ever had
And you recommend rolling it in your book! haha.
I found a hot sauce called Swamp Dragon that uses spirits instead of vinegar. They make four varieties with vodka, rum, bourbon, and tequila.
Can you use cheap vodka for this?
Harry's bar in Paris, the drink was called Red Snapper and it was Gin, Tomato juice and that is where the similarities end. Being curious and putting Gin in a bloody marry I found that this is totally nasty and unacceptable, but maybe I am biased.
Nice work i would have loved that drink with some early morning fried zuchinni and calamari and ranch dressing. But no celery ill take four green spanish olives. That my friend is an 11am saturday morning dream with a girl i just met 12 hours before that stayed the night at my house. Followed by a couple of extra dirty grey goose martinis 3 olives each. I couldnt think of any other way to finish off a perfect saturday morning. Back home for. 4 hour nap wake up watch 4 hours of tv shower up soak my face with ice water and out on saturday night and then sunday morning to do it all over again. That what many call crazy but what i call livin it up.
except the horseraddish that was prepared not the fresh kind but the flavor is less spicy
the english also usually speak with a non-rhotic accent, meaning they dont pronounce most of their r's. the actual poper way to say it is WUUS-tur-shur
Wusstahshah!
why do bartenders always pack the glass to the top with ice?
Use Tequila. I know you are all like WHAAAAATTTT, NO WAY!!!!! I think the spice of tequila makes a great variation to the drink.
thats called a bloody maria
Hey Bob, I find the chili powder iteration interesting; I will be giving that a whirl..
( Daves insanity sauce LOL )
BTW What is a guy names Harry doin' in Paris???
vodka
tomato juice
worchester
Sriracha oriental chili sauce
garlic powder
fresh ground 5 seed peppercorns
fresh ground fennel seed
porch sofa with good book
but who gives a shit what its called, its tasty stuff
Shaking or rolling is a huge difference..
most english almost sound like they say oyster, but the reason they dont say the last part is worcestershire is a county in england, and they drop the shire as slang, like americans would say rhode island instead of its proper name State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. so they really dont even say it right lol
I hear you aren't supposed to shake bloody mary's that hard ....just back and forth from one cup to the next..The ice breaks down and makes the gin or vodka not as tasteful.....Any one care to comment on that would be great
We definitely recommend rolling from one pint or mixing glass to the next until thoroughly mixed. That being said, if you want to shake, go for it!
Add some olives for me
shOcked by the amOUnt Of raw CHILI POwDEr. is it nOt vEry sPiCy?
No that chili is super mild. But I bet it's pretty gross. That's so much chili powder
its worcestershire sauve not wooster sauce, and its pronounced nothing like wooster either
Am I the only person who absolutely hates bloody mary's?
Probably.
Yes!....lol..
Pronounced :) " WuS - STir - SHY - A " ........ Sauce,,,,,,,,, ( Worcestershire sauce )
I call a martini with no olive juice naked and afraid. Cause thats what it is. Chilled rubbing alcohol with zero flavor. With my life i deserve far more that a flavorless drink thats almost 10$ each with no flavor. Ill drop a 20$ on every martini as long as its filthy with 3 or 4 olives.
video starts @ 1:10
that looks FUCKING DISCUSTING!
