Forget about the movie(s) it was bad...so bad
The anime is 100% better than the movie bro just go watch that
Derp I know right!!! Man I hate who ever made the movie. They should of watched the anime before creating the movie. Lol
Death Note?
@@Makarosc yess deathnote

Hi
Same
It sounds like Shinigamis are literally depression
Scorpio McClymont Right, listening to the description of the “symptoms” it sounded way too familiar
I think that Japan didn't have the God of Death who rules just human deaths. Maybe because there is no gods in Buddhism. Just another bad spirit trying to make humans want to die.
@@atsukorichards1675 they do have Izanami no mikoto though. She was ruler of the land of yomi and was said to steel the breath of a thousand mortals daily forcing her brother Izanagi no mikoto to give life to fifteen hundred daily after he went down to get her back but abandoned her upon seeing her rotting form.
Beowulfiow, yes, you are right. Then she does it from pure revenge for her husband, so our mortals' untimely deaths (at least some of them) are Izanagi's fault.
By the way, before Izanagi became the Queen of Yomi, I wonder who had ruled there.....
In Christianity, there are some demons that are associated with the symptoms of depression too.
This man's pronunciation is on point
Which is weird because he is usually hit or miss on most vids
The first story you talked about reminded me of the way most people with depression appear to others; alienating themselves, not being able to talk to people, always thinking about the bad things that have happened. Maybe Shinigami were a way for the Japanese to be able to understand depression. It seems like they personified the illness so it made more sense to them and made it feel like you can fight depression, even if you can't see it.
That is a very interesting way of viewing the shinigami.
Never let America do live action versions of anime & manga
I thought you died?
American Animated versions of anime are pretty good though
@@Makarosc yeah that's true but we always butcher live action versions of anime and a lot of other things we should just get japanese directors to do it cause we obviously can't
Unfortunately dragon ball was the first victim

Please for the love of god watch the live action Japanese movies or just the anime. The Netflix movie was horrible. Straight up horrible.
Daniel Mcleod or read the manga
Y'all can hate but I enjoyed the netflix movie and wished they made it longer with more hollows
I couldn't even finish it, it's really bad. Both manga and anime are great. The Japanese movie is okay.
No HOLLOWS were allowed in this video.

I'm looking forward to watching the film now...
The shaaaaaade
I thought it was okay but anime was much better
The Hollywood version... yes! Anime/Japanese ... cool/refreshing/awesome!
The netflix death note movie can burn in the deepest layer of hell.
Thank god for death note(and bleach) otherwise I would probably not know what the shinigami was.
Grey World Naruto for me. Reaper Death Seal was so cool and creepy
Soul Eater
Thank god for the internet
Yeah, The Bleach Anime / Manga Shinigami are totally different. More like loyal Servants to Orderly Death and Reincarnation.
Grudge Spirits are "Hollows" there. (Given their own dimension as well.)
And not even sure how the Hell of that Universe works, but I know it's just something you don't mess with.
@@allanbaker3958 Yep Hollows live in Hueco Mundo. Yeah, I don't think they've ever showed the true hell of their world, though one must exist.
This dude's got a beautiful accent and flawless pronounciacion. I am SHOOK.
Do more reviews on Asian based deities. It's a very uncommon mythology that's not being covered a lot. Awesome review. 😁
Yeah, I'd love to know the actual root of characters like the Hollow Ghosts depicted in Rumiko Takahashi's "Laughing Target" OVA.
most of it probably isn't that interesting
Yea like chinese

