I travel internationally and interact with lot of foreign travelers. There are mainly 2 reasons -
    1. There's a safety concern in some people.
    2. Other Asian countries are doing very well and coming up faster as more affordable and cooler options.

      1. Ignorance
      2. Cheapskates and ignorant.
The foreigners think that India is a poor country and therefore it is a cheap place. They can toss a few coins and have the world at their feet.
There is "NOTHING" as cool as the experiences in India anywhere else. I think the only other country that is remotely as varied as India is the USA in terms of geography.

My north Indian city can easily match Bangkok in terms of heritage and beats it in terms of nature tourism, but in comparison it is filthy, has almost no walkable pavements, horribly noisy and chaotic with blatant violation of traffic rules, and even in hospitals people do not queue. As an Indian, I have noticed some issues faced by the foreigners coming to India.
    1) The biggest issue is that many places are still very dirty, overcrowded, chaotic. Even the Indians can't handle it sometimes, so imagine how difficult it is for foreigners. And as Indians, if you say that you are used to living with garbage and chaos, then that's quite sad. It shows that our people have just accepted these poor standards.
    2) I have noticed the Chapri culture rising in past few years. I was so shocked when I saw foreigners' vlogs in which some local Chapris were following foreigners and harassing them, also asking them to take pictures with them. It's so disgusting and embarrassing.
    3) Various sellers, taxi drivers, auto wallas etc try to overcharge foreigners, thinking that It's easy to scam them.
    4) You know very well about the issue of women's safety. As an Indian female, I would never consider travelling alone in India.

I have been to India many times attending exhibitions in New Delhi Pragati Madan Exhibitions Centre. Also to Bangalore Airshows 2 times. But thank God I don't have to go anymore as I am not in charge of the exhibition now.
1st, this country is dirty almost everywhere. I still remember the first time I was there and I have had very bad food poisoning.
2nd, you just cannot enjoy freely in this country. Everywhere we go there are always beggars following you and many of them are kid beggars as young as 10 years old and look so pitiful.
3rd, touting people following you and pestering you to go shopping with them so he can get commissions and scam you.
4th, take a taxi for foreigners it is common they over charge you many times more than the locals. Or if we pay them they always say they don't have change. And refuse to give the change. So you have to make sure you carry a small denomination rupees to pay for the actual fare.
5th, finding a reasonably clean public toilet is almost impossible. You always have to make sure you do it in the hotel before going out.
6th, the people's civil manners are very uncivilized and uncultured. Don't know how to queue up for anything. Many times I have had the locals just cut into the queue in front of me. Once I was making an order in KFC, a guy just cut in front of me while I was still making my order. I told him I haven't finished making my order and he is not happy and turn violence and wanted to fight with me. Even the KFC staff can't do anything. Later I found out that because the staff is worried as people behave this mostly from the upper castes community so the staff is worried to offend them.
7th, the air is always very pulluted.
8th, traffic is like totally no system at all and very dangerous to cross the roads. And horning is as if they are enjoying nice music. They just keep horning not knowing if it is necessary. I can mention a lot more but these are enough to tell what I have experienced in this country.
This is one country that I will never go to again even if they paid for all my travel expenses.

Adani doesn't own all the airports bhai. The only thing that's cheaper in India is the human capital. So anything that's based on service will be super cheap. Think hair cutting, plumbers, etc. Also a lot of IP based things are cheaper in India, because in these kinds of business selling a new version of software or a movie doesn't come at too much high cost, so that's why Netflix is cheaper in India. Books are launched in India at a much cheaper price. Air travel has most of its cost on Purchasing aircraft and oil. Crew form a small part of the salary. And those two things are the same in Europe and India. Actually oil is more expensive here since we have high taxes. You can checkout most Airline profits and you will find they aren't really insanely profitable.

If you were a member of the middle/upper class before 1991, you will have seen a decline in the quality of life. Of course there has been technological improvement but the complete lack of town planning and sensible regulation means that our cities are much more polluted and much more crowded. Before 1991, a member of the middle class was a relatively rich person in a very poor country with all associated privileges. The unwashed masses are much more in your face today. Compare the average journey in railways second class today with 30 or 40 years ago - much less civility, much more boorish behaviour. The true test of a society is not building beautiful things but maintaining them properly - that requires systems and that requires competent people at all levels, not just an elite that’s able to build something beautiful. Our lack of attention to good primary education and health in the early days has had terrible consequences. Kerala may be an industrial wasteland, but as the average Keralite behaves better than the average Delhite the average tourist will have a better experience there than in Delhi. On top of everything, we have crazy animal lovers who think it is perfectly acceptable for monkeys, dogs, horses, cows, buffaloes to be roaming the roads. The owners of stray cattle face no consequences - such animals would be put down in any sensible country.

With the massive constructions came the change in demographics and the disappearance of the Goan language and culture. Domestic tourism is there because Goa was a good destination for foreign tourist for long time and had infrastructure to support it. India's sales strategy needs to change. There's no point in selling all of India as a destination, because much of India, particularly the larger cities, are way too crowded, dirty and unsafe. India's tourism industry needs to pick a select few places, clean them up, and sell them as specific destinations rather than as part of India, somewhat like Indonesia markets Bali. They should pick places that are a little less populated and have plenty to offer. Some suggestions could be the Andamans, Lakshadweep, North East, Kashmir, Leh, Pondicherry, Simla, etc.

    • @krishanrathi9119

In India, unchecked urban growth, poor regulation enforcement, and local governance issues degrade once peaceful towns. The only solution is strong enforcement of standards, quality, and integrity, but the government has failed to act, greed is too hard to resist.

