  • Originally a jingle recorded for Coca-Cola at the same time as "I'd like to teach the world to sing" by The New Seekers in early 70's . Lyn Paul saw the commercial on TV with this song in 1975( the link of the original commercial : • New Seekers 1970 Coca ... , so she asked Roger Greenaway ("I'd like to teach the world to sing" and "It oughta sell a million" were composed by Bill Backer, Billy Davis, Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway) to write additional lyrics for the song. Lyn Paul's version was released in 1975 as the first single of her one and only solo album "Give me love". The song reached No.37 of the Hit Parade in UK. This is the mono version of this song.

Back in the early 70s I was a member of the Beachcomer night club in Seel Street, Liverpool.
A marvellous ground floor bar, first floor disco, and restaurant area near by. The food was brilliant.
T Rex, Chicory Tip, and the Sweet were often on the Disco
Many Everton and Liverpool players frequented the club on Saturday nights.
Further up the road was another club called the "Odd Spot" on Bold Street, which i also frequented with my long term mates. It was owned by a chap named Vince McCaffrey who married Lyn Paul.
And began life living in the Childwall suburb of Liverpool
The new seekers had been appearing on one of their final shows in Liverpool, and with knowing someone at the club saw them perform at the old Shakespeare .They were a top group who never got any proper reward for their millions of record sales. It was widely reported that they were paid the princely sum of £100 per-week under the management of Keith Potger a former member of the original Seekers pop group, whilst at the peak of their popularity.

@@fisherpeter695 thanks for great info peter - and for the lpool references incl the "Shakey". Didnt lovelace watkins do great shows there and everybody loved him?

@@johntate5722 John, he probably did, though I never saw him live. He often did to old Wooky Hollow. I did see David Alexander, and Malcom Roberts at the Wooky and both raised the roof
The later two were great solo singers who would have had TV profiles in the 90s, and 00s when a lack of talent made Karaoke singers "stars"

    • @johntate5722
      @johntate5722 Год назад

@@fisherpeter695 Haha yes! Tbh i think i might be getting the wooky hollow and shakespeare mixed up where lovelace watkins is concerned. Malcolm Roberts i have heard on record and i think he was great; ive never heard david alexander. Great that you saw these performers in their heyday, incl lyn paul of course. We wont see their like again. As you say karaoke "singers" are now "stars".

    • @fisherpeter695

@@johntate5722 The Wooky Hollow was a night club at the top of Belmont Road in the Anfield area.
The Shakespeare was off London Road near the Lord Warden pub in the city centre.
David Alexander was a Welsh singer who performed across the UK club circuit 60s and 70s
Great voice and stage presence. He was always a regular at a works club ( Docks) called Edinburgh Park in the Fairfield district. Just for the record Malcolm Roberts used to sing his biggest hit, "May I have the last dance with you" He used to sign LP records for his many female admirers !
Just to show the unfairness from those days, and "Karaoke is now King"
One of the comperes from a club I mentioned was a work colleague in the 1970s and in view of the encouragement he got from his guest performers, paid a recording studio in Manchester after dealing with musical copy rights, and recorded a Neil Sedaka song. He trailed it to all the North West local radio stations, only to be refused a slot on the playlists, due to the song not being original.
On that criteria Michael 'Buble, Alfie Boe and Michael Ball would be street buskers.
Two couples from Liverpool opened a bar in Benidorm in the late 70s 80s and named it the Wooky Hollow, which we visited many times around those years

@stingray490 I didn't realise the song originated in 1970. I remember a Coke campaign in 1975 that used the song, which Lyn then recorded as her new single. I'm just so pleased soneone has it and has put it on here! I honestly hadn't heard it since the singles release but have never forgotten it.

Lyn Paul originally shared lead vocals with the late Peter Doyle, for the Coca Cola advert, often shown at the Pictures.
The track was "Sell a Million". It oughta sell a million is a feel good song of its time, and should have been a massive hit. This track would sound great on 70`s compilation cd`s. I have only found it on 20 Blazin` Bullets LP, which made the UK Top 20

I don't even know where to start, but between Lyn and Perter Doyle, I'm absolutely smitten. I write reviews at Amazon.com US under the name Carlisle Wheeling (Magic Hollow) and don't think I gave the Songbook collection the credit it deserves. What happened to cause this fabulous lineup to go seperate ways? They truly had something special!

I'm a new fan of the New Seekers because they weren't a household word in America. Nice single by Lyn. She sounds much better when she sings upbeat and slightly raunchy, similar to "You Won't Find Another Fool." I'm still learning all I can about this group, because I like them better than ABBA . Their music often had a bit more edge to it.

Superb song and sin.ger. Arranged and produced by David Mackay.
Still no CD. I wrote to Cherry Red a few years ago and they were hopeful of a Lyn Paul CD - but STILL nothing. Very disappointing - plenty of New Seekers CDs around.