Agree, i would love to know about the Ainu deities.
"Shinigami have varying personalities"
*looks at Grell Suttcliff*
I see.....
Black butler is one of the best anime out there holy shit😭
YES
It actually makes a lot of sense to me that death wouldn't be a single being, but multiple with their own personalities. Unlike other gods of natural forces like the sun or tides that work pretty much like clockwork, Death is much more varied and less predictable. Sometimes it's peaceful and painless, sometimes it's violent and horrific, and sometimes it's just plain weird or mysterious. Hell, sometimes it just doesn't care even though you totally should have died that one time. So it makes sense that individual shinigami with their own personalities would be responsible for the varying deaths of people.
When I did my own research on them, I was surprised how little information existed even though you'd think death spirits would be more prominent in a country's mythology. Like you said, they remained rather vague for a long time. What's neat was that when Japan was introduced to the Western concept of Death (The entity), Japan started using Death's appearance for their shinigami, so what began as an undescribed or ghostly apparition slowly became a black-clad skeletal figure.
Thank you for doing another cultures mythology. Love it
There are other depictions of the Shinigami. Bleach has an entire society of them. And the main character of Rin-ne is a quarter Shinigami.
I'm surprised to see Death Note mentioned and not Bleach since the MC is a shinigami ( I'm a bit bias though )
Death Note is perfect for the idea of Shinigami
I agree 100% about Bleaahkkh..sorry, Bleach. It uses the word shimigami as a plot device and then proceeds to make the so-called shinigàmi into the most talkative characters I have ever encountered in manga. It's like yaka yak yak my sword yak yak yak yak take that yak yak yak yak yak yak blocked you yak yak yak...
@imma_dipshit _and_then how so?
@imma_dipshit _and_then I'm sorry to hear that but to each their own. I personally like the characterization of Shinigami from the Bleach franchise. Im bias af though so keep that in mind 😆.

I loved the shade thrown at the Netflix Death Note movie. It was wonderful!
And this video was great!
I’ve already watched The anime, the Japanese Drama, the movie, and I read the manga. It’s all amazing I love all the characters.
There's a Mexican movie about that cave with candles! And the same thing happened, the guy drop or blew accidentally on the flame and "death" or Shinigami, told him that he have to take his soul or the like.
i don't really remember the rest of the movie, it was a really old one, thou.
You explain myths really well. Kudos to you!
6:16 You saw the *awful* Netflix movie and not the Anime? Sinnnneeeerrrr!!!!!
Calm down, he did say it was a bad movie.
If Bad movies are what you enjoy :D that was great
Lol real shit
“If bad movies are what you enjoy”
That’s hella shade😂
Also, once a human uses a Death Note, they are banned from the Afterlife. So my advice, don't ever use a Death Note. Or maybe you can just bribe a Shinigami like Ryuk with apples in hopes of making him write down the name of the person you hate the most in his Death Note without doing it yourself. That's what I'd do.
Actually, there is no after life in the Death Note universe. In the last episode, the rules were as follows:
1. All humans will, without exception, eventually die.
2. After they die, the place they go is MU (nothingness)
I am but a simple otaku. I see Ryuk, I click
"Death Note explained" lolz
" or even check out the Netflix movie if bad movies is something you enjoy" lol
Boy brother... You're right about that. Lol
Stick with the anime or at least the live-action Japanese version.
Thanks for doing this one! This channel is awesome!
Only good thing about the Netflix movie is casting Wilem Dafoe as Ryuk
Who's seen bleach or death note
shinigami are actually the soul reapers
I watch them both
Never heard of death notes.
Now I'm intrigued, I want to read it .
Thank you
Death note is a great anime series, and later a horrible live action movie that Netflix has made. The anime series well keep you on the edge of your seat. A death Note is a notebook that is also the ultimate, out of this world killing tool. The killer needs only the name and appearance and regardless of where they are, when the killer puts their name in the notebook called a death note that person well die.
If you've only watched the live action deathnote I beg you to watch the original anime series the live action one is shit
I've only read the manga; I'm uninterested in the live action, Deathnote doesn't seem like it would translate well in live action.
Maxwell Seltzer it doesn't. The only good part of the live action was Dafoe's voice.
@@Lemme-sniff-ya I felt the same about the Netflix Evangelion release so I just read the manga instead, if though it came out after the show and is set in the universe after it restarts.
Death note and Showa Genroku Rakugo make an appearance my inner otaku is tickled.
The story about the man with the spell to banish shimigami is very similar to one of the Grimms Fairy Tales called God father death, except the spell has been replaced by an herbal salve. Its funny how stories such as these have variations all across the globe. Love these videos!
Could you see if you can do the Seven deadly sins, Seven seals of apocalypse, and Seven Archangels. If that is alright with you?
Ky Kiske Yes it does. It even is shown in Kingdom Hearts as well. Only for the seven Guardians. And the number seven has been shown in the Chakras, and also the flower of life.
Most def seven archangels
Moses Messiah yeah. Apparently there are two archangel in the day of Friday.
Maybe do more of the Chinese deities, I’ll be REALLY interested in it, and I wouldn’t mind helping out in some ideas/research~
Lee Jia Wei yes.
Lee Jia Wei yea
Chinese dynasties and major figures
Lee Jia Wei Yes, more Chinese Mythology, along with Japanese and Korean Mythology, to see the how close they are to the Chinese and where they are unique to the culture.
I agree

