  • The UK car market is increasingly splitting into two distinct camps of value and premium, which leaves established carmakers like Ford lingering in an ever-diminishing middle ground. As a result, the blue oval is responding, moving its image upmarket with the release of ‘Vignale’, a badge of distinction that will give the premium touch to a select number of Ford models. In this video, Jon Quirk sees if it can elevate the status of the Mondeo Estate.

    Thing is, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 are so inescapably common now, choosing this car actually sets you apart from the crowd. It may just be a glorified Mondeo, but then what is the Audi A4?

      +soundseeker63 Do they not sell Lincoln badged Fords in Europe? Even if they don't already, it might make more sense for them to go that route. I'm sure there's already some brand recognition over there for Lincoln, and they can match whatever sheet metal that they've got over here in the States. It seems silly that they'd try to pawn off a luxury "brand" that still has a Ford badge on it. It seems that now that Mulally is gone, the company's going back to its divergence of product lines across the pond.

      Most people in Europe have never heard of Lincoln so it would effectively be a new brand to the market which is more risky than using an established brand. Ford has never been seen as "premium" but since the 90s they have gained a reputation for good drivers cars so its a cheaper and less risky option. I rather like the look of this Vignale but I probably wouldn't buy one (new) because Fords depreciate quickly compared to BMW/Audi/Mercedes. Unless Ford can find a way to manage this I can't see it being a big seller....but then as I said rarity is part of the appeal. Even the regular Mondeo is no so common next to the German competitors.

      Interesting. I'd have at least thought there would be some recognition from American movies and the like. Guess not though.

      I have never been a fan of modern Ford but the new Mustang and Vignale range are spectacular value for money.
      The V8 Mustang sounds amazing and can be had for £36000 were as an M5 or M6 will cost twice this at least.

      That's always been the appeal of Ford sporty cars here in the States. You get performance comparing to much more sought after cars but usually a fraction of the price. The big drawback being that you'll see a million other people driving the exact same car, it looks cheap and it feels cheap.
      I was always a fan of the very old Fords back when they were all rear drive and before smog regulations choked their power plants. From about the mid-70's on they didn't make a single car I liked until the 2011+ Mustang (other than some of the limited production cars like the GT40 remake and the Cobra/Shelby Mustangs, but those were all priced like the premium cars, so still not really interested), so I can understand why you aren't a fan of the modern Fords.
      They've been winning me back since then though. You've got the newest gen Mustangs now, Focus ST or RS, Fiesta ST, hell even the Fusion has the new Sport model which checks a lot of the right boxes. Feel like they got that old mojo back under Alan Mulally. We'll see if they can maintain that under Fields.

    I really wish Ford would bring this car to the States. For the life of me I cannot understand why Americans think wagons/estates/whatever are worse than syphilis but they'll run over anything in their path to go buy the same damn vehicle if you jack it up two inches and put plastic cladding around the wheel wells to make it look like a truck.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 8 лет назад

      WHy would Americans buy estates when they can have Full sized SUV's. The Euro liberals do not allow full sized SUV's as they have taxed them to the point only the wealth can truly afford them.

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 8 лет назад

      bighands69 Because those SUVs are taller and heavier than the car counterparts they're based off of, which diminishes their driving dynamics and fuel economy. Plus most modern "SUVs" have little more offroad capability than an AWD Mazda Protege.

    I've test driven the new Ford Mondeo and was shockingly disappointed by the overall performance of the vehicle. Things that come to mind are a "noisy" ride, glare in the infotainment system, placement couldn't have been worse for the view, the flywheel which causes all fords to have issues when departing from 0Km/hr because of the double flywheel. Simple solution, replace it by a single flywheel and all problems are solved, but Ford won't listen and the overall quality and feel of the car are a letdown. To me this car isn't even competition for VW passat... It looks alright but doesn't feel right! The so called powerful engine was a letdown to me as well. I've driven the 2.0 litre 150 Bhp strong diesel engine and i felt that it came up short. My older A4 B8 felt more fluid having only 136Bhp. I can't really say the the overall comfort was satisfactory with this one.

      GoPro Dashcam first off you haven't driven a new Mondeo as one thing every person that has reviewed it has said the ride is silent and the 240bhp is more then enough power. also I don't know why you are comparing your A4 to a Mondeo as the A4 is a much smaller car meaning less weight. I've owned a couple of Mondeos and never had an issue with dual mass flywheel till well over 100k and they aren't that expensive to have done not compared to a Passat.

    Seriously!? Even after the credit crunch, the Brits are still "getting into pricier vehicles"? Do they EVER learn!?

      no because the effects of the extraordinary monetary policy have delayed our appointment with reality.
      sadly we could have sorted things out during the delay with a bit of pain but chose to buy nice cars instead.
      not long now though..

      Most of the buyers of these cars can probably afford them on credit. If the lose their jobs then car debts are the least of their worries.

      We don't have the Mondeo in the US, so I was trying to relate it to something familiar. I like this car, though. Especially the 2.0L turbodiesel.
