For jay, the octopus actually represents active nature and his intelligence.
Zane is apparently a wolf representing his cleverness and loyalty

It should also be noted that there are several eastern myths of snakes transforming into dragons, usually after some test of growth. Makes a lot of sense for the character who changed the most from his original appearance.
Lloyd moved from helping Snakes to helping the dragons.

I’m glad somebody commented this because if not I would have. It really showed Lloyd starting out as a mere snake as the green ninja and becoming a fully grown dragon as the golden master.

Kai- represents courage and strength and upcoming difficulties
Jay- Symbolizes intelligence adaptability and mystery
Zane- Symbolizes loyalty family and protection
Cole- Is a mighty spirit guide. Represent strength intelligence and gentleness
Lloyd- primordial Power it is a reminder of strength challenge in Majesty
Nya-Represents a magic and gentle soul. It is also a symbol of rebirth

For lloyd, remember that eastern dragons are depicted as almost like flying serpents. So you could think of it as a symbolizing a initially evil snake growing up into a wise and good serpent-like dragon. This is basically lloyd's whole arc

For Jay's the connection could be the mythical Kraken, a squid-like creature known to arrive with storms

i like that, i kept trying to convince myself that was a jellyfish. but kraken makes way more sense, he used wind in the tournament of elements so i think he was low key supposed to be master of storms. (also maybe why they didnt include water in the original lineup?)

Maybe it symbolises their personality. Kai's fierceness, nya changing herself a lot, Cole's strength etc.

Finally someone talks about the elemental animal logos, imagine if they came to life into real or spirit like creatures meeting their ninja selves.

I like how the symbols incorporate the powers as well. The lion man is made of fire, the octopus’s tentacles are lightning, the cats fur is shards of ice, etc
According to the Ninjago Wiki, the ninjas' animal symbols correspond to their characteristics:
1. Kai's symbol is a lion, which resembles his aggression
2. Jay's symbol is an octopus, which resembles his active nature
3. Cole's symbol is a gorilla, which resembles his strength
4. Zane's symbol is a tiger or a wolf, which resembles his intelligence
5. Lloyd's symbol is a dragon, which resembles his power and ancestry
6. Nya's symbol is a phoenix, which resembles her determination

this could be just me overthinking - but the fact that Jay has an Octopus while Nya has a Phoenix, i feel like it makes them even more of a pair because their animals would make more sense switched up. i find it cute lol

Phoenixes die when their flame runs out and they are reborn from the ashes. I think Nya's symbol is a phoenix to represent her identity constantly changing. From Kai's sister, to Jay's girlfriend, to Samurai X, to the Water Ninja and Now, the living incarnation of the Endless Sea. Of all 6 Ninja, no one has changed more than Nya.
Jay’s octopus symbol probably represents his intelligence and how he was the mechanic smart guy back in 2012

I thought the symbol was more obvious during one of the Wu’s Teas shorts when the Ninja were messing around with the special teas and Jay ended up transforming into an octopus 🤣

I always thought Coles symbol was a bear, and Zane’s a wolf. I also noticed that Morro master of wind also had the dragon symbol Lloyd has.

The octopus i think makes more sense when you think about it in relation to Jays character. Octopi in real life are incredibly intelligent and crafty.
The snake for Lloyd could be originally because of how Lloyd was the one to release the serpentine, which ultimately led to him defeating the Overlord. Self fulfilling prophecy that started with the serpentine, snake going in a circle. Makes sense
Could also be because of how Garmadon was bitten by the Great Devourer, a snake
did you know: in many mythologies the word for "snake" was the same for "dragon". many dragons in mythologies were described as "large snakes". so it makes sense that it was a snake and a dragon because technically, it didn't change.
I assume that it was at first a snake because the concept of the green ninja was introduced in the "rise of the snakes" season and maybe they thought that if it was something different it would spoil the fact of who was the green ninja.
but when he became the golden ninja, he got a different suit and that made it easier for the creator/writers to give him his actual animal. the dragon.
Maybe Jay's animal isn't supposed to associated with maybe it's like nyas and is supposed to connected to another person .

Imo, when Nya became the water ninja her symbol looked more like a swan. I think that's what it's supposed to be
Jay might have the idea of a kraken, in fiction you would always see the large creature grabbing a boat in stormy weathers so that could be the reason why Jay has the kraken
Also I thought the emblems were to represent dragons for some reason lol
I think their animals relate to their true potentials
Kai: A Lion always protects its young
Jay: Protects Nya (hence the aquatic creature)
Cole: A Gorilla is Loyal to their family
Zane: Sabertooths always protect their pack
Lloyd: A Dragon is a great protector
Nya: A Phoenix never dies (possibly meaning never quits or something idk)

I was always confused why both Zane and Kai had lions. Turned out Zane has a sabre-tooth.
I love how instead of putting actual pictures of the actual animals tanner uses pokemon lol
I like to think that Nya has the phoenix as her symbol because she will always get back up, even when she is dragged to the Underworld or told she has an Elemental Power, she gets back up, and goes with the flow(Pun not intended), like a phoenix would.
Maybe Jay's in an Octopus just so they can have the tentacles be lightning bolts?
Maybe a Jellyfish would have been better, but they don't have eyes and the other ninja's symbols have eyes

The animals reflect the ninjas personality, kai's lion emblem is his leadership skills, Zane's emblem is reflected as him "bearing his teeth" when any of his friends get in trouble, and that he is fierce in battle.