It took me a while to realise that Shinigami is also something in Black Butler. The word was so familiar when I saw your video haha.
Shiori Nakamoto
Is Black Butler good?
Krishnavamsi yes
But not Death Note?
You should check out the Manga and anime bleach. It's about shinigami, or soul reapers who watch over the world from evil spirits. It gets a lot more in depth than that it's just a general overview of it.
We all came here because of one thing, and it’s name starts with “D”.
Death gods are so fascinating and terrifying at the same time.
Please watch the real death note. The Netflix one is horrible and not what death note is really like.
I hate that “live action death note” makes everyone think of Netflix. Original Japanese live action death note was actually pretty decent.
Love the content btw
You should cover the death gods of xibalba I think there either Aztec or Mayan mythology and there’s 9 different underworlds and there’s a god for each one I think 🤔.....
I know of Mictlan, just not very well. ha ha. I have a family friend who's son is named Mictlan
Can you talk about the greek goddess hegemone one day? Am trying to learn more about her I would really appreciate you doing so. I think your videos really help me understand meaning to things.
Funny thinks that I knew this from anime call death note

Shinigami can translate to 4(shi)2(ni)3(mi) in gorowase (sorry for any misspelling )
Thanks for doing more Japanese mythology!
I kinda love how these spirits are essentially the Japanese way of making sense of things like depression and anxiety. If you know anything of what that’s like it dealing with those issues, that’s exactly what it sounds like the shinigami were meant to cause
I became interested in shinigamis after watching death note *anime version
I think this is an interesting example of how folk lore and tales evolve with society. The new Deathnote Shinigami has superseded and replaced the original.
Death Note was amazing 😁 Arent Grim Reapers supposed to take whatever form the person doing the dying pictures it to look like? I've heard weird theories lol.
Don't say it...don't say it...
*GETSUGA TENSHOOOO!!!*
No matter how scarry something can appear you dont know who or what they are till you u actually investigate them.
The Netflix movie of Deathnote Retcons so much it changes everything. If you liked that you NEED to watch the Anime/Manga.
Especially if you watch it cause Shinigami lore, they change alot of that and make it less "real" to the lore.
Great job with another nice video. And an eastern asian myth too ♡
It's so interesting to compare all the different myths that revolve around the same universal concepts (death, birth, sickness, attachments...).
It's also fun to contemplate how the changes in myths throughout history reflect the society. I wonder if the whole aspect of the shinigami beckoning one to death was a way for people to rationalize something like depression. If so, I wonder how much doing so affected its treatment in society today.
For those of us in the west and even for those of us that watch anime. Japanese Mythology is always something that is very interesting and sometimes even more so then Western Mythos. Simply because we grow up learning about the Greeks, Romans, Norse, and Even Egyptian Mythos due to it being more relevant to western cultures. I guess that can be why, for my self, I got into anime and learning about Japanese and other Eastern Cultures as much as I have because they are so vastly different from what I’ve learned growing up.
It’s a simple wondering of how other cultures came about and how they acted due to their own stories. I’m glad that my parents raised me to be to open mines and to explore and learn as much as I can about different cultures as it’s obvious that the cultures here in the U.S. are quickly deteriorating and a large amount have become very small minded and closed off to the rest of the world. Only ensuring their own destruction by refusing to adapt to the ever changing environment of technology and societal needs of the people within their own nation and world as a whole.
ill take a shinigami...
and make a video on it!
These really give a good deep look into the psyche of people near death. I like it.
Me:sees shinigami writing in death note
Shinigami:ever heard of death note?
Me:I BAPTISE YOU IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT AMEN
Shinigami:Kira he's trying to bless meeeee!
Kira:* Pulls out gun* What you doin to him hol up how you seeing him, aight what's ya name I'm writing in the behaviour book.
