- This segment from Australian Colour Diary 4 shows the the historical features that could still be found there when the film was made in 1957. Many of these remain today. If you know specific locations in the film or even some of the people featured we would love to hear from you. Made by The National Film Board in 1957 and now part of the NFSA's Film Australia Collection.

I can't help but wonder what Parramatta would look like in 50 years or so. It would be as unrecognizable as today's Parramatta compared to the 1950's.
Someone should make a video of Parramatta now so it could be viewed in the future.

I recognised the 2nd scene: looking c. South up Church Street with St Johns in the background. I was born near the end of 1955, but Parramatta looked much the same as this when my memory 'kicked in' from 1959. I seem to remember mum taking me to Murray Bros. a lot, which I think is the pale bldg with the Australian flag on top (in the same 2nd scene).
Yeah, this was when Australia really was the Lucky Country. We lived in Utopia, but we didnt know it.
0:32 Grace Bros store corner of Argyle and Church Streets, now Westfields.
0:35 Fair Deal Holden Church and Early Streets, building still there as far as I know, this part of Church Street was known as Auto Alley from all the car yards between Gt Western Hwy and Parramatta Road

It was Ron Hodgson for a long time and Westfield started in the late 70’s
Thanks for the memories. Most historic buildings don’t exist anymore. I now hate Parramatta , I would prefer yester years. It’s lost all character.

From c. 2:09 -- that looks to be "Wisteria Gardens" in the Parramatta Psychiatric Centre. (The North West boundary of Parramatta Park abuts the Parramatta Psychiatric hospital, but the Wisteria are well within the hospital grounds.) There used to be a Spring "Wisteria Fete" there every year. Haven't been since the 1980's. My grandfather Charles Renshaw was given a medal by...I think it was the NSW Government, for his work on either creating or improving the gardens in the Parramatta Psychiatric hospital. (No, he wasn't a patient, but head gardener there...between the Wars I think, MAYBE during or even before World War I. He was definitely a labourer helping to build the Canadian-Pacific Railway when he first left London.)
c. 1:05 - 1:10 I never visited Elizabeth Farm or Government House, but the Governor's Bath House (didn't know what it was until now) we used to have a short play in most summer weekends on our walk from Mays Hill to Parramatta Baths from late 1962 to early 1965 (when Wentworthville Baths were built -- a bit closer).

Wish I knew where the last panorama was taken from. I'm guessing that's some part of the Blue Mountains in the distance, but whether the camera is looking SW, or due West, or NW, I can't tell; and what's got me tricked is that there's a middle-distance 'horizon' with quite a dip on its far side which seems to extend to the distant plateau (which I assume is some part of the "Blue Mountains").
0:27 is taken at around 250 church street parramatta.

Shane Anderson you mean white people? There are plenty of Aussies there they just dont look like the ones you see here.

Also, at 1:11, I'm sure that first church building is the one on the corner of Church and Palmer street just north of the river.
When did they demolish that beautiful building at 207 Church St? :'(

The only people from Asian countries were on the Colombo Plan. That meant they came out here to study and learn a trade, and would go back and put what they learned to good use for their own countries. Plus the migrants who came to build the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and settled in various suburbs in the inner city mainly. What a heaven it was back then.
You mean when non-white people knew their place, and it was assumed 'fullblood' Aboriginal people would eventually die out or, through intermarriage, blackness would be 'bred out', leaving only whites.
It doesnt look like that now
Now in 2020 parramatta is full of high rises meritons and useless 19th century light rail it looks nothing like it did when I was a kid and I'm 22 NSW government is shocking
