  • ***** Notice 5/1/17*****
    Due to the use of a euthanasia poison found in some beef sold to pet food manufactures I have stopped feeding any foods with beef. NO BEEF at this time.
    *****Update 8/29/17*****
    I have moved away from dry foods for every skink every day and moved to using it only for animals who are underweight or need to maintain weight for certain reasons such as pregnant mothers, postpartum mothers, or when they just get out of brumation. I just decided to use wet food only for animals of good weight as some of my animals were getting fat having access to dry food all the time.

    Just came across your video's, very nice. We soak our cat food biscuits until they go soggy, it has all the nutrition they need (47 different vitamins minerals etc). Plus we give our lizards bugs, worms, fly's, bettles and we have just started to bread crickets too. Our Mumma blue tounge (solo) is in a 2mx.5mx.5m outdoor cage, (no wire floor). My boy goes out and finds them, brings them home, removes any ticks and releases them where he founds them again. Cheers from OZ.

    I feed my skink grain free wet dog food with some veggies. A few questions should I add calcium supplements and also should I give him dry food instead? Also final question my skink does not really eat alot in the winter for a want to say 2-3 months. Is this ok? I know they go through brumation but I feel like he/she is not getting enough food. If you answer thanks!

    when i frist got my skink i have her canned dog food. it made her feces smell very bad. I then tried a diet of raw turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, and assorted fruits. the smell got much better. do you find that dog food gives off a bad feces smell? and do you belive the diet im giving her now is alright?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  7 лет назад +4

      I would try to add in some Omni Gold by Arcadia or Repashy's Bluey Buffet or some other brand of dog food as just turkey may not get all the nutrients she needs. Lots of people who use homemade food end up with health problems down the line as opposed to canned dog foods.... Possibly a different brand of food may make the poop smell better...lol. I know certain brands give mine some smelly runny poos.

    So when feeding for 6 months and older you feed wet dog food 2-3 times and just leave a bowl of dry dog food? How about when they get over a year do you keep doing the dry dog food or just do wet?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  6 лет назад +1

      Actually I've gone to dry food for postpartum and pregnant females only and everything else gets wet only. So Babies get wet everyday. 6mo+ gets wet 2-3 times a week and adults get wet weekly. I only give dry food to pregnant and postpartum females now.

    what time of day should you feed your skinks? How many cubes of repashy should you feed?(depending on age) also what did you mean when you said you give dry food and wet on the same day?/

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  7 лет назад +2

      tahne kariguddaiah i like to feed afternoon or early evening. Depends how big the cubes and skink are. The amount volume (not cube size) should be the same as double the size of their head. I feed dry to some of my skinks in a bowl all the time if they are thin from brumation or need to put on weight. Then I also offer wet food on a plate to them as well. Wet is the best for ensuring they ingest their supplements and dry helps them pack on pounds if needed as they can eat whenever hungry.

  • @OreoLennon
    @OreoLennon 6 лет назад

    When feeding your skinks, you don't seem to hand feed yet most care sheets say to. Does that mater or is it more of a bonding thing? Also, the only way i can get my baby bluey to eat is to dig him out of the substrate which he clearly doesn't love. I'm doing that to keep him from brumating since he's a baby, but should i not do that? Obviously I'm very gentile, but he gets rather huffy with me when uncovering him.

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  6 лет назад

      What are your temps? Babies should be hungry when warm enough, especially an Indonesian that doesn't naturally brumate. Can you please share the links to these caresheets? Hand feeding is useful to help build a bond with your animal but absolutely not required. Very few keepers I know hand feed as a routine. Possibly for treats but that's it.

    Can you feed them dog food instead of cat food when they are young? What would the difference really be? Great video by the way, very informative:)

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  6 лет назад

      Thanks. The difference is the protein source. Young omnivores (our skinks) need a higher amount of animal proteins while young. Cat food has more animal protein than dog food. Many keepers have noted over the years that feeding dog food at a young age causes scale beading(swelling of the scales) which makes the skinks smooth scales look more like that of a shingleback. We don't know of any significant effects other than that. In the wild the young are born in a time when animal protein is most abundant (usually slugs, snails, and insects). Does that makes sense?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад +1

    My blue tongue will not eat bugs or salad the only thing I can get her to eat is egg yolk and banana any recommendations

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад

      Stop the banana and egg. Offer only wet cat food with liver in it. I suggest Halo Turkey and Liver (Assuming you are in the USA) or Pedigree (Assuming you are in Australia) wet dog food. Only offer every three days and only that food. Healthy skinks almost never starve themselves. A picky skink is not a hungry skink. They may need to get hungry to want to eat. Too much banana is not good at all. Avoid the banana and egg until he is eating the correct food (wet dog food) for several weeks and then only give the fruit as a snack. Also watch my skink wont eat video. Just in case your issue is also covered there.

      Zignature is a great dog food for them. The kangaroo should be a good source of protein also. I would rotate many different types if you can. Check out my caresheets on my website for more info. www.reptilemountain.com/husbandry

    I’ve had my BTS for three weeks now. I’ve been giving it wet food every other day and leaving dry dog food out for it at all times. I’ve noticed that my BTS ignores the wet food completely and only eats the dry. Can I just rotate between a few dry foods since it doesn’t seem interested in the wet food so far?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад

      The dry food can have a better "salty" taste. Wet food tends to be better for their long term health (kidney functions according to former zoo vet). I would stop putting out dry unless the animal is underweight and just do wet.

      Hi! Great question, in the wild they are omnivorous opportunistic generalists eating a variety of plant and animal materials. I know of one very experienced breeder who does use it as a staple for babies and possibly adults as well. I also know a couple other breeders who were involved in the testing phase of it and don't like it much, so reviews are mixed. I guess it would be up to you. I don't use it as a staple but it is in my rotation. It is a much better choice than a home made mix that could be considerably unbalanced by accident. I hope this helps.

      Kirk Carlson Hey thanks for watching! I'd be hesitant to say it would suffice to use Bluey Buffet as a staple this early in the game. Since it's so new there isn't a plethora of data so it would be kind of an educated guess to say one way or the other. I'm personally not using it that way yet but you can try it... I believe a major breeder fed it as a staple for his 2016 babies.

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  6 лет назад +1

      +Gilda Pucci Younger skinks require more protein than vegetation. Its an ontogenetic diet variation. Many cat foods have some vegetation as well. For example many cat foods have zucchini, carrots, etc...just much less than dog food. Skinks are more carnivorous/insectivorous as babies/juveniles thus cat food fits the need better initially.

    Dogfood and catfoods are not an adequate diet for reptiles, for many reasons. Adding synthetic D3 is a complete guessing game too. How have you worked out the vitamin amounts?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  7 лет назад +4

      Andrew Wood Thanks for the reply. Cat and dog food has been a go to staple for Blue Tongue Skinks in captivity for over 25 years and the results are hundreds if not thousands of healthy animals thriving. There is no evidence to support that it is inadequate. Its a quality omnivore diet that works. I add approximately a teaspoon of calcium with D3 to the animals' meals on a monthly basis. It has proven successful for me as all my animals are in peak health and have been.