Me:Do I look stupid to you boi!
Kira:*Writes his name down*
Me:well sh-*blows up*
Don't argue with Kira ok :)
The Death Note movie on Netlfix doesnt count. Go watch the anime for an even better depiction of them. The anime even goes to the shinigami realm and shows a whole host of them
YEAH another person, Saying THE NETFLIX MOVIE SUCKS!!!!!
the Animé is amazing!!!!! If you must watch a Movie Adaptation,
Watch the Older Live Action Trilogy from 2006. Still not as good as the Animé IMO but way better than Netflix version!!!!
Death and Life “two sides of the same coin” KAPPA!^^
I like Japanese myths and legends. If you can, do a video on Kitsune (trickster fox spirits). Also shinigami also appear in Bleach
Interesting, my admittedly limited understanding of the Shinigami, was that they were like Charon the greek ferryman of the dead, so very cool to here these other stories :)
Shinigami was rarely mentioned in Japanese mythology prior to their exposure to Western culture, where Japan was influenced by the concept of the "grim reaper."
i love how your playing minecraft in the back
Why dont you make a video about indian god of death (yamraj)...it will be fun to know about him cause as an indian we dont know much about him .😊
I like how you pronounce the japanese names fluently
So fascinating! The idea of suicide being a seperate topic for death is also a interesting point.
I learned about Shinigami in an anime called death note..
Could you do a video about the Japanese underworld, and Izanami.
This comment WILL be liked
as you will it, so it shall be
Thanks for making a video thats related to Death Note
2:45 it sounds just like depression
The candle story reminds me if Djinns. Ive seen the Death Note movie but I like the anime way more better.
I’m in the comments and all I see is anime memes, have some more respect for the culture itself and gain the knowledge of its mythology
You have to be possessed by a shining smile to watch the Netflix adaptation of Death Note
I'm a fan of the Bleach anime and manga.
I learned about shinagami firstly in The death note.....
first anime/manga i heart about Shinigami was from Gundam Wing with Duo Maxwell. I was expecting to hear about Bleach also.
You do Japanese mythology too!!? So glad I subbed a week ago
Yep it's something I'd like to start doing more of for sure.
Mythology & Fiction Explained Please do as it expands your content to a variety any and everyone can get into... Keep up the good work bro because you ARE AWESOME!! Oh and can I make a special request for just one mythological figure..? Please!? I would like for you make a video about "Papa Legba."
I just discovered this channel and immediately fell in love with it.
Bleach is the good example for shinigami i would say
I always like how many different depictions of Shinigami there are. Animws and the way they are depicted in Japanese stories and lores
They made a movie about him it's call death note
When u get to 3:19 of this video the picture reminds me of the Soul Reaper from the Animed Series called Bleach. A person dressed in black holding a Samurai Sword.
Your introduction to Death Note was the Netflix adaptation? Yikes you really got robbed of an experience and had it replaced with a slap with a rotting fish
The history of the shinigami is very interesting. Starting from a way to just explain death, to a way to explain depression, and now they are almost like angels (both heavenly and fallen alike).
Izanami izanagi

I LOVE that you explain mythologies that are often overlooked by western culture. Can’t wait to see more underrated mythologies explained! I’d love to see Native American,
Hindi, Mayan and Aztec, Voodoo, Slavic, and African(besides those of Ancient Egypt; myths from, say, the Ibo, Yoruba, and Ashanti people) content as well!
The only thing good about the Death Note movie was Ryuks character
guess where i got to know about it.....hint is 🍎
Netflix's Death Note? Ugh....disgusting!
I learned this god from this anime called "Death Note"
It's not one god but many spirits, but yeah I learned of them from Bleach.
Hold on... the story you told is almost a exact copy off a Grimm story I know. Which one came first?
The movie isn’t that bad as long as you don’t try and compare it to the anime
Tho the anime is 100% more enjoyable
I find it fascinating how unlike other monsters or gods of legends Death was order and absolute while to a Shinigami it’s a game “Roll the dice, pay the price”
I came here after binging Death-note
