I have just sat down with my boys to watch this interview and we had a very insightful discussion about Emmett Till and how our nation still has so much work to do to make life better and safer for all of our fellow human beings. Thank you!!
Sadly, there were so many more Emmit Tills that didn’t make the news, because they knew the same would happen to them. Even the little girls they blew up at church, nothing was done about them. The “Soil of the South” has so many dead bodies that were buried at night, because they could accuse Blacks of any offense, and it resulted in a severe beating or death. Countless murders that nobody answered for, because Blacks knew to keep quiet!😢🙏🏽
I personally thought that Emmit Till coming to the south was not smart . That was the worst choice that anyone could really think that a Black child was not safe . The mother let her cousin talk her into letting Emmit to the south. Bad bad move just my opinion
@@audreymcdougle4193 I think hindsight is 20/20. There was a large enough family to watch Emmett and protect him. It wasn't Emmett's fault that he did something that is definitely prohibited in the South. We make errors with other people, but it's usually forgiven or was misunderstood. This was a different time and there is not an atom of me that will ever know the feelings of the families and Emmett. Our world today is very different. Horrifying racism and prejudice happens every day now. A lot of people were brainwashed to believe black people were less than, non-human, a disease to avoid, a disposable life. Safety concerns were active in the North as well as the South. Have you ever gone to a new, scary, or dangerous place, but had someone with you who was local and understood the surroundings. You'd feel much safer. His mom probably thought that he would safe in the arms of his extended family. That wasn't the problem. It was a simple cultural mistake. When we visit other places, foreign or domestic, we never really know the customs or repercussions of our actions. Emmett did something harmless, but in the wrong place at the wrong time. He never even knew. Carolyn's lies were not unusual of the times. It didn't make it right.
Since the first time I learned of this horrific and sickening act I have been horrified that anyone could justify such treatment of a human being let alone a young child. It still brings tears to my eyes. Such inhumanity exists to this day in all parts of the world and in the USA.
@spider man You are making excuses for something that can't be excused! We do NOT have to become a product of our society, that's a real copout! People rise above their circumstances all of the time!! What about the kid who grew up in a household where both parents abused drugs? He decides that he doesn't want to be like them, so he stays away from drugs, works hard in school and goes on to become a Harvard graduate!! His "society" was drug abuse, but he didn't make the excuse, my parents do drugs so I will too! He rose above that!! So I say for the LAST TIME, racism is a CHOICE!
When you are a child and you find yourself in a frightening situation, your only hope is for an adult... mother, father, uncle, to come rescue you. I feel blessed that my high school history teacher had us learn about this in depth. Incredibly, the exact narrative as Rev.s was taught to me back in 2014. Emmets story should be part of every US history curriculum.
I definitely said this is something I should’ve learned in school. But okay so what im not understanding is even if it was after trial that the accused confessed to their crimes .. why wasn’t anything done atp? Like why is it still excuses as to why justice can’t be served
I agree, I asked my sons if they knew of Emmitt Till and was surprised they had not. 😢 The movie "Till" really captures what happened and I had my 12 year old watch it with me.
Thank you Rev. Wheeler Parker, Jr. for your account of the lynching. I met Emmett when I was nine, two weeks before he was heading to spend the summer down south. He was 14, with the most beautiful eyes, I was smitten! This burden I've also carried, so happy to know, finally Emmett's story is known!!!!
Rasheem Carter... decapitated in Mississippi last November. 3 trucks all W men chasing him. He called his mom before he came up missing and said" if anything happens to me the owner of the company did it."Rip all the Emmitts in the world.
I remember this case too! I believe his family went down there and the locals were disrespectful and talking shit. I think this is the one I saw. I'm going to look it up.
When I watched the adaptation of Emett Till...I was OK until I saw what those white racist people did.....I cried like it was my child...proper wracking sobs. That white woman lying in court about what transpired in the store....total exaggeration.
I believe the story. It is heart-rending that adults would treat a young person so vulnerable that way, then lie to justify their actions. I can't wrap my head around the cruelty and hate. It is the same hate that is active today in politics and that divides our country. I am ashamed, we should have learned by now.
