They can harvest the oak(1.33)😂 I know you mean cork 😂😂 Would love to turn one. Only here in South Africa well no one have and if they do won't share. Love your show. You are such a inspiration. David (Saint Art)
We lived on a Cork Tree farm in Portugal with grazing sheep beneath. They numbered the trees from 0-9 and harvested the cork bark sheets once every 10 years. I didn't know they had cork oak in the US. Lovely turning with fantastic contrasting colors. Bravo.
I really did not think this piece was going to be very interesting until the finish went on. The finished piece is very interesting with the dark ring between the bark and the heart wood. ❤
Cool Phil...and so is the turning 😂. The cork makes this piece and not turning it away was the best look from where I am watching. If we get the Internet back I will watch on a bigger screen than my cell phone . Then it will look even better. I sure miss standing in front of my lathe 😢. Watching you turn helps though. Stay warm, Gary
Agree, Gary, it's all about the cork/bark. Amazing stuff! I feel for you, buddy! You will be glad to get back to the lathe and your audience will be glad, too! We miss seeing you there! But, take your time and get it right. I don't wanna see you limping about for the next 30 years! 😊
Another beautiful piece of art, Phil! Congratulations! I’d set that on my shelf ‘for all to enjoy’ ANY time!!! And I love how the end grain(s) of the bowl look like the gills of a mushroom. Very unique!
I love the dark ring between the wood and bark. If you filled the bowl with water, it would look like a lake in a rocky terrain. 😉 Thanks for another great piece.
That's great, Phil. I'm glad you left a larger base so there was no worry about it tilting. Also, with that grain there's no creatures jumping out at us. Bill
I just love all the different woods I’ve learned about and your wonderful imagination! This is a very cool bowl and I wish I could feel the cork! The wood is a gorgeous rich color. Terrific turning Phil. Thanks! Stay warm!
It's easy to see why you like cork oak. The contrast in colors is beautiful. Not much for grain beauty but the bark and wood contrasts are awesome. You choice of minimal turning is great too. Some things need only a little help. We'll done Phil you do not disappoint.
Howdy Phil. I got a laugh out of your reference " Looks like Shirley Temples curls ". I don't know what you're drinking but can I have a couple of shots. LMAO. Cork Oak is a fascinating tree as far as sustainability goes. I had no idea it was such a beautiful wood. I must have missed your previous cork videos. Another fine piece of work from you sir. I noticed when you were showing it at the end of the video that it does look like Shirley's curls when you stand it on the one end. LOL. And I think we should give Scottcates below a big hand for his use of the word " medullary ". How often does anyone get to use that in conversation? Kudos Scott!!! Take care Phil and keep turning. Bill Riley.
Hi Phil. Hope you have a fireplace for all the broken branches that fell during your wind storm. This year is broken-branch winter in our neck of the woods. That's fur sure. Our ice is finally thick enough to walk out on. The ice-fishers are out, with there wind-protecting tents. Can't wait for a windless, sunny day, to strap on the snow shoes, grab the pole and go for a walk out on the lake. Cork oak. Had never heard of it. ....Why do I think that cork grows in Italy? Must have heard that at one point. Or, it that violin wood? Can't remember now. Anyhoo, your turn tonight is sooooo cool! Your choice of what was up and what was down was a surprise to me. Your ability to "advance-see" a shape in a block of wood always amazes me. Nnnnneat colour!

Unusual but AWESOME!! You learn something new every day, I didn't know that CORK came from wood! Great results because of your talent!! Thanks Phil!!❤❤
Hi Phil Very rare wood, only seems to grow in areas around the Mediterranean. You are lucky to have people give/send it to you and it is appreciated by your comments to them. The bark on this piece is truly remarkable and as always you bring out the best. Take care Bob
This piece of cork oak is very interesting. I saw these trees in Portugal but didn't realize they grew in the USA. You turned it into a beautiful piece that will look good on someone's mantle. Thanks Phil
I think it’s lovely absolutely gorgeous and very very different. I love the way they bark has that dark ring just before you get to the real wood :-) the contrast in colours is something I really do like. I’ve only ever seen Cork bark without the wooden underneath it and they use it in Fish tanks for lizards and snakes to hide under :-). I’m with you all the way on this. It’s fantastic. I love it.
It almost looks like a slab of cake with a thick layer of coffee icing and a big scoop from the middle. Right up there as one of your best cobber. Cheers Deno.
I really like the silvery gray wood. The curls on the cork is cool. Being I had natural curls growing up.😊 I saw a peaceful 9:50 face in the bottom of the bowl so intriguing
I like that you could stand the piece on end on a shelf. You could also have the bottom showing, that turned out really cool! The whole thing is nice, great job!
Lucky you to get ahold of cork oak! It's beautiful wood. Such a rich deep color. And the bark is fascinating. As usual, you brought out the best in it.
Phil , what an interesting piece ! I love the dark wood and even the grain is interesting , Great job Phil . You just have the knack ! Stay safe in these storms .
A beautiful piece of art sir, stunning. The cork live edge is outstanding. Think you choice wisely on the finish, very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing you work, or fun with us. I enjoy your channel very much, like the format. 🌿 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
My partner and I worked in France for several years and in the area were cork oak plantations. They would date the tree after they stripped the bark so they would know when it might be ready to harvest it again, true sustainability. Lovely piece of work Phil x
Very nice. Liked your comment about the wind; live about 60 miles north of you so well-versed in living with the high winds and cooking before the power goes out. thanks.
Howdy Phil!! Great job bringing out the natural beauty of the Cork Oak. You educated me this time. You always amaze me. Keep up the enjoyable videos and best of health to you!

Now THIS one I like the bark on. 🤣😜 No need to apologize for the shape or bark. Nice job on the turning. Keeping it simple worked well with this particular cut of wood. Love how the wood went dark, and the bark mellowed out with the finish on it. And more shapes to see in the bark. More snow here this morning, but finally turning soft for melting. Hope yours is melting and the power did not go out in this high winds you had.

The texture, color, and grain pattern between the heartwood, sapwood and bark on this piece is just lovely.
