A fellow student back in the 70's had a brand new vega and it drove really nice.
Very solid & smooth and drove straight as an arrow. I was impressed.and it looked good. It's a shame that it developed this bad reputation.

Vega wasn't a musvle car. The '73 SD455 Trans Am was.

They should have used the older Chevy two four cylinder which was reliable and economical but like Ford engineers they had to do new instead of smart.
Well at least it had room for the V8, which made it a great hotrod.

Vegas, Pintos, Gremlins were all very much still around and being driven in the mid 80s...they weren't the best but they were cheap!

The 1972 Buick Electra 225 was a small Economy car.🤣

The kind of cars they need to be building today. Sturdy reliable and cheap.. if they break down just go ahead and buy another one

I’m retired GM Mastertech, and that was the worst car among a bunch of others that GM makes to this day specially the Duramax diesel that is the worst engine made next to this Vega

I don't know, brother. The 3.6 is a total disaster.
However, I spent many a happy afternoon converting Vegas into fun and reliable cars. Of course, I used Toyota components but whatever, right?

No, the market did not demand - government did, with cafe standards: something that produced an extra 5k motorist dearhs a year for a few years. The vega too small/underpowered for chevy loyalists - that market was being cracked open by the japanese at the time, who did know how to build smalll engines. I think the last time I saw any vega's in operation was late 80's, surviving because a small block v8 got stuffed under the hood.
So I disagree: this vehicle made zero significant contributions to automotive technology and the claim of some german manufcturers borrowing from it sounds as thin as the engineering that foisted this quintessential malaise car on a public that never asked for it. These went to scrapyards fast - like yugo's. This car was also a reaction to the arrival of "Japan, Inc" [as Time once put it], and was bested by the lowly Datsun B-210
