My fave book of April is a historical fantasy called The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless.
Sounds exciting! I've not heard of that book. Thanks for watching 👀!
Great reviews, Jon! I'm having the devil of a time keeping up with your prolific output of episodes though, could you slow it down a bit? :) Cheers.
Don't feel obliged to watch them all! (Oh ok then....). Thanks for watching 👀.
April was a great month for me. Only one book below 5/10 and several great books: a reread of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Flowers for Algernon, and Inverted World, which is a new favorite (wow!).
Wow indeed! I read Flowers for Algernon last year, clever book but left me a bit cold. I confess I'm yet to read Do Androids..... bad scavenger! Thanks for watching 👀
I saw Flowers for Algernon as a stage production in the round in a small (only about 15m in any direction) community theatre years ago. It was a very raw experience.
I've read the short story, the novel, seen a play and the movie Charlie and I think there was a novella too.
I think you will enjoy the rest of the Red rising books. 👀
Hope so! Thanks for watching 👀
Looks like you had a good month, two reads that were a bit meh, but in general you've enjoyed what you've read
Yes, no total stinkers. Can't be bad. Cheers Andrew, thanks for watching 👀!
Squee - I just finished Bear Head and really enjoyed it, it would have been an 8 for me, but I am glad you enjoyed it too.
That David Weber is reminding me a lot of a... was it Poul Anderson? Where aliens come to subdue Earth with weapons suited to advanced technology but which can be taken out with axes and swords?
I must be the only person on Earth that did not like Red Rising....
Might well do, i don't know that one. It was silly fun, very forgettable. Thanks for watching 👀!
I ended up giving Bear Head a 7 cos i gave Dogs of War an 8 and felt that was a better book. Should've given DoW a 9 in the first, too stingey. Red Rising seems to be either the best thing since sliced bread, or just total arse. I was nearer to the sliced bread end of the spectrum i think. I wonder if I'd have been less enamoured if I'd had to actually read it (vs listening on audiobook). 🤷♂️
I'm a bit behind with reading again while I try to make some progress on writing but my story has become a bit of a ship of Theseus where nothing is different but at the same time everything has changed. I have to do some worldbuilding homework 99% of which won't be in the book but I nonetheless need to know to write it.
I like books that feel like they have a backstory, some heft to the history, even if referred to only obliquely, or just implied. Got a lot of that in Lord Valentine's Castle which I just finished (fabulous. No pressure!). Good luck with your writing Brian, and thanks for watching 👀!
@@SciFiScavenger No, no pressure at all, lol. I aspire to be a tenth as good as Silverberg and that still feels grandiose.
Thanks for the good wishes and the same in return.
I enjoyed the Bohr Maker by Linda Nagata as well as the Embers of War series by Gareth L Powell. Have read anything by either of these authors? Cheers.
No I've not read any of their books (yet). I'll look out for both of them. Thanks for watching 👀!
You just can't help yourself, can you eh? (Suits me).
Ha no. Thanks for watching 👀 !
You do seem to prefer the Apocalypse genre, don't you, Jon?
Sorry to hear about Out if the Dark. I enjoyed it, despite Weber's pedantic tendencies. 😂 For me, I managed to just about finish the Belgariad last month. I'm of two minds in what to read next. Time to reread the original five Amber books, or start again on the Wheel of Time? I'm obviously in a fantasy mood, though I do have some recently purchased Heinleins that are tempting...🐶😛
Congrats on your re-read of the Belgariad! I liked the Weber, up to a point, but it wasn't great writing, i thought. Thanks for watching 👀!
@@SciFiScavenger Try In Fury Born. Weber at his peak, writing a violent, go-for-broke action novel. Its extremely good. 🙂😉
Yes i remember you saying it's lurking on my shelves, big fat hardback lump!
I'm working on Red Rising right now and currently hating it. I've got 3 hours left on the audiobook and struggling. It's just so poorly written.
Oh dear!! For what it's worth i gather it improves with the following books. On the other hand , you're hating it, drop it and move on! Thanks for watching 👀!
@@SciFiScavenger yeah man I really wanna give book 2 a try still, because I hear it's so entertaining. Gonna give it a go!
@@SciFiScavenger yessir, always enjoy your videos!
Thank the gods I am not the only person on Earth who loved this book! I DNFed it, it was just so poorly written and I could not give a toss about the whiny, verbose main character.
@@OmnivorousReaderyou are not alone! I really can't find one redeeming quality in it. It really is a modern YA-leaning fantasy novel with science fiction skin. It's left me so cold it's hard to even describe why I don't enjoy it. I'm apathetic towards all the characters and their plights.
9 books in a month … wow. I'm happy when I get one or two done … I'm currently reading Timothy Zahns "ICARUS HUNT", it‘s okay, but once again, Zahn fails to describe essential parts of the surroundings. There is this, there is that, but he doesn't give us any clues how it looks. It seems to be a general problem I have with his writing, the same occured when I read his StarWars books …
I have Icarus hunt on my shelves too, perhaps I'll give it a miss! Thanks for watching 👀!
@@SciFiScavenger You might want to keep it. SciFi Odyssee just picked it as one of five lesser known but great Space Operas 😉 Maybe it’s just me …
David Webber has a lot of fails and never finished series and I’m not a fan of his main series the one with the woman and her pet
Honor Harrington. I've read a couple, fun enough. May read more but may not. Thanks for watching 👀!