When you dehumanise people, you are justice and incentivise to do all the evil things to them without remorse. Fox News is creating the same atmosphere at the moment.

Emmett was just being a child. And Emmett was being a free human . And those evil people had no right to murder that child, the way they did. But I promise you this ,they are going to have to stand before Jesus every last one of them will pay 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾.
I first learned the case of Emmett Till when watching the PBS series Eyes on the Prize. It was jolting to my senses then and has been equally jolting each time I've listened to it or read about it all during the ensuing decades. I am a 78 year old white man - the state of Mississippi will always remain anathema to me.
We traveled to the south from NY. However, by that time my grandfather and great grandmother owned their own land so we didn't have to go to town. We had fruit trees, pecan trees, watermelon fields, and so on. Thank God
@@jessiefrye3045 we weren't there was a swamp off of my grandfather's land white hunter would have to drive by my grandparents home to get to it. When coming through they'd stop and speak to my grandparents they call them Mister and Miss. They never called him boy or the n-word in pur presence. My grandfather never jumped for them either. He went from sharecropping to ownership.
I absolutely believe every word this sweet man said about Emmett, what happened at the store, and all that transpired after. The folks responsible for Emmett's death, including the woman at the store, should have all died the same way poor Emmett did. What they did to him was unconscionable.
The woman, Carolyn Bryant, is still alive. A few years ago she admitted that she lied about Emmet being aggressive towards her inside of the store. As this man is saying, he whistled. In the meantime, the two men who took him were originally only planning to "rough him up" not kill him because they knew he was a northern boy and they respected his grandfather. However, when they got him to the scene, they noticed that the boy was "arrogant", wouldn't back down, didn't act what they referred to as "n*gger scared" (i.e. crying , begging, pleading, etc...)" and he wouldn't admit to doing anything wrong. He also wouldn't say "yes sir" to them and when they asked him if he thought he was equal to white folks, he said "yes". They tried to beat and torture that out of him and still he kept saying "yes" to the question. It infuriated them. Eventually, they put a gun to his head and he still wouldn't comply. They shot him in the back of the head and then had the three Black men who witnessed the entire ordeal discard the body. Carolyn Bryant was originally in the truck when they picked Emmett up. She verified his identity and the rest is history. She had no compassion for the child nor for his mother. Vile.
And what was even worse, as mr. parker recounts here, is that when they were able to profit from their crime, they confessed but still continued to lie about Emmett's character. I can't imagine how it must have hurt the family to hear the way he was so falsely and wrongly portrayed in order to justify what they did. I'm sure there are people who still believe that Emmett was cocky about all the white women he'd had. This is blaming the victim ("it's your fault that I beat you") of the worst kind and a gaslighting that persists to this day.
I asked my grandmother what made her fall in love with her 1st husband. She claims she didn’t love him (after having 6 boys together 🙄), but she NEEDED to get out of Mississippi and he had just joined the army. My great aunt said grandma stopped smiling, when she was younger and still living in Mississippi. I always wondered about that…. My grandmother was a very pretty light skinned woman and we were always told that we had native ancestry. However, when my mom did a DNA test, it said she is 24% white… I don’t even know what that would mean for my grandmother. But my mom is kinda of light, and she did not get that from her father. Who was much darker. I want to know. And do not all at the same time. But later I found out, that everyone knows what the unspoken rules are in the south… My family has had land stolen, we have been rapped, tortured, maimed and killed. We are all so very very tired of this shit. I wish I was given the $5 million offer, that they had in California. I would take that money and get the fuck out of this shit-hole country, so goddamn fast! You would see dust, like roadrunner.🏃🏾♀️💨
I’m lighter than both of my parents and I’m unmistakably, undoubtedly my father’s child. Genetics were taught to us in high school. People come out all kooky kinds of ways irregardless of their racial backgrounds.
