Somoskő Castle, located in northern Hungary near the Slovakian border, is a beautiful medieval fortress steeped in Hungarian history. Perched atop a basalt hill, the castle offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes and neighboring castles. Its rich history traces back to the 13th century, during Hungary's Árpád dynasty, when it was first constructed as a defense against invasions.
The castle was likely built between 1260 and 1300 by the Kacsics family, a noble Hungarian clan. Like many medieval castles in the region, it was fortified in response to the Mongol invasions of 1241-42, which devastated Hungary and highlighted the need for stronger defensive structures. Originally constructed in a simple Romanesque style, Somoskő Castle was later modified and expanded over the centuries.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, Somoskő played a role in the intense conflicts between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. In 1554, the castle fell into the hands of the Ottoman Turks and remained under Turkish control for more than 40 years, serving as a strategic outpost in the long war between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs.
By the 17th century, the castle’s importance as a military outpost declined, and it began to fall into disrepair. The site suffered significant damage from attacks and natural decay. Ownership shifted among various noble families, including the Forgách and Balassa families, before it was ultimately abandoned as a residence.
What makes Somoskő Castle unique is its proximity to the Slovakian border, resulting in its grounds being split between Hungary and Slovakia today. The castle grounds are now partially located on Slovakian soil, but it is easily accessible from both countries, making it a symbol of shared heritage.
Today, Somoskő Castle is a popular tourist attraction, celebrated not only for its panoramic views and historical significance but also for its distinctive basalt formations, including a unique hexagonal "stone waterfall" near the castle base. Efforts to preserve its ruins have helped maintain its allure, and visitors can explore the site while imagining its medieval past.
