I talked him into to playing it again the other day he's 73 and still knows this song by heart but doesnt really like talking about his hippy days love this song and my dad
God I love this song so much! Words can't describe how happy this makes me! Syd Barrett was so unique, had such a way with words and wrote songs effortlessly in spite of his growing insanity. It's a shame Syd had to drop out of the band but in the end, it still worked out, because Roger took over as the lyricalist and Gilmour replaced Syd, and Pink Floyd became super famous after that.
Used in "X-Files" "Lord Of the Flies" The "creature of the week" was a young man who is misunderstood and is a fan of Syd's. Not a great episode but because of this being mentioned, I like it. I understand the young man's issues.

A sad story... Syd Barett was a talented, gifted young man... A real tragedy for the whole family... Pink Floyd ignored the problem, says Nick Mason... Syd's older brother was a doctor!!! They also repressed it!!! He said: Everything is fine... Nothing is fine... When he made his 2 solo albums, Syd Barett was a sick person... He was on the verge of schizophrenia... I'm interested in how he lived with his illness afterwards... Unfortunately there are no more books in Germany...

He just stopped enjoying what the band was becoming. I guess he didn't want this to become a mainstream band controlled by some assholes from a major label, as a very ambitious artist he had a right to feel this way. The LSD's alienating effect wasn't helping it neither.
The fact that he had blown his mind on acid and who knows what and would stand on the stage playing on chord all night is a pretty good reason. Somewhat like what happened to Brian Jones of the Stones, who was once their leader.

Whereafter he became withdrawn despondent and completely unreliable. Before things got too bad they brought in Syd's old friend Dave to learn Syd's guitar parts. At times Syd couldn't or wouldn't play other times he was nowhere to be found. Eventually they just stopped picking him up. In a nutshell.
