Im going to start gym climbing. The gym Im going to join says I can use whatever belay device Im comfortable with, but I will be tested with the device Im going to use. I have never used a belay device, in the Marines we used a carabiner and a munter hitch. So I would like to get a device that is safe, and ease of use, and, work good outdoors as well. One device to become proficient and comfortable with. What do you recommend? thank you
Gym climbing is really fun and I'm excited for you! I really like the Grigri or Birdie because they have extra safety features and it's super easy to use when the rope is loaded into the device. It's pretty different from a carabiner and hitch. I actually made a video about belaying with a Grigri for Top-Rope climbing that might be a good start for you - however, nothing beats in-person instruction so if your gym offers it, I'd recommend that you actually take a belay class :) ruclips.net/video/mBTUuYeesVs/видео.html
Lean back and make tension to guide the rope through the pilot. If you had a quote habit of safety... You let your hand go off the break end to fix your mask. Obviously not. It's not the device it's your technique.
Thanks for your comment, I'll have to try leaning back more to see if I feel comfortable with that. It's probably just something I have to get used to. As for adjusting the mask, I'd agree you need to keep safety at the forefront of your mind while belaying. Luckily, in this situation, the climber was on the ground putting weight on the rope for the demonstration so no one was at risk, but that isn't clear to the viewers watching this video so thank you for pointing it out.
Welcome to the world of RUclips. Loved the way you didn't giggle and carry on, as one sees on some women-centred videos. The music was subtle (none needed), no silly cartoon inserts. I bought a Pilot today, and your's was the most imformative post. I will continue to watch you. From Australia.
I use it from 2 year and I like it
Found a brand new pilot on ebay for $25! Excited to try it. Thanks for the review :) Where are you located that climbing gyms are open?
Thanks for watching the video, I hope it was helpful. Utah (USA) currently has climbing gyms open and hopefully, they will remain open.
