I think I would put a removable countertop over the washer and dryer. In the event of some type of mishap, water or otherwise, you’re going to want to have a quick access to the appliances. Years ago, when my dishwasher died and needed replacement, I discovered that the original dishwasher was impossible to remove without almost removing the kitchen countertop.

I love doing laundry because it always brings me back to the moment, hanging laundry is kinda meditative to me. You could even make a little ceremony out of it; put your phone on silent and in another room, maybe some nice music on, maybe even light a candle or something. And then just take your time and treat every piece of clothing/fabric with care and mindfulness. I know that sounds crazy, but it's just a little 10 minutes of calming down for me.

while you're at it, put a shut off valve there for the water. so many flood accidents happen around washers - when you're gone for a few days, always shut off the water to the washer. what could be useful and you could do it beautifully, is a "counter" along that big wall, perpendicular to the washer/dryer - but one that can lie flat against the wall when not in use, and when needed, can fold out to use for folding or perhaps additional space when you need to "line" dry fabrics. It could also serve as another space to use when entertaining. I can't wait to see the progression. Also, because it's a small laundry area, I'd install a brass "pull down" clothes bar that can be used when you're putting your clothes on hangers or that need to dry on a hanger - do it up high above that pull down "counter" I mention above. Again, it could be used to dry flowers, garlic, etc. Always looking forward to your vlogs. Hugs!

When you showed the storage cabinets you were thinking of, it reminded me of a cabinet I have. We don't have much money to spend, so we bought a gun cabinet at the thrift store for $20. I took out the gun display parts and installed shelves to make it a book cabinet. I painted it dark green with spray paint, believe it or not, and after painting I sanded it to the wood in key spots and rubbed the whole thing down with paste wax. The wax dries to a beautiful finish and adds dimension to the color--you'd never guess I'd used spray paint. It has glass doors, which right now I've covered from the inside by taping some (thrifted) wallpaper in the frame, but I can easily remove that if I want to display things.

I love the tile, the floor will get dusty and dirty with lint and grout is so hard to clean, the way you laid the tile will make it easy to maintain. I think the floor is too beautiful to cover with a runner, plus a rug will collect a lot of lint and dust and it would always be dirty. A counter over a washer/dryer looks really nice and adds function but it makes moving the appliances for cleaning and maintenance difficult. I suggest having the counter on a hinge or somehow removable so you can easily access the back of the appliances. I absolutely love the ironing board in the wall, I used to own a house built in 1920 that had a built in ironing board and I used it all the time, so convenient, I'm glad you're not taking it out.

I would put another slab of countertop and cabinets in the cutout of that room where you wanted the hutch for more storage and tabletop laundry folding. and then open shelving or something so when you walk into the laundry room, it's nice to walk into.

I think get rid of the uppers and make a nice patterned vintage spainish tile back splash with a solid spainish tile counter. The have open shelving with hanging space (could be nice to bring in the a brass bar like in the kitchen for nice continuity 😊) and nice baskets above the washer dryer instead. Then have a larger folk style cabinet for your things. A mix of tall storage for brooms etc, shelves and drawers. You can even diy it as a built in so you don’t have to dry wall that hole😅

I hope your next counter top is removable in case you need access again. I think butcher block stained a brown that compliments your kitchen cabinetry would look nice. I also think you should place a few primitive stools along the wall. Folk art cabinetry would look amazing. Good luck. Loved your screams. Scream queen.

A rod that folds down when not in use. The rod usually has gaps taken out of the rod for hangers. Sometimes wood, sometimes a metal like feature sold where doorknobs are sold.

Drew., get some Teflon furniture movers to put under the corners of the furniture you want to slide. It makes it easier, plus it saves floors from being scratched.

    Hi Drew,
Always tile or lay flooring underneath your appliances otherwise they are very difficult to pull out to repair and / or replace. If the appliances can’t be pulled out the flooring has to be removed.

One thing that baffles me and I also find amusing is the fact that wet areas in America never seem to have floor drains (floor wastes) to take away accidental overflows, like the flooding of the laundry floor, or overflowing a bath etc. It's pretty much mandatory where I live in residential buildings.

I would make those cabinets look build in by just covering the top part going up to the ceileing. It would showcase the arch. Right now it looks like somebody squished something rectangle into something round.
    The tile is amazing.

I would take down one upper cabinet and stack the washer dryer, add a laundry sink to the side with the other upper cabinet. Then I'd put narrow base and upper cabinets on the wall next to the built in ironing board with the counter top in an L around the sink and over the base cabinets.

Love the floor! My two suggestions are, If you use lower cabinets I would bring the depth flush with the wall and have a stone countertop for extra space to fold clothes. You could add floating shelves above. I would consider adding a rod for hanging clothes either below the floating shelves or to the bare wall by the laundry units with a floating shelf above it. You could also DIY a tall built in cabinet that is less deep on the top half with the bottom half extended out to be flush with the wall and add a narrow countertop. Not sure if you have any stone left from the kitchen? Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

What about doing two-tone walls in laundry? Like a lighter shade at top and several shades darker at bottom? Since it's long and narrow (including area down the stairway) it would really accentuate the space, making it look like corridors in some old Mission or villa, especially with a rustic cabinet and large pottery vessels in there. You could even hang some vintage baskets from ceiling, add iron wall sconces on walls, drape a cool woven textile across window and it would look like a narrow passage thru an old world market, somewhere in the Mediterranean...

How about putting a long drop leaf table along the wall that could be pulled up to fold clothes then lowered when not needed.

  • @lizabethnichols8229

I really like the tile without the grout look. Anything that looks historical and European appeals to me, and you have a lot of that in this house. YES to a furniture piece. I have a long narrow table covered with bottles, boxes, all kinds of house cleaning items, etc. but I don't have a good configuration in my laundry room. Again, I prefer the images that look rustic vs the detailed hand painted ones you showed as examples. It's going to be beautiful. One thing as a homeowner and someone who's done many loads of laundry: have a place to sort and fold in there, maybe a drop down top similar to the wall ironing board, which likely will never get used. My personal issue with doing laundry is hauling warm laundry that gets wrinkled while being tossed into baskets to move around, and finding someplace that's good to sort and fold, which currently is my bed even though I have a laundry room (too narrow). I love great design, but always remember that function is a big part of that.
