You're right, Americans would ask for the manager when something isn't right with their order. When I visited the States and asked for the manager, my German friends got really embarrassed. It is a cultural thing. Slang is a challenge. Nobody teaches you to talk that way in school. Also an expression like "you're good?" can have so many different meanings. Understanding the context is very important. Thanks for teaching patiently and explaining your culture.
I'v been learning english on my own... in Duolingo, watching your videos etc. I'm 17 years old. Soon I'm going to enter at college and I will study English .... I hope keeping learning many languages because that's my dream.... ; )

Hi Gabby. I'm Brazilian and here in Brazil, we don't really smile for everybody. Thinking about it, it'll be kind of weird or even creepy if someone that I don't know just smile for me. By the way, some people could see it in the wrong way. But the truth is: it's cute, sweet. It should be more common in the whole world to smile for another person, even you don't know them and said the common greetings (good morning, afternoon, evening). About to be direct, it's a wonderful thing in my opinion. No circles. Straight to the point. Of course, nobody needs to be rude and some subjects are sensitive, but........ Sometimes I keep walking in circles to say something that has to be said and a lot of people really do that here and, by the way, sometimes we don't even say what we need or think. When I traveled to Paris in 2014, for example, and I hadn't even started to study English I couldn't speak very well, so I usually started saying "Sorry, I can't speak English very well..." I don't do it anymore. I'm learning and it's ok to make mistakes and I probably made mistakes in this comment. It's part of learning. I enjoy/love so much your videos!!!!

I suppose compared to some more indirect cultures (as opposed to perhaps more dynamic/passionate cultures), Americans are more direct, speak up more, and ask to speak to the manager more, but it seems to me that in general, the majority of us don't usually do these things. Even if you look at television, where people are unrealistically candid to the point of having screaming fights with co-workers, we see lots of references to people being uncomfortable sending their food back, asking for the manager, and giving frank replies if someone might be upset, and in those situations we see other characters often being embarrassed by these behaviors. It may depend on what part of the U.S. too, and I know there are plenty of people who don't care what people think about them, but I think most of us do care. I wouldn't tell someone if I didn't like their shirt, unless they hadn't bought it yet. I probably wouldn't ask to speak to the manager unless it was a really big deal. But I do sometimes send my food back, but I'm polite about it. (I think the best way to tell if people are decent is how they treat service people and animals.)
I think it is funny that you say english speakers are direct. Because as a german I have got this feedback so often form native english speakers that we germans seem to be so offensive because we are so direct.

I appreciate your comment! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment!
I think it is funny that you say english speakers are direct. Because as a german I have got this feedback so often form native english speakers that we germans seem to be so offensive because we are so direct.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
