HI Joy, There is a ruffling foot (C18) that gathers and attaches the ruffle to the flat fabric. But for garment construction, I do it as a 2-step process. It takes a few extra minutes but is worth it. No need for a ruffling foot. Here's a link to my tip Clip on how needle tensions affect gathering: ruclips.net/video/Dy-eH14_sfM/видео.html. You can make the fabric as poofy as possible by increasing needle tension settings. Let me know if I can answer any other questions and thanks for watching!
That looks so nice! If I were to use a woven fabric, would I adjust the settings differently, and would the stay tape still be necessary? Thank you for your tips.
Hi Terri, you wouldn’t need stay tape on woven fabric. But definitely test our settings (needle tension, etc.) on scrap fabric. start and end with at least a 4” thread chain in case you need to loosen gathers to fit your project dimensions. Let me know if if you need more help and thanks for watching!
Hi Emma, Yes, the looper tensions were all on the default settings of 4.0. The only tension changes were on the needle threads. Great Question and thanks for watching!
I can't change the tension setting on my serger. It's automatic. But I would like the gathers to be fuller like on the top sample you show, or even a bit more than that. What can I do? Thanks 😊
Hi Monika, Set your Differential feed to 2 and stitch length on the longest (probably 4.0). Gather the edge as usual. Then lock your knife and stitch right over the first line of stitching. If you don't lock the knife, it will trim off the first stitching line and defeat the purpose. Try it and see what you think. You can also reduce the DF on the 2nd run if you don't want super tight gathers.Let me know if you need more help and thanks for watching!
Hi Gail, thank you for this great information. I have bought that stay tape from you and it works wonderfully. My question, though is what tension setting would you use to achieve 6 if you have BL Ovation? It is usually on A for serging so would I use B or C? TYIA
Hi Lida, The Ovation and Triumph and other Babylock models have the Stitch Selector A, B, C, D. Those are not tension adjustment settings, but rather are a thread delivery system. If you think of the letters as grades on a test, "A" will deliver the most thread per stitch, and "D" will deliver the least. (One exception to tension adjustment is the "D" setting. It will also increase the lower looper tension for a rolled hem. stitch.) There is no way to adjust tensions on the machines with Stitch Selector levers. To tighten gathers, use a 4-thread overlock stitch, Stitch Selector on "A" and differential feed on 2. Stitch the fabric edge. Then lock the knife and stitch a second time right over the first line of stitching. It will give you nice full gathers. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this informational video!
Thanks for watching, Joanne!
Thank you dear Gail. You are the best.
Thanks Marta!
Thanks Gail! Those are beautiful gathers 😍
Thanks Kim. It’s always little things that make a big difference.
Great video, clearly explained how to gather difficult knit-fabrics. Thank you for this video
Hi Caroline, glad the video was helpful and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
As usual, this is a GREAT video and so very informative. Thanks so much for such great tips on all things serging! Joy

So helpful! Thanks!
@@momofkings1 you’re welcome and thanks for watching!
Thanks for your many informative videos, Gail. Are you using a gathering foot?
Hi, I used the clear foot for the camera, but would recommend the shirring foot for gathering. Thanks for watching!

On the second piece, were the loopers still on tension 4?