What $5 million dollar offer are you referring to? My mom's side of the family is from the backwoods of Mississippi (in 2024 their hometown's town population is less than 400), and most of them moved to Los Angeles, CA. So, I'm curious about you mentioning a $5 million dollar offer. What offer are you referring to?
@@angelae5748 I'm wondering if they are referring to reparations. There has been a lot of talk about reparations and people are for and against it. It was due to the fact that Blacks were bought here against their will and forced to do labor for White men and their families for nothing. So, the argument is we are due money, but supposedly descendants of the slaves who were bought here. But how do you determine that? This statement is from an African American woman whose mother and father were born and raised in Mississippi.
This is why the day of their extrujudgement comes upon mankind.Whereas tm weak, desolate and down trodden can,t recieve justice, the almighty God or Allah will be the judge, jury and exicutioner on those who deprived the whole of humanity from their true liberty and human rights. It is said that during God,s judgement, mankind will not be able to deny what he did during their time of existence. For all the things he committed will be revealed to him or her,(good or bad). And they will not be able to deny their pass , for what will be revealed will be the unadulterated truth concerning their life and time on the planet earth.
The word EVIL doesn't come close to describe what happen to this beautiful young man. Its so disheartening to know that racism really hasn't changed enough in this world. People are still having to deal with injustice, what is it going to take to remind our world that we are all cut from the same cloth? Take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself What can I benefit from hate? What can I do to be that change?
I appreciate your comments but think about it, anyone who can see what they did to Emmet Till because he was black, and they still are ignorant and racist, there is no hope for them. What a relief to finally hear from someone who was there when this tragedy took place! I am so sorry this gentleman and his loved ones had to endure this much pain !💔 My dear brother was a victim of a similar style of being murdered in 1995, and I feel the "pain" of it constantly! I was born in 1956, so I am grateful for your story being written because it's not a secret that we still see this today! I personally am hopeful that the children of today will make things better. They deserve to live in a world filled with "hope and ❤️ love!" Thank you so much to all involved in bringing us this historic lesson! This was much-needed for historical purposes. This book will be enjoyed by many, I am sure!
Thank you for sharing your story. Knowing our history is important. Knowing the truth is important. Yes, the Southern USA still has so much work to do. Not only white and black people ...but whites and everyone else.
I am terribly sorry you had to endure this sir, but thank you for sharing. As a black man who grew up in the south and as a child, saw Emmett's image in Jet, i could hardly sleep or eat for a day or so
"I want the world to see what they did to my boy." When choosing an open casket option, his mother said this. It was later on the cover of JET back then 😢 We saw, Mrs Till. We can't allow people to forget

Trust me God is at work. He's keeping her alive for a reason. Only he knows. He's a Just God. We don't see what she is dealing with. He's dealing with her and so many more. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I became obsessed with this story and begin doing research in 1990. I spoke by phone with one of the Black citizens in Greenville familiar with the story. He was more than accommodating and urged me to "come down" there. It became obvious I might meet some resistance from the mother as she had seemingly shut out most inquiries. I began to realize this was not going to be a cakewalk, aside from having no experience writing such script along with possible monetary considerations I'd have to bear. It seems it took Whoopi Goldberg 15 years to produce the film ans with that in mind, I serious doubt I would have been able to find funding. But then, one never knows. I decided against proceeding, but the story remined with me. Emmett was 6 years older than me and unlike him, I was born and raised in the south. Sadly, that could have happened to any young black kid., even if his actions were misunderstood by the whites. My parents died in the south in 2005 and were buried in a segregated cemetery.
This is so sad and yet they don't know there is a God that they will face , from the beginning of it all and for every person that was done this way #Godhavemercy
This man is not that old. To think that this is what life was like IN HIS LIFETIME. And not even in his early childhood, he was 16. Nearly a man. This was relatively recent. It’s crazy to think about.
Wheeler should have had Emmett back. I don't feel like jw and Roy were the only ones jealous even hateful of Emmett. Imjs. Two Chicago kids but only one in trouble?? Wheeler should have told his grandfather to get Emmett outta there!