BTW I think its a storm cloud I also thought jay had the octopus but it looks like a storm cloud too so that's why probably they made it like the octopus and like lightning under it but I don't think it represents his animal
We might find out in season 16 because it's most likely gonna be a jay season or before jay it might be kai but most likely jay

According to Google, the octopus represents mystery, flexibility, fluidity, intelligence, adaptability, and unpredictability. So… Jay’s an octopus, I guess.
The emblem in the earlier seasons kind of reminds me of Char Gar Gothakon from Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated. In the episode, the monster was believed to be up and running my a bunch of skeptics, and I think that if anyone would be a skeptic out of the Ninja, it’d be Jay.
I feel like Nya is more of a Swan
Loving, compassionate and elegant and she transformed from a Damsel in distress to a ninja like how the ugly duckling became a beautiful Swan. It shows her journey as a character and makes sense in why she would have it

I dont believe jay's is an octopus, but actually a kraken. Krakens are often associated with storms at sea, and of course storms have lightning. And it also refferences the relationship with Nya.

My theory for the animal symbols is that their symbol might be hinting to a finale where they all transform into their own animal forms, kind of like Akita in season 11
Bruh like ever since like the movie the ninja changed their symbols and man it made me nostalgic for in season three cole and jay’s symbols shot into the air like the Batman logo
Maybe Jay's octopus foreshadows Nya's future. Nya becomes the Water Ninja in S5, and S6 Jay and Nya worked together and made a Lightning/Water Dragon. And a octopus is a water creature.

Maybe Jay got the Octopus because of how electricity tends to branch off into separate tendrils, which could be reminiscent of tentacles.
The Phoenix also represents rebirth. I wonder if that means anything for the next season ;>

Kai - referencing how he acts like the leo zodiac sign
Jay - it could reference how he's really a big multitasker and how he's kinda a simp for nya
Cole - it could reference how he's between calm and cranky, not just his strength
Zane - maybe it could reference how he is the most mysterious of the group
Lloyd - the snake could reference how he's good at trying to use his head, meanwhile the dragon could reference how he overcomes the darkness
Nya - it could be a Phoenix, and like we know in mythology, they're known to come back from the dead, referencing that one cole scene in season 5 aka peek a boo
There are also a lot of eastern myths of snakes becoming dragons.

Well, this is rather odd seeing as someone's zodiac sign does not and could not represent one's personality. That's impossible to tell from constellations. I would've said something like
"Kai acts like a specific variation of the stereotype for the Leo zodiac sign" but maybe I'm looking into this too far.
jay’s symbol is actually a squid not an octopus
Ok, correct me if I am wrong, but I think Zane's symbol is more of a Lynx.
Lynx's are solitary creatures (free souls, like Zane), and are also associated with cold, ice and snow. They also have very good hearing and sight, perhaps referencing Zanes robotic nature. It also would make sense as the other animals of the four original ninja are all still living creatures, so I feel it would not make sense for Zanes to be extinct. Jay being an octopus likely references his intelligence and ingenuity.

Nya as a pheonix makes sense since pheonix in mythologys are known for being reborn after death, so Nya got kinda reborn from samurai x to the water ninja

I would love them to come back even more prominently on their suits. Maybe a chima/ninjago crossover for a season?
I was thinking the same thing like the lion's and Kai and the gorillaz and Cole and the Phoenix's and nya and the sabertooth Tigers and zane although there is no octopi or dragons in Chima
Always seen Jay's symbol as a stormy cloud and never could change that.
Aside it, to me Cole's symbol was an earth-made creature, even that actually it was to be a gorilla (which yes, makes sense with him), let's be honest, the first one symbol doesn't look like a gorilla lol
Cole is like the Silverback of the Ninja Troop. They protect their family, which I think fits Cole.
You know how Noble Houses have animal Sigils? It's kinda like that, but for ninja

A weird idea I had was what if these animals were the first elemental masters before humans. I know it doesn’t totally work with ninjago’s lore but that’s just what I think

There is an anime series "gormiti" or something like that and it also has a lion as the fire elemental and a gorilla as earth elemental.
I never paid much attention to these symbols but they are pretty cool

Lloyd having a snake at first is thematic to how his character grew and his hidden potential. In most mythology, snakes are descendants of dragons and can evolve into dragons. Mia’s Phoenix is the same. She is the character he has changed the most in the series. A bystander at first to an assistant, to a vigilante, to a ninja and so on

Jay maybe is an octopus for the reason that ironically octopuses are known for having from 3 to 9 hearts even, and we know that Jay is one of the most emotional and sentimental characters in the series, but it is just a very rhetorical assumption, on the other hand, Not to mention, octopuses are boneless and they settle anywhere, and we can see that Jay is really versatile and can see good from bad and adapt to situations that others couldn't with his humor and positivity.

Cole's was the one I never really figured out, even during skybound, it looked like a Puma/Jaguar there, thought the first one was a skull of sorts, later settling on a Hippo Skull.....hm a Gorilla skull works too I guess, personality and element wise is iffy for both.

Jay is animal symbol is an octopus, because octopus represent the storm. An octopus can also be related to a mythology creature, known as the kraken. A monster that comes during a storm in the sea. Also what conducts, electricity, water, and what travels into water and releases a chemical that can create chaos an octopus.
I think the octopus matches jay because the octopus has tentacles, and especially in s1 you can see that Jay's lighting also has three tips just like his suit and lighting is also kinda tentaclelliy, but nya tbh at first actually thought it was water cuz for mr it kinda looks like a wave
