Keep in mind that systemic racism was directed at my black descendants from the core. Not saying that no one else has suffered at the hands of racism, but as a black 71year old woman from Indianapolis, Indiana, home of the KKK in Elwood, we as black people were the absolute target. To this day, I have never and will not ever visit Elwood. Excellent podcast, one of my favorites. Thank you Michael and Mary!!!

I would add that what has happened and is still happening to the Native American population is something that needs to be included in the difficult conversations we need to have. Unfortunately, and weirdly, what happened to the people who were HERE...whose land this belonged to originally...is almost always left out. It's also a reckoning that needs to be addressed.

I am constantly bringing up this point in Many Conversations. Terrible things have happened and are still happening to Many peoples but the Indigenous Peoples, First Nations seem to always be forgotten. They were pushed aside, enslaved, murdered, restricted, hated and like Mexican people were here when everyone else came to the United States. It is time that honest history be taught in All school, not banned, hidden, ignored and lied about. We need to learn about all Racism and if you don't know about Industrial schools or Indian Boarding Schools and the government/church mandate to "kill the Indian in the child", then you are missing a huge amount of history and present day problems.

Thank you both! I was in high school in the early 1970's, and in our English class a Japanese-American classmate wrote a story about her mother being Interred at Tanforan Detention Center during World War II. I was angry with her and said They would have TOLD us about that in school if it were true!! At the age of 16 I began to Question Authority, as they used to say. I was devastated that I had been betrayed by my education. It is a heartbreak that people on the Right are trying to do this now. Thank you for this great discussion.

I assumed people of color wouldn’t want to know me; very understandable in my growing mind. The full context of race in America was not taught in the public schools I attended. Then came George Floyd, and the groundswell of understanding broke over the country. For me, it was profoundly freeing. Also, my family knew Freedom Riders and friends and personal teachers of Martin Luther King Jr. I consider that very fortunate. When Emmett Till's destroyed face in a photograph showed up in Jet Magazine with his ruined, destroyed face so courageously shown to the world by hus mother, I had a meltdown, begged my Mom to let me go on the Freedom Rides. But I was only 14 years old, a girl, not much older than Till. Like Mary said, I “owned it”; and still working on it 30 years later-but I own it and every time I stand up to racism it gets better. The people who need to hear this pod cast will never hear it… that is a huge problem. It’s up to those of us who own it, to not let racism pass.

What a good discussion on a very deep level...we need more of this. I think about 40% of our society (at least) does not want to face that our moral compass as a nation is totally out of whack. We have to look at a very basic level at what we think is right and wrong in how we treat our fellow human beings. And I want all kids to look at books that discuss history openly...none of this banning books nonsense. The more you censor ideas, the more people will actively seek out that very information.

Sadly, many Latinos take the bait for ego, power and authority. It's kinda easy in that community because racism and colorism is fully embedded.

Your open and informative talk made me realize that there is much more in play behind the scenes at this point. We do need to make it right...for everybody. How? I am not sure. I do see that we are going backwards, but we need to be open to being informed and fight against the inequality, especially those who are trying to perpetuate the old ways. We MUST talk about it.
THIS talk is the type of educating we all need because it ties together the little snipets of knowledge that do not make sense unless the entire picture is given.

Indeed. As a Scandinavian, I get really tired of Americans calling us socialists. We're not, nor have we ever been. We're a social democracy. We actually rank above to far above the US on being capitalist, being a good place to start a business, ppl having more money to spend etc etc etc. Not to mention, that we're always at the top of the freedom and happiness indexes.
But being an accountant, I also try to explain to Americans, that its not just the human thing to do, its actually very beneficial economically. Coz free, happy ppl, who do not have to worry about getting sick, coz they will be taken care of, who have many worker and consumer rights and protection, so they dont have to worry all the time, who have the free time and money to be with their families, travels, whatever - they make much better workers! And they contribute to the economy with their work AND with their spending, they keep the economic wheels turning. Theres actually plenty of studies, that show, that countries with higher taxes, who use those taxes to pay for ppls healthcare, education, proper pensions etc, and who have a high level of regulations and protections, have a better and healthier economy too.
But far too often I just get "but 'Murica!!" thrown back at me, coz apparently nothing counts, if its not the American way. U guys do some things really well. But theres also a whole lot, u could learn, if u were willing to admit, that ur country isnt the best at everything, and if ur willing to look at other countries and learn, both from our successes and our failures.

