Some brands were deemed not fit for human consumption by the WHO, it was alleged. Some labels have made numbers of locals go blind, they said. I was fine on the sangthip whisky or singha beer though.

I could have died on the street if not for my GF. No more for me. I'm staying safe and warm in the USA from now on. Not worth it.

This can be from poor distillation or deliberate cost cutting. Hopefully international pressure will help the investigation to find out when these drinks were contaminated or adultered.

methanol is a by-product of distilling ethanol (the "safe" alcohol). The first few volumes of the distilled alcohol contain mostly methanol and need to be disposed of. This is why it is illegal in a lot of places to distill your own alcohol. Because people arent careful enough or dont know how to rid the product of the methanol. Incidentally, one of the treatments for methanol poisoning is to give someone a lot of ethanol (basically get them super drunk). This counteracts the toxicity of methanol which causes blindness and nerve damage. It is very sad and preventable to lose these beautiful young people to such a careless event, but more than likely it was not done intentionally or maliciously, and my guess is the owner of that hostel got his hands on some liquor he thought was a great deal but it turned out to be poison.
As south east asian.. I strongly advice foreigner to not try bootleg drink here.. we are not that smart to think about safety, It is common for people to die from botleg drink here, they even mixed alcohol with mosquito repellent

Crazy world. I stayed in Nana's hostel a couple years ago. They offered a happy hour of free alcohol. I travelled all across Asia and that was the worst tasting alcohol i had by far... Wouldn't surprise me if home brewed
I got done by dodgy booze in thailand. Ruined my trachea gave me gerd and mouth infection could barely sip water for 5 days. Spoilt my whole trip barely had energy to get home. My vision was also messed up for a couple months as well.
i had a similar experience in Vietnam. Bars pushing spirits onto you which were cheap to them, when you wanted beer. A wierd headache afterwards suggesting it was not as per label, or proper alcohol fit for consumption. I had similar in central Spain

It’s one of the poorest countries in Asia. And its population is small. So the hospitals there are not good enough for treating these people with international standards and probably their insurances don’t cover.
When making hooch and distilling it, you have to do it carefully and separate off the methanol fraction from the ethanol. It's likely what happened here, it wasn't done properly and was contaminated, not deliberate. If you look on Google, lots of previous stories like this. As, for transferring them to Thai hospitals - Thailand has better healthcare than Laos.

This was not intentional. Methanol is also a normal product of the distillation process that produces ethanol, and in home-brew distilleries without strict controls - often found in poorer countries - it can end up in the mix.

It's all common practice in Loa and Thailand to sell moonshine almost pure alcohol then mixed and bottled as popular brand name spirits . But this time they didn't separate the methanol which starts at the very start of the moonshine run so they just mixed it in.

For Americans; 30 ml = 1 oz. and 25 ml = .85 oz To put that in comparison to what we're used to when you got a bar here the standard pour is 1.5 oz - 2 oz.(45 ml - 60 ml). Methanol ain't no joke and it seems like the bars serving alcohol was cutting it with unregulated hooch made in somebody's house.

In Issan I had moonshine dozens of times. Never got very sick but the hangover is harder. I guess because they cannot go to Laos and film freely??

I'm Thai, but Beer Laos surpasses all mainstream Thai beers. So, when you're in Laos, simply drink Beer Laos - it's the best choice there.

This has been happening occasionally for years. On one occasion it was Russian illegal alcohol being brewed and sold at holiday destinations. Not necessarily SE Asia.

For Americans; 30 ml = 1 oz. and 25 ml = .85 oz To put that in comparison to what we're used to when you got a bar here the standard pour is 1.5 oz - 2 oz.(45 ml - 60 ml). Methanol ain't no joke and it seems like the bars serving alcohol was cutting it with unregulated hooch made in somebody's house.

methanol is used chiefly for rendering industrial ethyl alcohol unfit to drink so it can be sold in supermarkets cheaply as methylated spirits without government alcohol taxes .
There are non toxic ways of doing this but methanol was chosen due to its lethality to send a warning to people during prohibition
