    A neighbour put down artificial turf & the weeds grew through it. It looks terrible. Make sure you put good weed membrane beneath 🤩

    Have battled with ground elder for years! No matter how deep you dig some roots will escape & regrow. Currently using a really strong weed membrane & a deep bark chip mulch. You could place some nice containers on top & change contents with the seasons.

      I get the feeling the battle with ground elder is never going to go away.👍🌱👍
      That could be a good option for that part of the garden. I've popped some membrane and gravel down in another part of the garden then put post on top. That seems to have kept the ground elder at bay in that area but now have creeping buttercup there instead 😂

    Get a packet of woodland wildflower seed and sow it into modules. When they are a good size, hoe off all the ground elder and pack the ground with your wildflower plugs. Then just let the plants fight it out. Go round and pull off the biggest ground elder shoots every now and again before they get too enormous.

    • @marksallotmentplot
      @marksallotmentplot  3 месяца назад

      Great suggestion. Wildflowers were one of the things I was thinking about putting in that space.
      The ground elder seems to be a constant battle. If I miss a bit for a couple of weeks it goes completely wild👍🌱👍

    Apparently weeds can still grow through artificial turf. I'd think long and hard before going that route.

    Little bit of artificial grass won't hurt Mark, considering everything else you do to balance it out! We have some artificial turf in the back garden for the kids, and the neighbours think I'm crazy cos I use an old hoover to vacuum it to keep it tidy! 😂 I think environmentally it's more than balanced out by the allotment and container growing, and recycling and repurposing that we do!

    • @marksallotmentplot
      @marksallotmentplot  3 месяца назад +1

      That was kind of my thinking.
      Everything in balance 😊
      I'd put rather pop some artificial turf down in that space to make it both useable and manageable rather that just being a patch of mud covered in weeds. 👍🌱👍

    Great video. I have a tiny garden and after years of struggling with a weed filled lawn that got uneven light etc, I went for artificial grass, it was an offcut from a company who lay artificial grass. Anyway, we did a good base: wooden frame, membrane and plenty of compacted sand and it has been down for over 15 years, I get barely any weeds through it, perfect for small tricky areas. 😊

    • @marksallotmentplot
      @marksallotmentplot  3 месяца назад

      Sounds like you've had a good experience with the artificial turf.
      It gets a bit of a bad rep in some places but there's deffo a use for it in places.
      I'd much rather make that's patch of garden useable than a waste of space 👍🌱👍

    I feel your pain with the ground elder. I was going to try and eat all the young shoots and keep on top of them last year, but there are just too many😥 Re. the artificial grass...we're all ruining the environment in our different ways, so that's not a biggie. Another nice video👍

      The ground elder is a constant fight, never really feel as if I'm on top of it.👍🌱👍
      Speaking of which that's another thing to add to the list of jobs to do this afternoon 😂

    Hello Mark, I used a soldering iron/gun to cut and seal my weed fabric (no open flame)

      That's a great idea Derek, I'd never thought of using a soldering iron.
      Will have to give that a go 👍🌱👍

    We have bindweed at our allotment, we can never get rid of it, despite covering patches for 2 years, digging out every little bit we see, nightmare 😂. Jo Devon 🙂

      There's one little corner bit that gets a bit wet sometimes if we have a lot of rain and thought that would be the perfect spot 👍🌱👍

      Thanks 😊. The garden is slowly taking shape. Still need to come up with a few ideas to sort out the bottom bit but that'll come with time 👍🌱👍

    Wow! I watched part one a while ago and the difference with the cleaned up slabs is amazing. I genuinely thought you had alid some new ones and got rid of the old one. Pressure washings are amazing things!
    I understand your reasons for artificial grass - the stuff makes me shudder to be honest, the environmental impact aside (which is negative) - your leaves from your tree could still be an issue even landing on plastic grass. My friend's daughter inherited an artificial lawn and she hates it. It is really hard to keep it looking nice with the trees around - she finds the blossom and leaves from a huge neighboring cherry tree next door, get buried in the lawn and then rots to a mulch. Sweeping doesn't help as you say when it gets wet it is just hard to remove. Then bits come up with the leaves and they don't want to then put the leaves etc in their green waste bin because of the bits of micro plastic. Her fiance has even bought a Henry hoover specially to hoover the lawn not very successfully 😂!!

      Aww thanks Dawn.
      I don't get a lot of time to work on the garden between the allotment, work and family life.
      Hoping to chip away at it slowly but surely over the next few months to make it into a much nicer space.👍🌱👍

    I HATE GROUND ELDER 😡 I grow in containers & raised beds because of it 🧑‍🌾the only way I have found to deal with it is to cover and at least 6" of gravel 🪨 We recently levelled grass with soil and grass seeds, and the dam stuff sprung up from neighbours garden😮 loving seeing your kitchen garden develop, more please🤗👌

      With you on the ground elder!!!!
      I've already gone down the route of covering part of one bed with weed membrane and gravel then pots on top.
      I try to pull it out as soon as I see it but never seem to fully get on top of it. Think this fight is with me for a long time 👍🌱👍

      I try to pull the young shoots out as soon as I see them but if I miss them for a week or two it gets out of control. Think this fight is going to be with me for me for a while yet 👍🌱👍

    Good work. Can I ask - did the pressure washer on the slabs remove the moss or did you use something else?
    Thanks.

      Thanks!
      Gave the slabs a quick covering with Pro Clean before using the pressure washer. First time trying it.
      Seemed to work well, it got rid of a lot of the moss etc.. which helped a lot.
