- This Canadian Produced HBO Special first debuted on HBO in December 1981. Also aired in December 1982.
Freddie the Freeloader sets out to have Xmas dinner in a very expensive New York restaurant with his good friend, the Professor. Along the way he stops in a hospital to entertain some children on Xmas. Red Skelton does a couple of songs on his own & a duet with Vincent Price.
I remember watching red skeleton when I was a kid i love watching his shows
This is one of my earliest childhood memories. I was 5 years old. My parents had just finished their evening jobs as janitors and we were in the car driving home. They got me hyped up to see the Red "Skeleton" show. I had no clue who they were talking about and was picturing someone like Red Skull from the Spiderman universe. It is funny the little things we remember. I can still remember what that moment felt like and can still see the city lights passing by on that cold December evening in the back seat of that car. I don't remember watching the special, but only them getting me hyped to watch it.
Pure joy! I loved watching heartwarming shows like this on a stormy winter night all cozy anf warm on the sofa with warm blankets, seeing the raging storm outside through the living room window. To have those times back again.
I always love red Skelton I saw him yrs ago at the ks state Fair I miss Hime so much

I always enjoy watching this special during the Christmas season. I guess because I grew up with Red on t.v. every week. God bless his memory.
Man, HBO ROCKED during Christmastime in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. We had “Freddie the Freeloader’s Christmas Dinner”, “Rich Little’s Christmas Carol”, “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas”, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, etc., etc. I also remember a live performance of “Snow White” that was exclusive to HBO. HBO would also show “March of the Wooden Soldiers” (Laurel & Hardy) during Christmastime. I remember first seeing “A Christmas Story” on HBO in the mid-1980’s.

I remember all that too! Any time Freddie’s Christmas Dinner, Rich Littles Christmas Carol etc came on, I was sure to watch it! Wow....times sure were great back then, weren’t they?
Agree 100%. What wonderful times it was in the '80s and to be a kid at Christmas and that opening flying HBO for that was the coolest right up there with Rubik's cube and VCR lol.Emmet otter I forgot all about him that was really cool early Jim Henson right. See now you got me thinking about HBO one of my favorites was fraggle Rock 😁

I always did love Red Skelton (Freddie The Freeloader). I could not wait to see his performance either on television, or in performance shows.
This was the first time I'd seen or even heard of Mr. Skelton. I've been a fan ever since.
Wow!! Classic indeed!! Love-it.
These were the best days when his show was on....all my family members watched him. He was truly the King of comedy. Him and jerry lewis were the best there ever was.

I recall watching Red at my grandparents. Some of the only "non Christian" VHS they had. I still have a box set of Red Skelton on VHS. It was a different world then.

Incredible Memories, This, Rich Littles Christmas Carol and Emmet Otters Jug Band Christmas were the Big Three in the Late '70s early '80s. This might sound phony but, I couldnt thank you more for the Good Feeling I just felt stumbling across this and Rich Little's.I also remember HBO showing The Christmas That Almost Wasnt.. Thanks again and have a Great Christmas and New Year with your Family.. I cant believe how happy this made me alost like im 10 yrs old again writting my Christmas List.
This was my favorite show as a kid. It is only available on VHS. I bought mine used a few years ago on Amazon for like $4

I remember watching this on Home Box Office along with Rich Little's A Christmas Carol. I thought this was gone for ever. I was able to buy Rich little's special on DVD. Brings back pleasant memories, thanks for posting!
My family had an old VHS filled with Christmas specials from the 80s that we recorded off the TV. We watched it every year in December. It didn't feel like Christmas unless we watched it. Unfortunately, some years ago, that VHS was recorded over and we lost all of them. I've slowly been finding them back on DVD (but it's just not the same without those commercials!)

Where can I buy this dvd, this timeless classic was supposed to be archived, never to be seen again after its 82 airing. No price is to great for a masterpiece of this quality!!! ESPECIALLY on DVD!!!!
