      Yes. And honestly, the price he got for that paint job seemed super reasonable to me. I mean, given today’s economy, and that he is living in one of the most expensive markets in the country. That’s a lot of house to paint, and taking out and reinstalling all of those windows is a lot of work, but still cheaper and more resourceful than replacing them all.

    Don't forget that you do not need to decorate every corner / every wall. It is good to have some empty space / breathing room. If you decorate every corner / wall it starts to look cluttered. Also, make sure there is room to walk in / out the doors and walking space between furniture.

    • @5cree
      @5cree Год назад +13

      Completely agree. Flow space for free movement is important for a relaxed feel and empty space can create an aesthetic just as much as a filled space can. The key is balance, but not always symmetrical, asymmetry can create interest and lead the eye to open spaces.

      Drew the color is dreamy, but I agree with the other comments about leaving some open space, I think a little less crockery on the lovely fireplace would be better. I know you love the pottery, but sometimes less is more. And go a little easy on the candlesticks, lol, you are a candlestick maniac. But you are getting better and better on your design skills. That ceiling that you did was amazing.

      Had I have seen this earlier, I also would’ve said flameless candles and I also would’ve said Luminara! They are the best! They are based on the design by the Imagineers, that made the candles for the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland. They typically come with a timer, so you can have them going anything between 4 to 10 hours a day. Make sure to get the outdoor ones - the interior ones are made of real wax. I also live in LA, and it does get killer hot - it will melt them.

    The new paint job is beautiful and yes to painting the rafters brown! Because you asked here are my PLANT SUGGESTIONS - In planters use native salvias, culinary sages, yarrow, creeping rosemary and native grasses. In large pots grow some smaller fruit trees like figs or kumquats.

  • @E4mj
    @E4mj Год назад +81

    Be careful putting plants in the pots that are sort of jug shaped - only put pots as wide as the hole at the top. Otherwise if you fill them with soil, the plant will eventually get root-bound, and because the opening is smaller than the rootball, you can't get them out to re-pot them. You can still do beautiful plants in these sort of pots, but you need to get the right type of plant, or have pots only as big as the opening.
    P.S. Your house looks STUNNING!

    I think the area by the trash cans would be really great with a long skinny bench! The color change is gorgeous! Since you are filling the courtyard with pots, the baby blue tile really sticks out like a sore thumb. Great idea to pick up a color from the inspiration tile in the middle. Maybe a terracotta type of red, similar to the red in the tile?
    You will regret the rattan chairs sitting where you need to traverse the trash cans. It will become an irritation to have to move them every week to pull out the trash. Maybe something thinner? A rustic bench that will hug the wall and not need to be moved?
    I’m a bit OCD when things don’t line up and throw off the symmetry. I adore the table, if you can not center it under the window due to losing seating due to the pillar, perhaps put the bench idea you had on that side and at least nudge the table so it at least aligns with the outside edge of the window instead of being just a few inches off? All of those pot are simply to die for! I hope your gardener is going to be doing the watering! I was raised in So Cal and the heat. Potted plants dry out so quickly because they can’t pull moisture from the surrounding ground.
    The colors you selected are spot on and so beautiful together. I love your idea of painting the underside beams to trick the eye into believing they are wood.
    I’ve NEVER commented on a post before but this courtyard is becoming the heart of the home. You will have so many wonderful hours spent here with friends, laughing and sharing life together.

    Drew, the paint colors are magnificent and make the beautiful architecture of your courtyard stand out. Paint the beams and under eaves a wood color. Please show us how to paint tiles in a tutorial. So many of us are stuck with ugly tile colors and just don’t know where to start or how much work and money it costs to do. Your restoration work is always impeccable and I would trust all of your efforts on painting the tile. Respectfully, Two suggestions. Don’t overcrowd that amazing space. When you have a party, leave room for your guests to walk around comfortably. The statue in the fountain doesn’t suit your aesthetic. Your house seems Spanish or Mission in style. The goddess needs to go. Think about a fountain made from one of your massive, glorious pots surrounded by terra cotta tile with green accents that complements the color of your home. You are the most inspirational designer on RUclips. Your end results are just MAGIC! Thank you for your creativity and engaging personality.

    The more I think about it, the more I think leaving the fountain blue is the best choice. In design the eye needs resting spots, which would be the water/blue fountain in the center, plus it's more calming and in character with the garden feel that plants will add. I'd keep the fountain, just polish it up nicely and make it a lovely feature.

    RE: PLANTS I went back to the image of the plants that were originally there, that you liked. They are all easily identifiable: fire stick succulent, aeonium black succulent, geraniums, etc. Go back to the image, select what you like, take the photo to a nursery...easy! The plants looked happy in that location, so you won't really have to worry if they'll be a good fit. Most of those plants only need to be watered once a week. You may want to add some bougainvillea, maybe some interesting cacti.

    Not surprised by the cost of painting your home. It looks great! Yes, paint the tile. As for the area near the garbage cans, a long, narrow planter with tall plants to add it bit of privacy there might be nice. The color of the window frames and the trunk of the large tree in the court yard match perfectly! It all looks so very beautiful and as always, you've chosen the perfect colors and brought in gorgeous items!

