Great tip! I am getting a bodhran for my birthday and was practicing with all sorts of things (a pencil, my notebook, etc.). After I saw your tip, I went down to the local Dollar General and bought some bamboo skewers and rubber bands and made my own practice tipper. I am using a practice pad I got for Christmas a couple of years ago to practice on. Thank you SO much for your time and talent. I am so excited about playing this fascinating drum! Peace be with you, OD
Excellent Michelle! I live in a high rise and this will allow me to play at any time. I also wanted to share another great practice bodhran..... An empty pizza box works great too! I did this when I was on vacation and was missing my drum. You can even place a folded towel inside to change the sound. Just make sure to hide it from the maid if you're in a hotel so it doesn't get thrown away!
I would never have thought of using these materials but you are right and they work FANTASTICALLLY!!! Now i can practice anytime anywhere A LOT quieter. THANK YOU
Michelle, that was awesome never thought every day home products could be used as a practice drum . i use your lesson plan very helpful being visually impaired i listen for your up down method thanks Shawn
Awesome videos Michelle. I bought a tipper today and spent the last 2 hours practicing with your videos, on a clipboard LOL. I've been a competitive piper in Ontario for many years and can't wait to buy a drum and keep learning and practicing.
Michelle, Great video, I've been wanting to figure out how to practice without making a racket in my apartment. The clipboard is fantastic...can't wait to go out and find some skewers.
This is a VERY good video for those of us just starting out with this wonderful instrument. My drum/tipper is on it's way and I have been trying to practice with various things without success. This is a great help. I am still trying to find my comfort zone in holding the 'tipper'. Well, not so much as the holding of it, but how to hold and use it correctly to the drum. I suppose time and practice will make it more natural feeling. Thanks again for this vid!
Thank you very much for the videos. I just went out with my pearent to get a bodhrán for a Christmas pressent so up intill then I need something to practis on so seeing your video has helped me find ways of practising up intill Christmas. Thanks alot! :)
thanks for the video! Well, i have a small bodhrán that i bought back then on 2006 in Ireland at the Guinness factory, i know it is just a souvenir, but while my real bodhrán arrives home i am using that lil one, is kinda hard to practice in an 8 inch bodhrán but i think i am having some progress thanks again for all the great videos!
Thank you for showing how to make your own tipper, I almost bought one that kost 29 euro. And I can practice now even late at night. keep up the good work and the video's I love them.
howye ,ive been practising at work for a while now ,with a beater and clipboard as you suggested excellent with a jig or reel playing on the old cd player in the background ,thanks for the videos ,dan, scotland
I have spent all night learning how to play from watching your videos. Thankyou so much. And just as I was about to go to bed, I came across this one! What a gem! I could even try this one with my class at school. I think they would really enjoy it. Also, it means that wherever I am, I know that I can pop into the local supermarket and come out with a drum! Thanks again. jmag57 in Wandiligong
Thank you Michelle, very useful information as very often I was thinking how to practice a rhythms while my drum is far away from me.... So, time to go shopping :)
Just a variation.... Folks are off to buy their padded clipboards and that is a superior idea, that could be taken to work unrecognized, until you start 'wacking' it with your stick. (chuckle) If you are looking for almost free for around the house/apartment, consider a large size pizza box... a little duct tape and maybe some interior stuffing (old socks, rags ??) to get the volume that won't wake the kids or grumpy neighbor. Modifications abound (I had one with a hole cut in the back for my hand and if you wear it out... well, in the U.S., pizza boxes are readily available... with some 'yum factor' involved. I enjoy your video presentations very much. You make it easy to learn. Thanks!
Wow, this is great! I really like how enthusiastic you explain all this... just watching your videos leaves me in a very good mood, it kind of makes me happy! :-) Thanks for uploading all these helpful videos, they're a great gift! I think I'll give the "bodhran" a try, this cheap practice pad is a good opportunity... Oh, but in your videos - I'd leave out this psychedelic intro... ;-)
Thanks for posting this! I've been looking into playing one of these but was afraid to lay down the money for one and find out it wasn't for me. Now I can at least get a feel for it.
wonderful idea - and now to practice practice - but I do think there might be some pubs where the clipboard could actually become a favourite instrument -
You probably already know the answer to this by now lol but honestly, you can muffle the bodhran enough with your hand behind the skin so it really won't make much loud noise if you don't want it to :)

Hmmm I can use that home made tipper as a different sound..lol Great job.
I forgot to ask, before I spend the money, can I use a regular drum muter on my bodhran? They sell them at Amazon.com?
My new years resolution to play the bodhran 😊
wonderful idea - and now to practice practice - but I do think there might be some pubs where the clipboard could actually become a favourite instrument -
