Recorded in 1964 and was the last big chorus, romantic version of Messiah recorded. All the rest after this were Baroque recordings with smaller choruses and orchestras and faster tempi.
Magnificent. A choral trilogy. "Whorty is the Lamb", a majestic prelude, "Blessing and honor", a triumphant fugue and "Amen", a sublime fugue ... the subject is divided, subdivided, inverted, enriched with counter-subjects and subordinated to many ingenious and latent purposes of harmony, melody and imitation. Sublime Händel
Great performance! When the sopranos go down from that G, they bring Jesus down to Earth for me every time! God bless you, Maestro, and God bless the entire choir and the orchestra!
+Reverend Doctor Victoria Allen Howard -- and all these years I thought i was alone in this thought...Amen...same in the song "I know my redeemer liveth towards the end.
Thanks for this post. Klemperer,s Messiah performance would be considered old fashioned today but Handel himself would have loved it. These so called authentic performances with very small orchestras and choruses are a fallacy, many classical period composers would have and indeed did use large forces when they were available to them, especially Handel.
....whatever OK undertook, a masterpiece turned out. Reference recordings for eternity with Opera voices not existing today in this quantity and quality. All Klemperer-Tempi are still and will continue to be valid and correct for generations to come. Mi piace moltissimo
Magnificent. The *only* fault for me is 6:33 - 6:43 where, in my view, a rallentando should begin to take hold. Those high 'As' from the sopranos need to float. It's such a big romantic sound, it needs to be a be a little indulgent at that point, and set us up for the very last Amen.
Actually, it's and A for the sopranos when the heavens completely open up. It's my favorite in A in the whole choral repertoire. To think he wrote the entire Messiah in six weeks. Oh my.
This was, indeed, recorded in 1964 for EMI/Angel. The four soloists for this recording were Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Grace Hoffman, Nicolai Gedda, and Jerome Hines. This was, I think, the last Klemperer/Philharmonia recording produced by Walter Legge - before he announced the disbanding of the Philharmonia without even telling Klemperer first. (Klemperer had Legge barred from the recording sessions for DIE ZAUBERFLOTE later that year.)
Revelation 5 12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 12. 13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 13.
This stereo record was issued in the mid- 1960s. Handel - Choruses from Messiah. His Master's Voice ASDM 2288. Judging by the dust- jacket photo of Klemperer it had been recorded about that time (I have this in my collection). A superb example of "Big Messiah" which I regret has gone out of fashion somewhat, due to the fad for recreating "in period style". Though music like this transcends just about any style of interpretation don't you think?
Amen Amen, Jesus Christ, the lamb, has overcome, has been slain and has redeemed us to God by his blood. Outside the citygates of Jerusalem suffering for us, being made sin and risen on the third day, ascending up and coming a second time
Forget the catechism or the 4 Spiritual Laws, use the brain God gave you. There are plenty of scriptures on the free gift of salvation, which we've all appealed to innumerable times. Use the reason and logic He intended you to use.
Hi Ed, You're right - salvation is a free gift. Essentially, salvation is 1) a renewing of a relationship with God that was broken by sin, and 2) a freedom from the bondage of that sin. I'm not sure where you're coming from, so I'm not quite sure how to answer your post. Is this in response to the Scriptures I shared along with this song on Google Plus a while back? If so, what part are you responding to? Thanks! Grace
This was the first "Messiah" that I bought and listened to and listened to. I am transported 39 years ago.
The power of this majestic music never fails to move this atheist to tears.

Quite. And all feeble, bland and too fast. I wish we'd go back to this majestic, Messianic, Edwardian sound.

There's no greater feeling than singing this medley in the midst of a choir of kindred spirits... Awe inspiring...
What can I say? Praise and worship beyond the beyond! Often I cry when I hear the sopranos reach that last high note...ineffable!

This is so good -- an Amen Chorus that, all the way through, seems to be going somewhere.
I cannot breath until this is over. I look forward to the coming of I Am.
Absolutely my favorite piece out of the entire oratorio!!

Klemperer recorded this in 1964, Ostasio. And thnx for posting it. Klempie rules.
My beloved is mine, and I am his, and his banner over me is LOVE!

Amen;you keep preaching it !

Think Handel would love the overwhelming Goosens/Beecham recording- the rendition is so "pc wrong"but takes your breath away!
Bellissimaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sinfonia

La primera ves que escuche el mesías, me pregunté porque no había cerrado todo el oratorio con el aleluya, cuando escuché este final entendí porqué...
Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con usted.

Grace McIntosh ...Salvation precedes Repentance. I choose to believe God is kinder than the Catholics and Protestant fundamentalists claim.
Hello Ed,
Do you have a Scriptural basis for this belief?
Best,
Grace

Can this particular piece be purchased from iTunes? Please please please respond.
Is this the Greatest finale ever in music's history? The only comparable is in my opinión Dona Nobis Pacem of Bach's Mass in B minor
Génesis Osvaldo It is. The silence before the final Amen may just be the best silence in any piece ever written
Agreed completely!!!
Yes, this is the greatest!!