Thanks for your story and the truth. I believe every word you said. Please keep it alive, the world needs to know your version of what really happened.
You have to tell your cousin story because it important. You are his words and pain. This was a terrible tragedy lynching and total abuse. Gbless him and his parents.
Imagine the fear instilled in poor Emmett that day, but even worse, the fear in him on the day of his death at the hands of those thugs. They never saw Emmett as the innocent child that he was. In fact, they did not even see him as a human. His corpse was full evidence of that. I thank God that Mamie Till had the courage to show the world the evidence of this horrific event. Neither her nor Emmett ever got justice in their lifetimes, but I pray that his suffering was not in vain and that it has prevented even one death since. Nothing much has changed, but we continue to trust in God and to him be the glory. Thank you, Reverend Wheeler, for giving us a true recollection of the story. Mamie and Emmett continue to sleep peacefully 💔
I believe with all my heart too! The evil runs from the truth but can’t hide. My heart hurts for Emmett Till. Much love and peace to him. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🕊️👑
I hate his life was spent recounting a tragedy that happened in his childhood. This man could have been known for many great things, but this has to be his legacy … 😔
There isn’t a justification in this world to justify what these evil men did to Emmitt Till, as a race we should be ashamed that these men lived out their lives free from conviction, But, I trust in the Lord Jesus & his just Justification. We failed this young boy & his family.
There is absolutely NO WAY I would have remained in the South after I became an adult or gone back 2 visit during those times especially in MS! They’re STILL this day a bunch of backwards, racists ppl in the country. My family would have had to come visit me where I was. Just the other day a story made national news where a young 23 yo melanated man went missing after reporting to the police he was being harassed by 3 white men in pickup trucks! His body was found decapitated in the woods! Mississippi will ALWAYS be burning 🔥 🤬
Thank you for keeping his story alive. If it weren’t for Rev Wheeler, Mamie Till, Dr King, and so many others who risked their lives….many of us would not be free today.
The helplessness is awful. Being a grandparent and being helplessness to help your grandson has to be torturous. At that time period, do you think they would have been found guilty if tried in Chicago? I was 3 at that time in Ohio. How horrible, my heart goes out to the family.
My Father would take us to Alabama from Chicago to see family every year until I was 7yrs old, when my parents divorced. I remember being taught we could go anywhere but never walk on or cross these train tracks. The White people lived there, and we would be harmed. This was in the late 60’s early 70’s.
Mr Crump, I want to thank you for being fearless. My heart goes out to this family. No one should have to endure this pain. It's always been open season on black and brown people, some folk get to enjoy it while eating popcorn now. Miracles and blessings to the family.
This absolutely breaks my heart. I didn't know until the special documentary. I was horrified and shocked that these people had gotten away with murder. Even more shocked that nothing was done to Carolyn Bryant despite the warrant that was "discovered".
I was raised in Mississippi in the late 60's. My Cousin From Chicago was visiting for the summer. We were at this country store and the white owner called her N___a when she picked up some candy to buy. She jumped on him scratched him up and I pulled her off him . We ran out the store as he was going to get his gun. Told my dad to which he helped diffuse the situation. But we had to put her on the train back to Chicago that night! She was was 13 I was 11. She has passed on now but she was not buying it. It could have been a really bad situation if we had not got her out of Mississippi. She was my hero.
My ex boyfriend's stepfather knew far too much about Emmett Till and what happened. When he told me, things not known or made public about the case, I got physically ill. I ran out of their garage and got sick. I was shaking and started crying and couldn't stop. There is far more , things no one would want to know, or hear, about this case.
@jessiefrye3025 what else do we not know about this tragedy. We are in a constant war aganist these soulless people with the calcified pineal gland causes them as a people to not have a conscious no moral compass. LOOK IT UP THAT PART OF THE BRAIN which ALLOWS US TO FEEL EMPATHY EMOTIONS & FEELINGS ETC ETC
@TAY Maybe the stepfather was there! To me a person is seeking attention when making a statement but doesn't elaborate on it. Either way this story will NEVER be forgotten.
