This is such a great first episode of a series. It introduces all the characters, the themes, and the drama, and ends with a solid cliffhanger. So good. The acting in this show is top tier, and the character development is is great as well. Easily one of my favorite shows.
Thanks Nalia! So glad to hear it. Some shows can be rocky in the first episode as they establish the scene, characters, story. But to your point, this one did it so effortlessly, I immediately liked it. :)

Thank you, Frances! Yeah, I'm going to feel really bad now if August and Felice in particular end up being nice characters later working soup kitchens lol
Good commentary! And fun facts and trivia for the show? Well, Simon's actor Omar Rudberg used to be in a popular Swedish boyband, now he's a solo artist. This show is his first time ever acting, which one couldn't even tell, he is so talented and amazing for the role! And Wilhelm's actor, Edvin Ryding, has been acting since he was about five years old, so as one would expect, he is just phenomenal. Can't wait for you to see the rest!
Thank you, Senja!! Yeah, I'm really excited to see more. I TOTALLY would have thought it would be the other way around with Omar- he is a great actor imo, so I would have thought actor first. Like I said in the final thoughts, I really was impressed with everyone actually. As actors, they all did very well. I already don't like August, which tells me that actor is going a great job because he's probably very nice in real life. lol
Fun Facts: Simon (Omar Rudberg)- He is a singer and this was his first acting gig. Wilhem/Wille (Edvin Ryding)- was 17 when young royals started filming and has been acting since 5 years old. Sara( Frida Argento)- Has ADHD in real life. August (Malte Gardinger)- auditioned for the role of Simon originally. Brilliant show with excellent acting!
I totally agree!! They've ALL done SO well in just this first episode! Which, let's face it, isn't always the best in series that go on to become beloved later. Re: Simon, I will only say that I am very glad it went to Omar. Not that I would EVER pick favorites, you understand, but damn.. lol

A note about the school. School is technically free in Sweden. Boarding and extra activities are not. So town kids can go as day students. Much the way scholarship kids can go to elite schools in the US but don't really participate in all the school life at the same level. That's how it was explained to me.
Ahhhh, thank you!! So that's why Simon keeps saying he's "non-res" then.. I assume they still have to pass some test to get into the school, but it's free to attend once they do. And then if they want to live-in, participate, etc., that's extra. Gotcha :)
Yayyy!!!! I'm so excited to finally see your reactions to this show. I love how right away your instincts were right on about August being an absolute jacka**. The actor who plays him does a great job of making you absolutely hate him. To be honest, I kinda stumbled onto this show by accident, had no idea what it was. I remember trying to watch Dark in the English dub, and a lot of the emotion got lost. They all got me hooked with their performances. And the episode went by fast! I may put 2 episodes in one reaction going forward, haven’t decided yet ;)

Yeah, I tend to binge shows pretty hard when I'm not watching them for the channel. It's killing me not to just watch the whole season in one night while eating Doritos like normal. lol
Hi Isabell!! Thank you so much. Yeah I heard that, and I want to go back and rewatch at least one episode with the dubbing just for fun. When it comes to foreign language content, however, I love me some original with subtitles. ;) Learned that lesson watching Dark on Netflix. Original German with subtitles was much more genuine feeling.
@@DavidvsFilm I totally agree! I almost all the time watch movies in the original language... there is a very good movie (I find) in (I think) from India. It's called "Sir" in the (I don't know really) original. I had to watch it in German, since there was no English dubbing for it and I really really can not understand Hindi 😂... but once I was more familiar with what was spoken I watched it in the original language. And I find that you totally watch and perceive different things if you are within the original space of the action. All the small micro mimics and gestures correspond with what is being said and even a little different translation or the timing in what word was spoken when can make a difference I find. Funnily enough I found this show (YR) because I am learning Swedish - and I'm glad I did. For more than one reason...
@@IO_sWorld haha that’s a great story about how you found YR. And I completely agree with the features corresponding more seamlessly with the dialogue, etc., of subtitles vs dibbled films. Speaking of Indian related movies, btw.. one of my absolute favorite movies is Lion with Dev Patel. The version of it I originally saw at home did not have English subtitles for the first half. So I kind of identified with how the kid felt in that respect, not having any clue what they were saying to him since he didn’t speak their language.
Damn shame, isn't it?? His schedule isn't as flexible as mine, and he has been gun shy about committing to a whole season of a show. BUT, and it's not a sure thing yet, I have almost convinced him to watch Stranger Things right after I'm done with Young Royals. That should be late April/early May :)
Hahaha I'm editing the second episode now, Larry, and I just saw Felice get her pit waxed. So, you are technically correct, but that's on the line.. lol
I made the mistake with Squid Game of watching it with the dubbed English, so I watched this in the original Swedish with English subtitles. But then I learned that the cast does their own English dub. Omar (Simon) and Edvin (Wille) speak English pretty well. I watched YR in Swedish (several times) but I did watch it in English too. That was interesting because you catch a bit more of what's being said in the background.
@@DavidvsFilm I still prefer the original Swedish because the emotion of the moment is better expressed. But if you ever want to rewatch the episode/series again, certainly try the English version. There were a couple of moments where there are people in the background speaking but the CC/subtitles don't translate what they're saying because they focus on the main conversation. I think I picked up a new tidbit that way.
@lynnhettrick7588 I agree with that. I watched it 1st in the original and then went back an watched again in English version and since I already knew what was going on/wasn't distracted reading sub titles I was able to catch so many back ground things that I had originally missed.
Mostly movies, yeah, but I started watching tv shows on the channel to be able to put out 2 videos per week rather than 1 (tv episodes are faster to edit). This week happened to be 2 shows so I could catch up on my editing after vacation, but next Friday will be another movie with Everything Everywhere All at Once.
this show is phenomenal, can't wait to see your reactions! and when you're done, if you love YR, I could only recommend you watch SKAM (which is just as good btw) :)

@@DavidvsFilm have to watch that one yet - it's still on my watchlist... maybe I will up that one a little 😅
@@DavidvsFilm Lion! I love that movie.
Also, really like your treeguitar T-shirt in this video.
Why is David Marc-less?
Damn shame, isn't it?? His schedule isn't as flexible as mine, and he has been gun shy about committing to a whole season of a show. BUT, and it's not a sure thing yet, I have almost convinced him to watch Stranger Things right after I'm done with Young Royals. That should be late April/early May :)
The two grossest parts of the series were in this episode, so no more gross stuff!
Ahhh the dilemma! That’s not common that you get the original actors. Hmm. So which did you end up preferring?
I thought you watched movies. Why are you reacting to icky icky tv shows.
@@DavidvsFilm I appreciate the reply. Look forward to next Friday!
Yeah of course, Scott!! Just fyi the next 3 Fridays will be Everything Everywhere All at Once, Shawshank Redemption, then Blazing Saddles :)
this show is phenomenal, can't wait to see your reactions! and when you're done, if you love YR, I could only recommend you watch SKAM (which is just as good btw) :)
Thanks, @Lys!!! This is the first I'm hearing of SKAM (that I recall), so thank you for the recommendation :)
@@DavidvsFilm SKAM France Season 3 is AMAZING!!!! You don’t have to watch the previous seasons necessarily, since each season follows a different character.