      Drew, I would vote "yes" to painting the rafters. Not sure if the plants on the trellises are bougainvillea but, if not, it would be great to include this beautiful plant somewhere. Nice! Yes, paint the eaves and also paint the wood ceilings and beams in the covered areas the dark brown, not the lighter brown you used around the windows. It will feel cozy, it will emphasize the mission style of the home and it will look GREAT!!! I also think rust would look way better than the baby blue currently on the tiles. Keep the chairs around the table. Benches are SO uncomfortable, they're difficult to climb over, they're always too far or too close to the table and aren't easily adjusted. I like the idea of a chandelier with candles, but it's not practical outdoors because wind will blow out the candles.

    Painting the rafter tails brown will give you an effect very similar to a dentil molding. I know you liked that effect in your living room, so you might like it on the exterior. 1. Coolest tree for near the house = fig tree (mediterranean feel, exotic leaf shape). 2 Put those great lanterns up on the top stair landing or move the vases elsewhere (might be too many same-sized things there). 3. Mask the trash cans with a piece of black fence that can be easily pull up and out on Trash Day. 4. You cannot have one "outcast" friend sitting outside of the sitting area: switch the 2 open-back lighter chairs for opposite the couch and the 2 larger chairs can go in the courtyard. 5. Use that long dining table in the courtyard to work on every day and instead find an iron table pedestal and put a plank oval top on it for use with the ice cream chairs. It'll be easier for people to get in and out of that area - corner table legs are very restrictive especially after you've had a couple drinks. You can put that Work Table on casters that can lock for when you're working. Maybe even put it across the trash can zone to mask it.

    The new color is beautiful! Two ideas? 1. What about a collaboration with Amanda from Planterina? She's really quirky and totally honest about what plants she successfully moves outside in the summer, and what she sends to the big garden in the sky. AND 2. FIELD TRIP!! Take us to the San Diego Zoo and the botanical garden for inspiration! But if you're just running to a box store I think you will do best with sturdy low maintenance, water holding plants like ZZ's, Snake plants and bird of paradise. Without a drip system the grasses won't hold up as long if you forget to water them.

    Paint the fountain tile a COBALT BLUE.. would give a dramatic pop of contrast. You don't want too much of the same color palate. Less pottery & more negative space. Add some miniature fruit trees, climbing vines - trumpet vines, bogonvilla(spelling?) - native to California, California poppies, Jasmine - very fragrant in evenings, purple forsythia. Go for bright colors: oranges, red geraniums, bright pinks, purples. Classic spanish colors. Would be stunning & really show off the terracotta planters with tall grasses. No candle wax dripping on you or food and the barest of breeze will blow out the candles. Just my opinion ! 😎😁. I absolutely LOVE your house colors. As for what to put in the clay pots; a Meyer Lemon Tree, Fig, Hibiscus, Gardenia, Bougainvillea, Herbs, Ivy, Prickly Pear, or a mini Banana Tree - all can do very well in pots. Including; Italian Cypress Trees. Plus, of course small varieties of palm and/or papas grasses. Paint that wrought iron chair black to give it some pop and to balance the same color of the bistro set. Place the head statute on the rustic door table with a woven mat or tray or scarf used as a table runner underneath, and perhaps, some fat chunky candles along with it. Also, be on the search to find a iron etagere (paint it black, or house trim color, or terracotta?!?) to use as potting stand to hold outside eating/entertainment utensils/clay bowls/platters, etc.

    I would suggest to in your courtyard either 1. a red bougainvillea (San Diego) that you can train into a bush; 2. a young fruitless olive tree that can be potted; 3. a dwarf lemon or orange tree; 4. various types of petunias in colors and sized that you can either sit them on the pots or hang them; or, 5. consider doing some edible landscape where you pot mediterranean herbs around the courtyard (rosemary, lavender, thyme, oregano). Not only would an herb garden goes with well with earth tones, your courtyard would have an amazing aroma!
    Oh, and don't plant anything directly into any of your beautiful pots, use a fabric planter (SmartPot or something like it) to minimize damage to your pots and give the plants a better chance to thrive.

    Love the white walls - so much cooler for the Cal sun. Paint the light blue tiles to the terracotta colour. Then if the darker blue doesn't look right you can pick another colour from the detailed tiles to paint those - maybe the lemon colour. Maybe some remote controlled puk lights in the lanterns would be good. Would be a shame to not have them illuminate at night. Suggestion for plant ideas - visit a local nursery. You don't need to buy there, but you will get ideas of what will grow in your area and look good in the courtyard. They gave you the gardener's info - I had to go back and listen again because I thought you said they gave you the gardener LOL That wall near the trash cans looks like it needs some greenery up/down the wall. Maybe long narrow pots with trellises that climbers could grow up, or long narrow pots on the top of the wall with trailing plants growing down.

    You can really appreciate the architectural style with the paint you chose.

    Your courtyard looks very elegant and has a wonderful “feel” to it. Two things that you might consider. First, center the little round blacktable in front of the window. It would make a huge difference. Also, given the style of the home, palms would be a wonderful choice to include in the courtyard and certainly add to the elegance. You have really created such an outstanding space. Enjoy!

    Beautiful color choice for the paint. If you put an orange tree in that large pot, will look great but the orange blossom will smell amazing!!!

    I love the new paint color. Yes, paint the tile.
