What a fine document , so nostalgic, with the voice of an angel. Almost heavenly.

O you cannot know how absolutely BELOVED Anna Moffo was back in the day, with prime time television shows in both the US and in Italy, presenting both opera and interviews and informative entertainment-she brought light to and lifted so many lives. This number may seem hokey-dokey but as a measure of how her character, and talent, and visionary musical magicianship was welcomed by the masses, it is an apt illustration.

thank you, thank you, thank you. Falstaff is the greatest opera and this scene and music is among Verdi's best. Thankfully Serafin is conducting here and not vonKarajan, who seemed to conduct this deathly slow- not at all the 'quicksilver' as suggested by Toscanini.

@@norwegianforestcat7471 2 different sound/film tracks. Splicing problems. The beginning of the aria has quite a lot of echo on it and it looks like she is singing playback - the lip-sync is off. After 0:23 the sound is much more direct and it seems that from then on she is singing live. They obviously did many takes because the fading in and out of the kids at the end is post editing. It is of course to be forgiven as in 1956 they were technically still in the stone age regarding live opera performances :)

Ahhhhhh, the Windsor Great Forest scene, where poor foolish Falstaff gets the scare of his life! "Falstaff" is one of my favorites . . . Verdi's last and perhaps greatest work, showing that not only did the the Old Man still have IT, but that he could write a convincing comedy - although, I have to say that I like his "Un giorno di regno" pretty well; I don't share the view of the Italian critics who panned its premiere, or the audiences who stayed away. Take it on its own merits.

At her best Moffo was untouchable in certain roles, above all Violetta Valery. But her Gilda,Marguerite & Liù were incomparable. And this is exactly the way she sounded live, except for one thing you which can't tell here: this was a big, full lyric voice which filled the MET.