They are way more “we want to live with love and freedom. I thought by the time I was 57 things would changed with how we treated each other. Thank you both for this important conversation. From my perspective as Hispanic woman who experienced childhood discrimination: we spoke Spanish, we were a large family, we were farm workers, our skin color was shades of brown, we were not allowed to live in certain neighborhoods. The experience was traumatic primarily because the people who treated us as though we were so different from the “acceptable visual people” was painful.
Yet, within the confines of our family we were taught to appreciate with pride who we were and what we contributed to world in a diverse society. We were taught to be forgiven of those who treated us with disrespect - as my father would say - those people are ignorant to who we really are - we are the people who help build strong communities.
On assimilation: this was taught in the schools - only speak English, wear the right clothes, shoes, and don’t eat beans and tortillas, oatmeal, etc!!! In other words, don’t be who we were - pretend to be like the acceptable people (blond, blue eyes, fair skin). Having brown skin, black hair, brown eyes was not the desirable way to look - so we were shamed and labeled as different!!!
Again, thank you for this important conversation!!!

In actuality, there is a double healing that the Latin community has to go through. All of what you described earlier PLUS repentance for the anti-African attitude that is perpetuated by the entire Latin American world.

An Amazing conversation, thank you both! Michael, when you spoke early on how you started to wonder if you were the only person who feels like this, I'm right there with you. The widespread unwillingness to talk about the race-based principles which lurk in essentially every corner of American society and legal/regulatory code often lead us to struggle to explain WHY our systems produce the results they do. But it only takes a few well-presented examples to finally see the patterns. Books like 'The Color Of Law" and "Caste" show in crystal clarity (for those of us without the lived-experiences) WHY a city council would rather demolish a public swimming pool then desegregate it. Or WHY a major political party would rather defund Medicare and Social Security then see them become easy, affordable and widely used by black people.
The climate crisis and the accompanying transformations that it is already forcing, provide the catalyst to reimagine all our systems and build more inclusive, equitable, and efficient versions to carry the future. It's humanity's greatest challenge to date, and America's greatest opportunity to date as well.
You're not alone. And from a millennial, and former Army officer, you both have my deepest respect.

Brilliant dialogue. All I can say is Yes and Amen. I am currently reading Jeff Sharlet's book" The Family." Early on the point is made that the Religious Whites that first immigrated to this continent held to the heresy that They were the New Israel, that He had finished His covenant with the Jews, and that this new land spread out before them was the New Promised Land. That was the basis for the justification of genocide of the indigenous populations, and the enslavement of kidnapped Africans, to build their structures. They considered themselves God's Chosen. That falsehood was the rack upon which the rest of our crimes hung on. That was the prevailing mindset of the Western Europeans that first settled in North America. The presumption and arrogance and ignorance was and is stunning. That it prevails four hundred plus years later is beyond shameful. It is willful ignorance. Until that myth is destroyed, the racial divide as well as Antisemitism will continue to devour us as a nation. We are, Mary, as you said, poised over a precipice. This is most serious. If this nation succumbs to Authoritarianism, there goes the rest of the world. That vision is horrifying. What ever differences between Republicans like Michael Steele and Democrats like Mary Trump needs to be put to the side for now. Of primary urgency is the preserve what little Democracy remains and build ftom there. We can sort out differences once the nation is well away from the brink of disaster. Thank you both for civil and intelligent interaction.

Michael won’t say this but he is not a republican. He is a true RINO.

This show is about the questions that matter. Smart and balanced altogether. I've been away from the news and opinion and yet this one was worth watching. Thanks to you both. Good level.

This was an interesting conversation - reminds me of the book that Cornell West and Tavis Smiley co-authored, The Rich and the Rest of Us, as well as the book by Upton Sinclair, The Jungle. My hope is that the new generation will not tolerate this type of behavior - and much needed change will be happening - like in the state of Tennesse. I am with them on the same train.
Thank you both for putting on this show, it is the first step - as a country this is a diaogue we should be having in each and every state. We can and should do better. After all, my freedoms are only as good as what yours are. The lesson that we learned from Hitler - today you are in danger, tomorrow it could be my turn - which group or socio-economic category will be next.

Unfortunately the lessons learned from WW2 and Hitler has not been learned by all and back in the 30's and 40's there were US people that actively believed in Hitler and followed Hitler and Now Fascism, white supremacy and Nazis are back and stronger than before. You will see many strong second amendment Maga cult followers are using the term Tyrannical Government because they believe this democrat government will strip them of their 2nd amendment right to bear all weapons and they believe they will hand to go to war about it.

This is such an important conversation! Mary makes a great point when she explains the part of human psychology that turns the oppressed into the oppressor! It's fascinating and horrible at the same time.

Michael, you weren't my favorite when you were Lt. Governor of Maryland, but I respect and like you so much when you fought back against your splintered and non-democratic party. I applaud you with much love. Mary Trump as your guest is just awesome. From a fan and a Marylander living in Upper Montgomery County Maryland.

I LOVED this show. Having Mary on the show and the topic was an eye-opener. And so many have responded with what I honestly can mirror their sentiments too.We all got to come/stand together and fight this current political (crazy upside down) environment. But what got me.........."the man that goes to the funeral with his 40 and leaves looking for his next date", I was rolling with that one. Great show Sir Michael!