Well said when you mentioned that the locals' standard of living has gone up. However, the government and even the people don't truly believe in improving standards of living. So, I don't think it's going to change. People need to change their mentality, and they should also be sensitized towards foreigners. For example, people often take pictures with Western tourists, which I don't quite understand. Another example is foreigners being charged 500 while locals pay only 20 or 50, which doesn't make sense. When the government views foreigners as a source of revenue, we can't expect locals to think differently. By reducing ticket prices, sightseeing becomes more affordable. This is just one example. Also I was not allowed to be at place with my friends and had to stand outside and also some other queues as I was indian and there were western so. I dont know what to say

The real estate destruction, exploitation of our land, forest and other resources, inflated real estate prices (outright purchase and rentals), inflated restaurant and hotel prices, expensive local transportation, the party noise, chaos on road or secluded homes, street voilence, misbehaviour against women, drugs and vandalism will go down. I know that this will affect the poor people first but I strongly feel its important. This will eventually help us introspect and also correct a lot of things. Malaysia have a cable car system to go to high lands (mountainous area) which was fantastic. I was thinking how easily such a cable car system can be built in hilly areas (ghats) of Kerala. No one has not even thought about it. If we keep our premises clean it will help foreign tourist arrival and in turn can give job to millions. The people who degrade our environment doesn't realize that indirectly it is affecting their job prospectus, cleanliness and civic responsibility should be emphasized in the school. Great hotels and nice airports, but the horrible transportation is a major hassle and really ruins the experience.

I’ve been visiting India for the past forty (40) years , sadly travelling in India is becoming more and more harder year by year, the pollution is really tough especially in the North , unnecessarily noisy honking especially in alleyways in Varanasi by motorcyclist,Air pollution n dust pollution from construction is more and more every year sadly even places like Rishikesh has become dusty. My last visit to iIndia was November 2023 I actually intended to travel for at least three (3) months sadly just after four (4) weeks I left with a heavy heart . I really hope some major change is done to tackle all form of pollution especially the air quality n noise .

The rise in danger for women in India, is closely connected to current macho, hyper religious & political climate. This type of mentality fuels a violent culture in our society.
It's necessary to recognize this & for leaders in power to help to create a more inclusive & safer society.
By promoting compassion, & respect for everyone, including from different religion & caste, we can dismantle the toxic macho culture that perpetuate violence against any group, including women.

Indian leaders have for at least 15-20 years been fueling thism 'macho, hyper religious & political climate. This type of mentality fuels a violent culture in our society.'
      It's their strategy for Hindutva!

everything said is absolutely spot on
just came back from a 3 week trip of both north india and kerala with wife and kids
completely convinced that nothing will change for the better in my current lifetime
very exhausting trip, terrible crowding and pollution.
I fail to understand why people would spend their hard earned money to visit India.

Basics of cleanliness, treating people with respect , being fair with fares are ignored, it is important how you make our tourists feel and not make it an opportunity to fleece them.

So true! Arrogance and criminal behavior has taken over most our tourist places. Politicians, both in power and otherwide are hardly bothered, but only interested in making more money and becoming richer. Sad, but doomed...

Its good. I suggest foreigners without tour guides be banned entirely from coming to India. Like in Bhutan. This will weed out all the backpacker rabble and also provide lots of jobs.
Most of them are ignorant, uninterested and utterly clueless. They then get into trouble or lost and end up miserable, confused and frustrated.

Our tourism department and government thinks only selling Tajmahal will bring tourists. They neglect good quality infrastructure, cleanliness and hygiene, safety and security etc. Tourism is part of soft power. Do we have any stretegy?

    • @drodro7672
      @drodro7672 День назад +1

They are no longer selling Taj Mahal ! Taj Mahal had been openly boycotted for reminder. Just Agra pathetic conditions show how the international tourism industry in India is a tough thing, and now, even on a domestic scale ! Many heritage buildings (not necessarily protected by ASI) left over, vandalised, massively encroached, destroyed sometimes by government agencies themselves ! No interest in preserving and valorisation of Agra downtown (remains of city walls, havelis and old buildings, bringing controlled amenities without disturbing city's landscape and aesthetic, etc.). The project of a big and interesting museum in the city (for which central government must give some funds for acquisition policy) converted into a hall on the honour of a non-local and historically unrelated king, etc.
India's current tourism policy is only focused on religious tourism, specifically targeting a few communities that aren't found worldwide (so domestic tourism is more awaited).

Also there is a lot of over pricing online. In sam desert there is a hige difference between online and offline prices

Just came back from Goa 2 days back and couldn’t see any major difference compared to what it was last December, when i was there. So I don’t know why are people saying empty beaches. We stayed at arambol and visited morjim and baga. All fully crowded.

I am an NRI living in Europe.
The last time when i was in Goa, I was returning a scooter and was waiting to get back my security deposit.
I had to catch return flight, so i can not waste time, hence, after waiting for 20 minutes, I told, I have travelled to more than 20 countries and the services offered in India are worst. There is no value of time.
The bike owner started shouting on me "How can you tell this..? Why are you telling bad things about India". He was really aggressive.
I told I am just telling the services in India are bad..
The bike owner did not accept his fault and made it Me vs India..
These are just illiterate people, ready to fight everytime. Imagine what they would do to a foreigner.
I am sorry, i must say, Indian society overall lacks empathy, integrity and civic sense and is really agressive and abusive.
For this comment also, there will be some online trolls, waiting to hunt me.

same here, i'm afraid to place any constructive criticism about india or a place in india. I think especially as a NRI we get harassed more. Many indians think it's ok to harass us more and see us as traitors although it's the NRI's that bring a LOOOT of money and business to india.
