I'm from a generation that got into Pink Floyd via Syd Barrett rather than the other way round. I just finished listeing to DSOTM for the first time in years and everything I like about that era of Floyd is just immediately captured far better by this one song by Syd. Writing classes always state 'Show don't tell'' 'Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way' is a terrific quotable line but by god Syd does a far better job of showing what its like to be a bored english adolescent staring out of a window on an eternal weekend afternoon dreaming up a world all of your own.
There are no words to describe how I felt the first time I listened terrapin, and it is the same feeling after years. It's a combination between happiness, melancholy, sadness and joy when he changes to the A major chord. It's a magic feeling of sadness and happiness at the same time. Hard to explain, there is no one like Syd.
Hi Libby, nice to "meet" you in the comments. So you're the "muse" of this song ? It's a very beautiful song, it must be touching to know it was written for you. We miss him, but he left us some great music and poetry. He was the Piper...
He probably did have a way with words, but he had a lot of different techniques developed that no one really ever talks about. I found a rare book one time that I haven’t been able to phone since it was about Pink Floyd in 1967 and it has some Roger Waters stuff in it where he elaborated on how Sid wrote lyrics he pulled from everything because octopus is just lines from forms stitch together
Thanks RHCP and John Frusciante, I recently went back to listen to Pink Floyd's old albums, it occurred to me that I had never listened to Syd Barrett's work in particular. But the day before yesterday, when I was watching the video of RHCP's live in Argentina, I saw John Frusciante singing a song called Terrapin, and it brought me here. Absolutely masterpiece.
Why do so many people focus on the admittedly shambolic production of this album and not how well crafted the songs are. This song, for instance, has a very advanced musicality that would not become vogue for another 25 years. A mature talent, so sad it went away. I wish Syd would have recorded some songs in his home (ala Daniel Johnston) to be released after his death.
I closed my eyes while listening and was taken away to a beautiful, peaceful, place of soft comfort. And somehow the solace envelopes my soul and brings me contentment whenever my mind drifts to this beautiful work. Thank you, Syd.
@@rubeng3 great song to learn, one thing about syd barret acoustic tunes that can better your playing is seeing the chords he used that were out of key and the feeling they give. That can be used for when writing your own chord progression and wantin to throw things off.
I always thought (and heard, and liked) the lyric being "The Move About is all we do" as in The Move About is the only dance they do. Not the Twist, not the Jerk, the Move About! That's all them fishes do... right? I like it my way. 😊
They played this at a red hot chili peppers concert. Me and my cousin were the only one singing this while ever one else was just confused. It was so funny.
I can understand Pink Floyd songs ...(most ) Syd´s songs ,on the other hand ,have this inhumane quality to them -as if it´s not even filtered through a human being ...they appear to us straight from The Source ...
You think a person with Schizophrenia could write something as beatiful as this . Rosemary ( Rogers sister said many times he NEVER had Schizophrenia !! I believe her 100 % !!!! HE WAS A GENUS !!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤
YES a person with schizophrenia could write something as beautiful as this AND/OR could be an ashole speaking without knowing. Being schizophrenic doesn't mean being able of nothing.
His eyes were so mysterious, I wonder what kind of soul he was/is

Shine on Syd!

Thank you, Frusciante, for show me this beautiful song!

Same here. All his songs give me the same great feelings I had when i first heard them nearly 40 years ago.
This song sounds how Sunday afternoon feels 😌
This song was written for me .... Syd gave me the record in 1971 .... I had been married 4 years and had a baby son! x

fake
No not fake she dated Syd in the 1960s and is in a few Pink Floyd Documentaries.
Oh, one of the best comments I have ever saw on RUclips. If you can, please, comment my comment, it will be a good achievement for me)
Syd's lyrics are incredible. The man had a way with words
he painted with them.

Untouchable talent.

3:54 - 4:00 that part hits different
makes me levitate 💭
listen this on 🍄 would be fantastic
Loving Syds work. Tremendous album The Madcap Laughs.
I closed my eyes while listening and was taken away to a beautiful, peaceful, place of soft comfort. And somehow the solace envelopes my soul and brings me contentment whenever my mind drifts to this beautiful work. Thank you, Syd.
ABSOLUTELY !!!! 😊😊
Really first discovering Sid, I am amazed by his musicality not even sure if that’s a word 4:11 but you know what I mean lol
This and golden hair are one of the first songs i learned to play on my first acoustic, still my favorite song to play on my guitars.
Love both
My go to song to play when trying out guitars .
Currently learning ''Opel'' as my first song. Terrapin is next!

Grande Syd...!!..Gracias por Compartir... Saludosss......
Best posthumous channel

❤ 😎 A great melody! Syd is a one of a kind artist. I love his work. Much respect.
Nice to see an official channel ❤
Love it even more after all these years
Puro talento . Genio .

There is something similar in Barret's lyrics and Kurt Cobain's lyrics. "About a girl" has a similar vibe to this one
Parabéns pelo canal! Syd merece vídeos bem produzidos com suas letras.
Lovely video, fits the slowness of the song perfectly, and terrapins are slow movers.. I love this song always..
I really love this channel, yes I do
Oh baby I can not wait until the next video...
I love it! Wonderful song!
Finalmente!!! Che meraviglia!!!! ❤
Syd mi commuove sentire le sue parole
Sarai sempre nel mio cuore ❤️🎸🌹
i remember when i heard this for the first time, i bawled my eyes out. i think this is his best song 🤍
The music industry made his painting dreams seem dead so he killed syd barrett. Long live the music and artistry of RKB❤

🤩 🙏 A ÉTIENNE DAHO ( Chambre 29 ) SYD 💫
“We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year”
That guitar in a way sounds like a Terrapin moving his way on the ground
He also made drawings of a terrapin . Must have been a fascination.
Of. I go to play the cd…
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really love you
and I mean you ❤
Syd is the best
