Why People Hate Crash Bandicoot

- Crash Bandicoot is an amazing game, but it comes with some flaws that fans have criticized over the years. Three of the main criticisms include the game being too difficult, levels in the game being too long, and a lack of level variety.
And before people claim that I hate Crash Bandicoot, I don't. This video is meant to be fun and to discuss reasons why people hate the game, and to put these criticisms to the test to see if they hold any truth or not. Just because there are things to hate about a game does not mean the game is hated itself.
Please note in this video I will only be discussing the first three Crash Bandicoot games that were remastered in the 2017 Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Hope you enjoy the video!
The original Crash Trilogy used to be hard for me when I was younger... but they are easier now that I am older. I haven't played the new ones.
The remaster version of Crash 1 is easier than the original PS1 game. Since the controls are more refined and it's easier to control Crash mid-air, the lives don't reset when you turn the game off, you keep boxes when you die, you can save any time instead of only being able to save after a bonus or getting a clear gem, and the game hints about where to find the colored gems on the loading screens. I 100% it twice on the remaster, but never on the PS1 version and wouldn't dare to.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on Crash 1. To me, it feels the most ancient and primitive.
This thankfully doesn't carry over to the remake, but in crash 1 on Playstation tbe save system was like.... OBJECTIVELY bad. Basically in order to save, you needed to either complete a bonus stage for the first time, or get a gem for the first time. And in the original crash, rather than just a few handful of levels requiring you to not die in order to get the gem, in crash 1, EVERY level required you to not die if you wanted the gem. For the most part I disagree with the notion that crash 1 aged poorly, but that save system is just inexcusable.
Using time trials' best times to establish which game has longer levels is not a very reliable way imo since Crash 1 is the only one where u cannot use the speed shoes to go faster than normal speed.
Also the playstyle of crash 1 compared to crash 2 and 3 is very different since it's more about waiting and being careful to make ur Jumps at the correct time compared to the other two where things go faster tnx to a more dynamic moveset and a level design studied to be rushable (and this is even more true with crash 3 since the level are crafted with time trials in mind, since those where implemented with that title)
This is what really makes them feel longer in my opinion
(Other than the fact that some are long for real, but this is true for the other two games too)
Plus alongside Speed shoes, Crash 2 & 3 also have slide spin or the “hobslide” exploit, all you can do in Crash 1 is jump & spin
@@themenacingsloth yeah i agree, that's kinda what i meant with "more dynamic moveset"
The entire games after the first one are made to be faster, nothing to do with level length
@@AvocadoKado Exactly, but even if we take level length into account, there’s only like, 3 somewhat long levels in Crash 1, the rest are either medium or short
@@themenacingsloth native fortress, sunset vista, slippery climb, castle machinery come to mind
But also cold hard crash, hanging out, ruination, bee having, piston it away, dino might, gone tomorrow, tomb wader from the games after
You ain’t ready for Crash 4 then. Also in all fairness, the snow levels are just the jungles but iced over, the ruins are, well, the ruins & the sewer is the sewer system of the factory from the 1st game. No UNIQUE stuff ‘til the space levels
So true. Most levels from Crash 1 were recycled into Crash 2.
@@niemand7811that’s because it’s takes place in same islands as Crash 1.
Ummm, I object to the level themes count, especially on Crash 2 and 3.
Crash 2 has 7:
- Jungle
- Snow
- River
- Sewer
- Ruins
- Alpine (this includes Bee levels and Chase levels)
- Space
Crash 3 has 10:
- Medieval
- Underwater
- Orient
- Prehistoric
- Beach
- Middle East (I'm kind of surprised you merged Middle East and Egypt together, when they are totally different)
- Egypt
- Road
- Future
- Plane
TIL too difficult is slang for bad game design
I think the first is tough when you are younger, but as an adult, it didn't give me too much of a problem. I died a couple of times on the last level, but never to the point of wanting to stop.
Crash Bandicoot 4 they ruined it. Why, well levels felt like a long drag, plus being difficult getting every box in the level. While dying minimal times, Prefer the Trilogy to be honest, im not gonna lose my insanity on Crash Bandicoot 4 dont want to play it even if im halfway through the game.
I call Crash 4 "Fake Crash". It's not the Crash Bandicoot I grew up with. I prefer the Trilogy, Team Racing, Nitro Kart, Wrath of Cortex and Twinsanity. I gave up on getting the platinum relics on Fake Crash yesterday. Too many boxes and levels are way too long. I hope Vicarious Visions remaster Wrath of Cortex and Twinsanity 😊
There's a difference between hard and stupid but people who meat ride this series refuse to admit it.
If you guys have issues with the N Sane Trilogy, wait till you try and complete Crash 4.
I actually didn’t find Crash 4 to be that hard lol
I recently in 2022 finally beat Sunset Vista or whatever the name of that stage was for the Platinum Ankh in the Time trial, now I can move on to the next stage... still only have 17 hours into the game, but that level drained me.
8:46 Fuck Crash 4! The levels, characters, music, etc. are fine; completing the game 106% on the other hand is a fucking nightmare. I’d rather compete DK64 and Mario Sunshine instead, because, at least, those two are fair to 100%.
Don't blame you for not liking Crash Bandicoot 4, I think they ruined it myself, levels were a bit long felt like a drag which never ends plus it's difficult getting every box in some hard parts of the level without dying more than 3 times, yeah I'm gonna play the trilogy instead, save my insanity over the fourth game.
