  • An Australian teenager and a British woman have died after drinking tainted alcohol in Laos in what Australia’s prime minister on Thursday said was every parent’s nightmare. An American and two Danish tourists also died, officials said, following reports that several people had been sickened in a Laotian town popular with backpackers. Dr. Knut Erik Hovda, Professor & Senior Consultant of Oslo University Hospital, joined LiveNOW from FOX to discuss.

I'm not sure what this expert is an expert of. Methanol is a byproduct of distilling ethanol. This is cheaply (and incorrectly) homemade alcohol and isn't a case of methanol being added to drinks. When travelling, buy brand-name drinks and you should be fine. In Thailand, these things do not exist because the government and the Ministry of Public Health strictly control them. Anyone who does this is breaking the law and faces the death penalty. However, in underdeveloped countries like Burma, Laos, and Cambodia, they can do this because the communist governments are not strict about these things.
In Laos, there is a lot of illegal liquor that does not meet international standards because the villagers brew and drink it themselves. Therefore, drinking illegal liquor can be dangerous and even fatal. You have to be careful because it is not up to international standards and has not been certified by the Lao Ministry of Health. The Lao government does not conduct any research or issue the highest penalty as same as another country, they would strictly prohibit production because it lacks standards. And another thing, if there is anything bad about this country, the Lao communist government will forbid all media in Laos from reporting the news. If anyone reports the news, that person will be arrested and killed, or imprisoned until they are forgotten. And ordinary Lao people are also prohibited from criticizing their own government or making positive comments about things. But Lao people can criticize people from other countries.

Note'' yes you can get arrested and even killed if you criticise on government and political topics on social media or international stages. So what is the country of Laos and its government going to do about this. Laos is a poor country and will not compensate for any life lost for sure - particularly if it is a tourist as there is no firm regulations.
Guys if you wanna go to Southeast Asia just stay in Singapore, Thailand & Malaysia, or even Brunei -first, particular if it is your first visit to the region.
These four countries infrastructure’s wise = is adequate in hospitals & healthcare, accommodation & transportation accessibility as well as in having a very decent safety net on tourism aspects.
Once you are more accustomed to the region then try Vietnam,Philippines, Indonesia route. The second group may not be as safe as the first four mentioned in term of health and hygiene on the street, tourism safety control or food & drink standards = but it is sure a lot safer than Laos, Cambodia or Myanmar 💯%
In fact = just count out Laos,Cambodia or Myanmar altogether because it is not worth your life safety if any thing bad were to happened.
This third group category has no conventional prosecuting laws on misconduct that covered their small business in running on behalf of the nation like the Malay, Thai or Singapore and payout compensation for any accidental death from common failure checked points-particularly on things like illegal home made alcohol consumption control is nonexistent.
Give them 10 more years at least if you wanna safe good acceptable holidays experiences that covered unforeseen circumstances as a tourist.
The commu system have no care for loss of tourists life whether it’s under their government running system in guidelines & standard or under the public sector. Therefore ~the tourists welfare safety net available is unfortunately coming from just under the holiday insurance policy taken out before traveling only.
The five life lost will not get any apology corespondents from Laos officials nor gain any financial compensation from any Laos involved = fact. Safe guarding in Lao is pretty much lacking in all safety protocols and for tourist making a journey-we can only wish them good luck and be safe.
Backpacker holidays may sound exciting for many youngster venting out into the new culture & sighting into what the world has to offer. Though, the basic rules + legal regulations on that specific visiting country must be fully made aware of + with good back up precautions on what is needed in knowledge & actions well before stepping into their territory. Condolences to all the family loosing their loved ones to unsafe alcohol in Lao.

The patients transfer to Thai hospital because Laos have not potential to cure them. Get it.?

Those tourists drank alcohol mixed with methanol in Laos, drank it in Laos, and I repeat, drank it in Laos, not in Thailand. The Lao hospital could not treat them, they sent them to the Thai hospital for treatment. Thailand treated them. Why do Thailand have to be criticized when we did nothing wrong?

00:44 I do love your reporting but I didn't think we'd need "a leading expert" to tell us that drinking methanol harms and kills. I'd have believed you! straight up! But this guy wowed me. I learned a lot. And who would have thought regular ethanol alcohol to be a great antidote for anything except maybe in an old Bonanza episode. I used to love that ~ both the show and its primary use of a-swig-for-a-bullet antidotal therapy.
