Fact #1. everyone is exposing the problems while offer zero solution.
It’s called rubber
beeswax.
You can reapply dwr solution
Lol god forbid you think for yourself and look up your own info. If you’re complaining about someone else not telling you how to fix a problem for you, then you’ve learned nothing the past few years. He brought a potential issue to your attention, it’s up to you to find a solution if you have that kind of material. Youre 100% one of those people who blindly follow the directions of the first RUclips account you see when looking things up, without double checking their info and end up doing a hack job on whatever you’re tryna do 😂 bunch of complainers, takes more to type your comment then to google the solution😂😂 l-a-z-y!
Rubber, Vinyl, polyester, nylon, oilcloth, latex, eVent membrane, wax coated, reapplying dwr are all alternatives
Actually the jacket will remain waterproof but when it wets out it can no longer breathe so condensation builds up on the inside
true dat true dat
That is only true if the jacket has a waterproof membrane beneath the top layer.
If you want really long lasting jackets, then look for 3 layered fabrics. And rtfm many membranes are very sensitive in their washing.
This isn't even true (at least it is misleading). If DWR _only_ failed because of wearing off, then that would be acceptable to most people.
However, DWR will fail THE FIRST TIME YOU WEAR IT IN HEAVY RAIN for half an hour or more (plus or minus a little depending on the jacket).
That is a much greater problem than wearing out.
Reproof your jacket in your laundry washer with goretex or whichever membrane proofing liquid is required, simple & easier than buying new gear
💡
Or just use the coating on... whatever???
Experiments 😊
Do not add water repellant trestment to your laundry washer.
and the solution is.... (the bit missing)
Seems he is just telling us how screwed we are if we have dwr rain jackets.
@@conditionallytriggered2313 nope, he’s saying that you can’t rely on a jacket that’s heavily reliant on dwr for the long term. The solution to this is reapplying a layer of dwr (often in a form of spray can) to the jacket every 3-4 uses (under heavy weather)
wax or that spray you get in the shoe shops
You can retreat your gear with dwr. Have t done it myself, but there are sprays, and I believe even laundry detergent.
Seam sealer. I re-waterproofed an entire tent with seam sealer
I like Patagonias approach with H2NO. It’s not a proprietary membrane, it’s literally just a standard each piece of gear needs to meet. So if you actually read what each piece of thier raingear was designed for and buy appropriately, you’ll be set.
I got a 3-layer Rainshadow three years ago cause I wanted something storm worthy that looked good around town and that was the only high quality one I could find in budget.
It’s been perfect, and seen some severe weather where I’d have been in real time Rourke had it even leaked. I only trust H2NO and Gore Tex Pro if I can help it. eVent breathes way better than others but sounds like plastic and isn’t particularly durable.
thanks for the video about DWR
What about goretex?
I've not used a gtx or other membrane fabric jacket for over 20 years. Ventile is the only answer that suits my outdoor needs and isn't sweaty either.
Thank you reminding me. After a couple wet days in Sweden, I was planning on standing in my rainjacket in my shower as soon as I arrived back home. Because I really can't tell if it was doing a good job: was rain getting through or was I just sweating underneath? I'll need to figure it out today b/c that shit I had bought after a couple other jackets had been failing me was EXPENSIVE.
Problem with these rain clothings is the pfas forever chemicals used to waterproof them
Don't wash in normal detergent , rather
Use a wash in recoat product such as those produced by Nikwax or Graingers regularly and you'll be fine .
I made that mistake nd I’m wondering if I can recoat it or something
@@el_nano5316
Wash with pure soapflakes solution or the branded wash products, along with a couple of extra rinses.
Use a wash-in or spray on re-proofer, tumble on low heat ONLY, and you’ll be sorted.
Surface wetting does not mean it's not waterproof. Goretex is still waterproof without the DWR.
Would the RAINS brand be permanent? It’s made out of PU and rubber
The problem is the material not being able to breathe. It's not a new issue. Rubber rain jackets have ALWAYS stopped rain but not allowed the exhaust of vapor from inside which makes you wet on the inside. In this case, the video is about internal moisture not being able to leave. It's not about the material losing it's waterproof quality. Gore-tex breaths right up until it "wets out". DRW prevents wetting out.
All jackets use DWR even Gore-Tex
It’s good to know that an outdoor gear company has absolutely no clue how technology, that they probably sell, actually works. 🙄
If the DWR on your rain jacket wearing off means the jacket is no longer waterproof you were never wearing a rain jacket, you were wearing a windbreaker.
What?
You can buy dwr spray
I love all the things you teach us!
👍
What about the materials they use in umbrellas?
What about it? Umbrellas just need to be impermeable, not breathable.
After getting many i think my columbia watertight II is really good.have a blue in L which is kinda big for me but was quite effective on my hikes even in cold weather
Have ordered an M in orange just today❤
Very nice!
what size would you recommended for a man 6 feet 80kgs 42 chest and 31 waist?
You can fix this by spraying seam sealer on it
but wouldn't that affect the breathability?
So which jacket is permanent waterproof ?
mine. the one i am making
nothing is totally permanent.
GORE-TEX it is then!
That's also coated with chemicals
@@zeez4178what's your point
The audience for this channel is intermediate to advanced hiker/long distance trekker- all of the videos are 101 first day stuff. Lol. And it’s because 101 backpacking is easier to film
Materials like wool are naturally waterproof and don't rely on a coating of waterproofing spray
Don’t be daft! Since when was processed wool “waterproof”?
You can’t look at a sheep, and conclude wool must be water resistant, because it doesn’t look like a drowned rat when it rains. That wool will have absorbed some moisture, it won’t be bone dry.
Must not have DWR in rain parka. My 30+ year old expedtion "weight" Gore-Tex parka does not leak.
That’s because it’s seam sealed & membrane backed. The water won’t be beading up, and rolling off, but absorbed into the face fabric, which will affect breathability.
Get yourself some wash-in Grangers Clothing Repel, tumble dry on low (for quickness) or use a hairdryer to heat bond the DWR. Once fully dry, your jacket will perform optimally again.
@@BoronAlloy Thanx - will get some and work on the seams. The jacket, hood, sleeves ... never let water in, and breathe.
The most waterproof item you can buy is a one piece leather jacket
The hell you don’t offer a solution? I don’t get people. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Goretex gang
goretex has entered the chat……
Nothing is Waterproof.Period.
Wrong… end of! 🤓
Myth #2: There is a myth nuber 2... there isn't.
Nah man waxed canvas looks too cool to wear nasty tech jackets
yeah but then its not breathable and you will sweat making you cold
Don’t forget your absorbing the chemicals and disrupting your hormones.
The dwr is on the outside and liquid doesn’t go through