I dont think the time runs are fair of Crash 1 vs 2 and 3, since in those games you are giving the running shoes, something you dont get in Crash 1 looking back at this.
This breakdown is amazing dude.
Thank you!
What made this game so hard was the terrible save system.
Based on the premise that they're a war veteran with PTSD that's trying to adjust to civilian life, does it make sense it's maybe "too difficult"?
Crash 1 is WAY harder than 2 and 3. The difficulty spike hits at Native Fortress and then escalates dramatically on the second island. In addition, the set save points and the "perfect run" requirement for gems make it much harder to progress. I came to gaming relatively late (I was gifted a PS1 in 1997 also, age 8, with Crash Bandicoot being one of the first games I ever played) so I didn't experience the 16 bit era, which to many was the last time games were "hard". Crash 1 definitely feels like a 16 bit (or before) game because frustration is totally build into the experience. A mistake is costly! Only as an adult was I able to complete the game (without using the super password) and I STILL couldn't get all the gems - Slippery Climb, I'm looking at you! By comparison, Crash 2 (which I got shortly after 1) was the very first game I completed (not 100 percent)! I think that is why Crash 2 is my favorite haha.
Completely agree!
Road to nowhere still gives me nightmares
I hate crash bandicoot
In my opinion the ps1 trilogy have a good dificulty except the cb1 (I think the mechanic that you lose the boxes you broke when you die sucks although I think it should have only applied to colored gems at least on ps1 because I haven't played the remake)
But i lile this trilogy (in special cb2 and cb3 but cb3 is a bit overrated but remains a good game) ^^
Lack of level variety? I hope one day they say this about Mario 64 too.
they won't though because sm64 was nicely varied
Some things to keep in mind; the original crash 1 made you break all boxes without dying to get a gem, which is a bigger hurdle compared to 2/3.
All the more difficult parts of 2/3 came from the optional challenges and areas, whereas crash 1 is usually the stages themselves.
Stages in crash 1 are inconsistent in their level length or pacing. Some levels go from being under 2 minutes to over 4, which can be pretty draining.
Finally, crash 1 is linear. Stuck on the sunset villa or slippery climb or the road to nowhere? Too bad, either you go through it or don’t get to play more. In crash 2/3 the hub gives you more access to different stages, so even if they were difficult for you, mentally, you know you can always leave and try a different level.
Deaths/times can be a bit iffy to judge a game by. All of these are roughly the same physics and type of gameplay, so you’re always going to be “worst” at the first one you play cause you aren’t as experienced. I think a more accurate, though extremely lengthy, exercise would be to take a standard stage from each game and then go through each individual challenge, identifying the elements involved, how many actions you need to take to reach the next “safe” spot, and the window of timing you have to pass it. Crash 1 has a lot of jumps that require you to jump as high as possible or have pretty tight timings. Meanwhile crash 3 you got a lot more options for getting around, and the stuff in them don’t ask you to be so tight with them.
Good breakdown. I'm working my way through the original Crash 1 on PS1 and it's also pretty brutal. I find og Crash 1 harder than IAT. At least in IAT, you can ignore the N.Sanely Perfect Relic if you're not going for 106%. The original Crash 1 requires you to not die in order to get a level's gem.
I have played both before. I believe in the og Crash 1 if you get gems it saves your game or if you enter a bonus level it does the same thing but you can’t save any other way. The controls are very annoying too as it’s hard to judge where you’re going to land especially with the bridge levels for example. So to get from start to finish with both IAT and og Crash 1 I’d agree it’s harder with Crash 1 however to get full completion in each it’s far harder in IAT. I wish you luck with og Crash 1. It shouldn’t be too bad if you’ve completed NST or even IAT before.
You missed a few bonus stages from cb3
Crash 1 wasn't any more challenging than some of the arcade or snes games at the time. Crash 1 is the only game out of the trilogy that really respects my skills and intelligence as a player because of its challenge (personally speaking). It's just that the newer generation is used to games holding their hands, autosaves and checkpoints every 5 seconds, and short fast levels. If you are this kind, Crash 1 isn't for you.
weird cope, but okay

Maaan i love these games!
And you only played the remastered version of Crash 1. The original game had you doing ALL levels flawlessly IF you wanted all gems.
i'd count egypt and persia as different themes, these levels aren't really comparable
Like I said it’s subjective! Appreciate the feedback :)
Do spyro next!
Lol dude can't play a real videogame
Please teach me!
Crash sucks... 3D platforming done WRONG!! I was 13 in 1997.... we already had Super Mario 64. These guys couldn't compete. Oh 2.5D... Why did they have levels where you were running at a fixed camera? Super Mario 64 came to North America 20 days later. I feel bad for kids who got suckered into this mess. Hey... sorry. Love the video. Hate the game. Had to troll Sir. I gave it a thumbs up. See ya Dude!
Super Mario 64? Having played & Hundo’d that game, I feel more bad for Y’ALL 😬, playin’ that game’s like drinkin ’ old milk, nothin’ but disgust
SM64 is a part of my childhood. I know I trolled first Sir. Good form. I agree SM64 is dated. 3D World is WAY better. Take care @The Menacing Sloth

People hate Crash????
I’m not saying people hate the entire game, just highlighting things people hate about it