Like they broke every bone in his body, cut his ear off, gouged his eyes out, shot a hole through his head, I saw his mom do an interview for PBS, so what is it that we don't know?
Yall hear that people? When it was cotton pickin time, you had to puck cotton, and if you weren't in the fields pucking cotton you wound up in jail. In the 1940's in Mississippi. Thats my Grandparents youth. Two generations from me. And my Grandparents said they used to pick cotton but never did they go into detail, they said it was hard, but they never went into detail because they didn't want us to have anger in our hearts towards certain people. But as granny always said, the truth comes out in the wash. That was institutionalized slavery. This is crazy!
Emmet's family were sharecroppers. Life for a sharecropper was only a step above slavery! My family is from Clarksdale, Mississippi, about a 30-40 minute drive from where Emmett was kidnapped and murdered. My family farmed cotton, but my grandfather owned his 60 acres of land. My mom and aunts and uncles picked cotton, but not like slaves on a plantation like sharecroppers. Owning your own land made a big difference if you were black in Mississippi. Emmet's uncle was more submissive because he was a sharecropper and didn't have much to say. Bryant and Milam would have gotten some rounds pumped in their asses if they had come up on my grandfather's property!! Even back then, a black man had a leg up if he had his own land!!
Never stop telling his story! Every generation needs to know.

Oh wow!! Where did you meet Emmett??
Rasheem Carter... decapitated in Mississippi last November. 3 trucks all W men chasing him. He called his mom before he came up missing and said" if anything happens to me the owner of the company did it."Rip all the Emmitts in the world.

Yes, and all because he was Black. Racist White grown men.
When I watched the adaptation of Emett Till...I was OK until I saw what those white racist people did.....I cried like it was my child...proper wracking sobs. That white woman lying in court about what transpired in the store....total exaggeration.
There is absolutely no justification for what happened to this young boy vengeance is the Lord's 😢💔🙏🏿
I believe the story. It is heart-rending that adults would treat a young person so vulnerable that way, then lie to justify their actions. I can't wrap my head around the cruelty and hate. It is the same hate that is active today in politics and that divides our country. I am ashamed, we should have learned by now.

My soul hurts for you Reverend Parker. I'm sure every time you tells this story, you relive it. The emotional PTSD from constantly reliving that terror, from that level of evil, at such a young age must be draining.

My heart is literally racing while Rev. Parker recounts this story.
I have heard this story countless times, and each time, it breaks my heart. 💔😢
Yes; sadly there were many stories that never got told.
Thank God
You should have NEVER been scared, or worried, about your own well being.
Not. Ever!
Thank you for sharing. I know it had to be difficult to share, but the injustices of the world will not improve without truth. So, thank you.
Thank you for bringing this to us. A powerful message and truth
Yesssssssssssssssss
Thank you for telling your story.
But later I found out, that everyone knows what the unspoken rules are in the south…
My family has had land stolen, we have been rapped, tortured, maimed and killed. We are all so very very tired of this shit. I wish I was given the $5 million offer, that they had in California. I would take that money and get the fuck out of this shit-hole country, so goddamn fast!
You would see dust, like roadrunner.🏃🏾♀️💨
Blacks in California got a $5M offer in reperations?
I'm so sorry for all of this for you and your family. It's horrendous
They pulled himout of his Uncles house. His Uncle never got over it, because he had promised his family that Emmet would be just fine.
What a precious dialogue for mankind. Many thanks.
Pure evil what they did to that young man who had his whole life taken away, yet she got to live her life.
( Human) We need to make sure to educate ourselves as well as our children that this is unacceptable. The energy that it takes to HATE seems so exhausting, all that energy is so much more rewarding to smile or hold a door open for someone. Take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself What can I benefit from hate? What can I do to be that change?
You are right about racism. Now it’s black people hating white people. Why can’t we just love each other for who we are
I appreciate your comments but think about it, anyone who can see what they did to Emmet Till because he was black, and they still are ignorant and racist, there is no hope for them.
