  • The Worst Car General Motors Has Ever Mademade - Is The Chevrolet Vega
Chevrolet Vega, produced by General Motors, became known as one of the most unsuccessful cars. Issues with assembly quality, corrosion, and an unreliable engine made it one of the worst vehicles in the manufacturer's history

I never had a Vega, but I did own a Chevette, blown engine around 2k miles, blown head gasket 5k miles, alternator bracket broke that took out radiator fan and alternator, floor shifter broke off in my hand at the threads, right at the locking nut. I vote for the Chevette as the worst car GM ever made.

It's a close call between those two turds. But no one ever repurposed a Chevette by transplanting a v8. So I vote for turd number 1.

My GF had a new Shevette and it lasted her 5 years with only a couple minor problems. Then the motor on that clean pampered little car locked up.

Chevettes were pretty durable. Their engines were cast iron, and had been in European vehicles for years.

Where to begin? The Vega had a 2.3 liter engine, not a 2.0. Only the Cosworth had a 2 liter. They NEVER left the factory with V-8. They used A-390 alloy in the cylinder which was 83% aluminum, roughly 17% silica, with some other compounds. The same alloy Porsche Mercedes used in some gas engines. Chevy designed a 2.0 liter engine with a cross flow head for the Vega. GM had inked a deal with Reynolds Aluminum to design Vega engines. The Reynolds engines also had an aluminum head, but had issues passing the emission standards. GM technical designed the cast iron head that was used. Not their best design by a long stretch, but if you plan to trash them, do a little research.

They weren't fancy but they got you back and forth to work. And if you V8 swapped them they were a lot of fun.

No, they didn’t get you back and forth to work, you’re thinking of a Volkswagen.

Your videos of the "V8 Vegas" made absolutely NO SENSE here. It seems like most of the video was of those and the Cosworth Vega. You also said "Shivolay" instead of "Chevrolet"... #STUPIDITY

I'm suspicious this was narrated by a European or maybe a 100% AI video. Either way it was lame.

Was a Chevrolet technician in the 70's. All I did for 23 months was replace Vega engines. Some brand new ones only lasted 12 miles before the head gasket blew.

I drove my buddy's Vega station wagon from Little Rock to Orlando...packed tight with all my stuff, a desk and my bike on top. Did a really nice 360 hydroplaning in a sudden rainstorm at 60 mph (downhill) on the freeway. Nice and smooth, good steady rotation, not too fast and not a bit of fishtailing coming out. The bald tires helped to keep it smooth. I enjoyed it.

I almost bought one in 1975 but got a Nova instead. Turned out to be a good decision.

I test drove a new Vega in 72. It was crude, awkward and sloppy. Those were the good points. The brochure in the show room bragged about the 50THOUSAND mile disposable engine. POS doesn't come close to describing this POS.

I do not agree. Look at GM's amazing European offerings. Opel/vauxhall.

I bought a non running Vauxhall in NTexas. Interior was very refined. Body was well fitted. But IDK bout the drive train. Couldn't find any parts so I crushed it.

What year? Don't tell me the model, I'd love to guess. 80s and 90's Interior refined... Vauxhall omega/senator?

We had one. Paid 200 bucks for it. Told the kids to keep their feet up off of the floor (like, put them on the hump) as there was really not much in the way of "floorboards". Just that sound deadening stuff and floor rubber. No metal. My wife drove it to work for ...a time. And then one day it just stopped. Can't remember, seems to me it was timing belt? Chain? It went to the junk yard.

My parents had a Vega and I remember it had a junky interior. It was decent daily driver for a few years but one day either the engine or transmission seized while backing out of a parking spot. My dad had it towed directly to the junk yard so I guess he had enough of that car 😂 He never bought a Chevy again.

My first car. 76 Vega with a 305 small block. I thought it was fast🤣

I was speeding down a straight stretch of road late at night. I saw tail lights ahead and I was doing 90 MPH so I pulled over to blow the doors off. Right before I reached the back bumper the little white Vega floored it and pulled a hundred feet in front of me. Then it slowed down. He had a 350 crammed in that little engine bay.

If they hadn't made some stupid decisions, this could have been a great car. Instead started with a proven engine and drive train, (From Opel Germany), proven rust protection. Upgrade later. It happens to be one of the best looking american cars. It look so nice. It could have been a great success. How could they fail??
