Julius Cheeks is the greatest unsung hero of American music. His gorgeous baritone could produce the most terrifying shouts in all of gospel music. He was a friend and mentor of Sam Cooke. It is an injustice that he is not better remembered. God bless him

It pains me that Our Youth are unaware of this Raw Gospel Treaure that is time tested from above! I discovered this genre later in life but my young children absolutely love it...I wish there was more footage specifically of the Rev. Cheeks.

Had the great privilege of seeing him along with the Alabama Blind Boys at Boston Tech High School in the 1960's

I just recently got into the old time gospel music during the scamdemic...I have listened to alot and I really like the raw style of Rev. Cheeks although I can see the beauty of the many Saints who sang. My 2 yr. Old really lights up when she years these beautiful treasures aswell!

That's awesome. Your 2 year old has great taste. Rev. Cheeks 1950s recordings with the Sensational Nightingales on the Peacock label are the best representation of the powerhouse that he was. When he left the Gales in 1960 he formed The Knights and continued to record on Peacock but by that time vocal wear was starting to show. You can hear that wear in this video. Let me know if you need recommendations on other Legends of the genre that are essential listening. Thanks for watching.

@@Quartet4ever Thank You so much for taking the time to write me back.Prior to getting into the lords music I was into Soul for years.. First Motown then Stax/Atlantic...Fast forward to the Gospels I started with the 5 Blind Boys of Mississippi, then went to the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dixie Hummingbirds, Joe Ligon, The Consolers,Clara Ward Singers,The Evereadys, etc. etc. I was quite surprised to hear that little Richard even did beautiful Gospel songs...In these trying times I find that these Spirituals are like a soothing balm to my soul! But, so far there is just something about the Reverend Cheeks that is hard to beat! GOD BLESS

@@jackpalance9509 Sounds like you are enjoying your gospel journey. I agree with you on Rev. Cheeks. He was something else. The Sensational Nightingales "Song of Praise" LP on Peacock is the only full album with him at the helm but his 45s with the group are just as amazing and worth the search for them. E-bay is a great source for these recordings.
